**Sniffs** Beautiful, ain\'t it? I can\'t wait til they start getting mass produced. I\'ve stashed away 500 bucks already and hope to put away more soon just for the occasion. 8 TRILLION clocked processes per second...That\'s a lot of FPS. ;)
O\'course it\'s not gonna be x86 compatible, but programming an emulator for it would be no problemo. There\'s also, ah...

That there. So our processing power is multiplying by about 25 whilst our storage capacity is multiplying by eighty, and that\'s not even rewritable. But still.
Actually I can think of a way to get 320 bits onto one micron and keep it rewritable, but it\'d require a really, really small particle accelerator do...
Anyway, comments, amens, hallelujahs?
EDIT: I looked up more info and that article is way wrong. It\'s only about 25-30x as fast as the fastest computer silicon computer chip we\'ve got.

I honestly think that your 500 bucks will by far not suffice. ;)
It\'s going to be sold to the military, which means that it\'s price will be in the millions of $ or even more. However, I also think that this will become affordable within a decade, because of the immense amount of money to be made off consumers.
However, it is a DSP, not a general purpose processor. As the article suggests, it\'s capabilities are in image processing and would therefore be better suited for graphics accelerators, not as main CPU.
For the main CPU, I expect more to come off of quantum computing, as I\'ve recently read an article that stated that digital functions that require several gates of conventional digital processors can be implemented in a single quantum gate which will additionally be smaller and simpler than it\'s digital counterparts. It is my expectation (and wish) that we will see more of this in the future.

It also says that it is concievable that it will become mainstream in TEN years. So I don\'t see the average person being able to purchase it for a while ;) Cool technology though 8)

The cell cpus that are coming out in the near term are pretty interesting too, both Sun and IBM are heading in that direction with their inhouse CPU architecture ( Power and UltraSPARC ), and now AMD and Intel are both doing true multicore as well in the x86 world.
If the product that this Israeli company has is good enough either Intel, AMD or someone else will simply buy the company in its entirety and that will be that. Companies like Intel dont die off, they just wither to the point of irrelevance because of many unprofitable quarters, market share losses, poor management, or all of the above ( ie SCO ).

and that tharizdun is right if it gets to a point where the isreali company could actually compete with them intel or AMD would just buy it...

lol, what are you going to use all that power for?? It would be useful if you\'ve got a gentoo system for compiling I suppose :P I\'m happy with my athlon 64 for now :D

Err what would you do with a DSP ? ever tried one ? my head aches just thinking of it !! And really.. light computation... waiting to see any demo further than pure experimental stuff

hell i\'d like a working cpu above 2ghz.. i got a new cpu, that wasnt compatible with board, got a new board, that was faulty, got a replacement, ram not comatible, go to get new ram, cpu burnt out... got to get new cpu... i hate you!

Lots of good uses for a DSP, they make very powerful encryption engines ( for ssl-based webservers, vpn boxes, password crackers, freenet nodes, and so on ) and media numbercrunchers ( mp3 / mpeg / divx encoding and decoding ).
The Altivec unit used by Motorola in their newer CPUs is a DSP, which is why those Mac systems that use them are pretty badass when performing media computation, like image manipulation in photoshop, video editing and so on. Mind you, it takes up a huge amount of the silicon area on the cpu, and has stopped the clock speed from ramping up as fast as in the x86 world, so there are always compromises..
You would be amazed how smooth a proper OS running on a dual or quad cpu system is, compared to the same OS running on a single cpu. And being able to run compilers, encoders or whatever and take advantage of all of that power is marvellous, it churns through things very fast.
Oh and Xordan, I imagine there are some very bruised egos at Intel now that they have been forced to admit that AMDs 64 bit technology ( x86-64 instruction set ) is superior to their own.. they are including it in the newest Xeons and Pentium 4\'s now, but they call it EMT64 instead.. maybe they should put a big \"AMD Compatible!\" sticker on the cpu and any systems using it. Even Microsoft are dropping support for Itanium in their upcoming version of windows, and HP are abandoning it too even though they helped Intel with the design..

The optical DSP is best for game machines, i.e., it\'ll make polycount issues nonexistant (except: \"it\'s got too few polys!\").
The LASER / quantum CPUs would be ideal for MMORPG servers, because they\'d enable the extremely complex and large computations / algorithms required to create a self-evolving world, plus a sneaky AI (holographic memory would provide the fast and vast storage required). Obviously, they\'d not hurt the gaming experience if used clientside as well. :)
It could run 1000+ instances of PS simultaneously, or maybe one instance of Windows, patching it on the fly. :)

Ok, so atm, what are you going to use all that power for :P I think you could probably run 10 different OS\'s all running 10 games each at the same time while compiling 5 gentoo systems and still run smooth using one of those :D
