I can\'t find another thread about this, and I guess this is the best place for it, so how did you choose the names for your characters?
My characters, Jakob Gantos and Arew Silverwing are both characters in a story I\'m writing.
-
Well, my characters name was fated since before I was born. It is an ancient, traditional name that took me months of soulsearching to find.
One afternoon, when stumped and musing over a MB character creation page I smashed the keyboard with both hands simultaneously.
\"asyghe\" was the resulting combination of letters.
Drop the g, move the y. Invent last name for CB screen.
Ayshe Alchamet

my charictors names (aranis) and (salaris) are both name of my old d&d charictors. aranis a lvl 28 elven rouge ahh i miss the good ole days.
-
Like yours my character name(s) came from my own stories: John Thazer, Talor Sharpblade, Aleandor a\'Ler...
-
Monketh Saiviono
Monketh: I thought \"Hmm, what sounds midieval?\" back in MB and kept typing different names in then clearing them. I settled on \'Monk\' and then glued an \'eth\' on for that midieval effect.
Saiviono: I thought \"Hmm, what sounds cool?\" and \"Hmm, what sounds italian?\" back in MB when I began to RP.

One of them is based on a \'half-dragon\' character of mine from back in the 2nd edition days of D&D (Not the classical half-dragon, mind you. More like slowly turning from human to dragon). He was male, and the word \'drake\', which is usually associated with male ducks, is also often used on draconic beings. Essentially, people were calling him \"Drake-ish\". Eventually, it became \"Drakis\".
Since I didn\'t think Gerard \'Drakis\' Dragonsblood would be a good name for a klyros, I just shoved Drakis as to being his real name, and shoved on a Malaysian word for a last name.
My other character is named after a Romanian exclamation, because gypsies rock.
-
Well, Faldrok was a name thought up by Hevrah, another PlaneShift player and my cousin. He used to write stories, (I don\'t know if he still does) and he just thought up this name and let me use it.
Rotzeach, my last name, means murderer in Hebrew. (At least, if I remember correctly and if I am spelling it right.) I RolePlay Evil...murderer just fits, and I think Rotzeach sounds cool although I am pretty sure that I am pronouncing it wrong since I don\'t speak Hebrew.

Efflixi Aduro= Two words that poped out of a latin translator :P
Efflixi= to obliterate/destroy
Audro= light

I enjoy Scandinavian History and Norse Mythology (I am a history major). So I looked through a list of Old Norse names. I found many that I liked: Goddvein, Aoalbrandr, etc. I eventually decided on Valbrandr.
-
I couldnt think of a name, so i tried just using name backwards, as I had done in another game i had tried, and tried Eman, but that was taken.. though ive not seen him around, and then tried Drake, but of course that was taken, so i did drake backwards Ekard, and name backwards, Eman, Ekard Eman, though i believe when the stonebreakers are fixed i may drop the last name.
-
I\'ve just always been Syrra. If someone already has Syrra I might use Tysira or Tsyra but its all pretty much the same thing.
-
I\'ll not the explain the reason of my frist name (Putadavila) once there\'s no reason for a guy have a name have a name like that. About Ashamn, i dunno, i always enjoyed male names started by A and i liked a lot of the mn sound, so in some way it looks like i\'m continuing the name sound.
Ashammmmnnnnnn :P

mine was chosen years ago. i hunting for a name for irc. so in the vein of those 133+ h@ck0z5 d00d5, i chose steuben. ripped the name from the hammer\'s slammers novels.
as for the last name, vicosa (but, i should check the spelling). i chose it to fit with one of the stories i\'m writing. vicosa is one of the varients of the black locust tree.
oddly enough it seems to have been one of the infrequently used name. just about every where that i\'ve tried it, it seems to have worked. nobody seems to get the reference and think that i\'m using my real name.
-
Well I were just thinking and well just out of the blue I remembered Jazeera... well I thought it sounded cool... but later on I remembered that it was also the name of an Arabian tv station (Al-Jazeera, were once called \"Dane, with Arab name\" on IRC -_-), so I guess thats were I heard the name first lol....
And my last name Hlaaron, well I were playing Morrowind and I worked for Hlaalu house so I just removed \"lu\" and added \"ron\" (in my knowledged \"ron\" were used many times as the end of a last name in some game or something...)
-
Caym is a name I\'ve been using everywhere for years now. I chose it after I came across it everywhere in a kinda strange way for some months, plus it looked a lot like the name of a character I created when I was younger (and I liked a lot the sonority of it). Later I discovered it was the name of some demon (someone also pointed out to me that it was the anagram of \"YMCA\"... -_-), which is pretty lame but well, I was too lazy to bother coming up with a new name.
As for \"Azaghal\", when CB came out I didn\'t know what to choose for a last name so I found a Khuzdul-english dictionnary and picked a word with a pleasant sonority. I thought it was just an adjective but I found out later it was the name of a Tolkien character. I may change it later and try to be a little more original.
-
Moogie is \'Moogle\', but cuter. It just so happened that many years ago, when I first saught after an Internet alias, I was hooked on Final Fantasy games. Thus I was known as Mad Moogle.
About a year later I dropped the \"Mad\" and was just Moogle.
Several years after that, I decided Moogie was more original, and more cute.
My other name, who I used to be known on the forums as Mogura, also has its origins in the word \"Moogle\"- since this, in japanese, derives from the two words for \'mole\' and \'bat\', being \'mogura\' and \'koumori\' respectively.

Hmm, Sirvion actually came out by making a name for survivor. Survion sounded stupid, so Sirvion came out
-
(Hatchnet Dubon)
Hatch\'net is the name of a minor drow character in Salvator\'s \"Homeland\" wich I sometimes use when I can\'t think of a name that has already been taken and Dubon is just a tortured version of Dubroe; Lancalot\'s surname;.
(Japeth Artur)
Japeth just poped into my head when I was trying to come up with a name for an alternate character; knowing me I probably read it somewheres, and Artur is celtic for \"the bear\".
(Faterus Alberto)
Is just a play on the name of my sister\'s cat, Fat Albert, It seemed like a good idea when I was trying to come up with a name for an Enkiduki character.
-
for quite a while my nick was \'martian kyo\'...actually it still is. Anyway since kyo is obviously a japanese name i wanted to find out what martian is in japanese...it was Kaseijin. Well the reason i used the name for planeshift is the jin part it reminds me of djinn which is the general bogeyman in arabic cultures. So i already thought of a little story how the kase part is believed to mean slayer in an ancient dwarven language.... making my name something like demonslayer....or something
despite this little story and logic behind my name i live in fear that a GM will one day just change my name.
-
Phinehas is my general gaming name. When I first started gaming, I flipped through a couple different names, such as Quohog. There was another one, too, but I can\'t remember it. Anyway, since Phinehas already has a slightly mideival sound without being totally limited to that genre, I can use it for any game I play. I originally got it out of the Bible, btw.

Dimaq Emerald
The first name is a bit lame I guess, could be shortened to dq (which looks stylish) but PS insists on proper (argh) capitalization. Anyhow, it is my all-around nickname/account name/etc.
Emerald was a choice based on the fact that I wanted to keep a trace from Molecular Blue days, and wanted to show off my (in-game, ill-gained) riches and the fact that PS/CB didn\'t let me adjust the character colour like MB did and since there was no Klyros back then, I had to settle for a female enkidukai (which is green, thus green crystal, thus emerald).
A tad too logical eh?
-
(Taser Rander)
looking for a good name, then remembered taser from wulfram (the awesome mod :D) and i took that as my first name
people can also say that modern \"Taser\" that cops used, was called that cause if your in a fight with me, its gonna sting ;D
Rander just fit as a last name, nice and medival
(Kalara Sulney)
Klyros, tall fish person... hhey the name sounds aquatic.
when making names for Klyros, think of those awesome tall whites d00ds in star wars 2 :P
-
Not my choice at all, my first day, as I walked across the plaza my name magically changed...never knew who changed it for me, but it caused me to start a new history for my character.
I have to say, I am quite pleased the way she is turning out, and have grown to love her. I did drop the last name though.
-
My name was easy I\'m Scottish so i used the short version Scots normally always use Scots-Warrior but couldnt get warrior in this game so i randomised a name till i found one i thought didnt look too stupid and changed the first name.
-
Heh. I was watchin some stupid cartoon with a villian named magus or somethin. And i was reading a story about Robins for my english class the day before. So there came the great name Robinmagus :D
-
Shannath Lobos has no meanings even if the word \"lobos\" means (i think) \"Wolves\" in Spanish.
When i searched for a new name i started with \"Sh\" and then i liked to keep it with the sound \"Th\", the central \"anna\" is because i searched for something easy to remember.
So Sh-anna-Th...
Lobos it\'s, maybe, because i am latin and i liked something sounded latin on my ears, i realized that the word \"Lobos\" is a spanish one but when i created it i didn\'t think about it.

Icefalcon Alkiden...
Icefalcon came from a book I read a long time ago. I can\'t even remember what book it was, but Icefalcon was a character in it. The book wasn\'t that great...
Alkiden... Well, the \"Al\" part came from the WOT books, and I just added some random letters at the end.
-
Sarrow Rayzek
Sarrow was a resulting in spelling sorrow wrong a long time ago, my friends eventually started to call me by this name aswell. Rayzek became well known for me to say when I am in my stupid mood with my friends, I also used to say it out-loud when one of our home-made dry ice bombs ignited. ;)
-
Xirius Dolaktisht
Well, Xirius is the name I have used since god only knows when, for any character in any game (from Civ III to Avernum, to Master of Orion III to my Warhammer general) Not sure where it came from, but I just like it...=)
Dolaktisht comes from my novel I am writing (I have high hopes to be the next Tolkien) and in one of the languages I created for it... Dol: meaning \"of\" or \"born of\" and Aktisht: meaning \"shadow\"
So literally, Xirius born of shadow
Anyways, great game, just wish I had a faster mac...
Xirius

Essa Desgeega
Hmm. I was not sure about a name, and so I used the random name button. I must have seen something vaguely like Essa, or something that made me think of it. I just like the sound of it.
I couldn\'t think of a last name, and so, I used Desgeega.. which is a creature/monster from the Nintendo Metroid series (at least that is the name used in the NES game). Naughty me. :) So, I talked to a GM.. and thought of different things then finally came to Ceteeja. It has a similar sound to it.. so, she is Essa Ceteeja.

Well I\'m ashamed to admit it but I got my name Adyna from a char name generator when I first started playing the game \'Eternal Lands\' :O But it grew on me and now I can\'t shake it off. But after the wipe I\'m going to have a Surname as well and that has taken a lot of thought with no char name generators involved. So there is hope for me yet :))

I don\'t see anything wrong with using name generators? If I wouldn\'t easily come up with own creations, I would use name generators, too (in fact, sometimes I use them to get some inspiration and feeling for what names should sound like in the particular game / race / gender). I much prefer this option to using names from books or movies or RL things and the like.
Therefore, my names are completely made up by myself, with the availabe information on the setting, the race I\'m going to play, and my personal taste as guidance, in that order. I also never reuse char names: new char, new name.

Aeden Shalcoen
Presented itself in my story from a combination of words I created for a language called Old Speak.
ae=love or beloved
den=soul
shal=secret (shaln=hidden)
coen=waters
\'Beloved soul of secret waters\'
Arnigus Faymor
Well, just made it right up. I needed a new character to run the Sheeples. It was going to be Arnigus \'Fearmore\', but that was a little cheesy. So I rearranged things to sound better.
Jakkar
Just popped into my head, spontaneously creating a new character, who now plays a major roll in my current tale.
*edit* Words sent to Adyna in a PM. The rest of you will just have to read my story to find them. :P
-
mmmm \'Old Speak\' sounds interesting, would you mind divulging more words from this ancient language?

>>and Artur is celtic for \"the bear\".
No its most certainly not. Theres no ?Celtic? language. Its been dead for thousands of years. You might know a branch of the Celtic language but noone knows celtic anymore, they don?t even have a name for the language they used, they only have names for 2 of the branches of it and noone today even knows them! And the languages that came from them are almost all dead/dying as well.
You might as well say arthur is martian for ?cat?

If anyone wants names translated/suggestions in gaeilge (Irish Gaelic) then i?d be willing to help.

Well then little buddies my name\'s history is an exciting and adventurous one... or maybe not! I always had a problem creating names for my game characters... they always were to stupid or corny. But now i was asked to choose a RP adequate name... first i created one based on D&D character that i once had... i played a bit but i didn\'t like the char neither it\'s name... So i decided for an Enki and thus the Char Gen was pressed and voil? Kariloy Markief! I may have not invented the name... but the background story is spinning in my mind and will eventually come out... so FEAR or not! :x

my charictors names (aranis) and (salaris) are both name of my old d&d charictors. aranis a lvl 28 elven rouge ahh i miss the good ole days.
well bob the dwarf couldnt be reborn :( (not very mideival dont you agree?)
so as i sat there stumped(i suck at making names) a remembered a brain child of mine from an old mud game Tarachnul and so in honor of bob the warrior tarachnul was reborn as a dwarf...
regards,
-Tarach

mmm, how did I ever come up with this...name: Quwaar. I was just started the think about RPG online and had need for a name. So I written a few and this one was best. I think it was just immagination.
I use it almost everywhere now :) So whenever you see Quwaar, thats me. Or Qiraash, thats decended from that name... I use it as a backup.
Both are to be shorted into Qr, which is my Pr0-l33t shoot game nick... Tho Im not l33t at all XD But
Fear of the name is bigger then the fear of itself :)
So here you ahve it...Just use your imagination
-
I usually make names up on the spot, no influence whatsoever...
ie. Adeli.
She was a rogue aspiring to become a shadowdancer (Prestige Class) in D&D, so I made up a story about her being adopted by shadowdancers, who were then killed because they hid her. The story never reached the point where it was explained why she was so sought after.
I created \'Tyralus\' out of nowhere, and now use it everywhere (my first WoW character was Tyralus the Night Elf hunter).
I adapted Adeli\'s story to Tyralus, fleshed it out a tad, and related it to PS. I was putting it on the forums, but I had a lot of computer trouble and lost it all.
Shadowdancer is a name he took because he had no other, the \'Shadowdancer\' guild that helped him after his family was killed, was destroyed and he seeks vengeance.
Hence, Tyralus Shadowdancer.

my first ever character was Yaggi, an old nick form school if we could have surnames in MB it owuld have been Yaggi Nagasaki, i\'ll leave that one as it is ^^
Demarthl Reafrah
Dee mar thull (Thull - u Th\'ll) after about an hour playing as Yaggi i noticed the heavy roleplay atmosphere in those good times and thought it just didnt fit so i sat and used imagination, voila.
Kronxek Tufort - a smart Kran ?!? i couldn\'t decide what guild to go to so i made more characters to try out :D
Zayek - the notorius GM of doom 8o, Zayek (Za\'ek once) will return shortly, as Pirakika fades away
Pirakika Skyrim - felt liek a different race for a change, never been a ynwnn, why not... name... hmm... *glance at pictures on the wall* no, cant be Pirokiko, thats Fred Gallagher\'s character... mutilate time! Pira ... kika woo! i win!
Skyrim came form morrowind esIII because i liek that word, think Zayek shall inherit it.
-
you all seem to have chosen very hero-like names...
but...
i think in a midevil world most of the kids are beeing born from poor people, non-aristocratic simple farmer or servant\'s doughters and sons. in my imagination such people don\'t have real lastnames, maybe something like \'smith\' or \'hillfarmer\' would be possible but nothing that sounds like a long history of honor.
my char is the son of a vagabond and a bar-tender, his mother (working in a bar) just called him TRUX because it\'s fast and easy to shout...his mother also cannot remember of having a lastname...
/actually TRUX was the name of the neighbour\'s dog in my childhood...
-
Solanon Azureil is the name of my PS character.
Solanon Ebonheart was the name of one the characters I played back in my AD&D days. I tend to use the name for the first character I roll in any RPG type game I play.
I\'ve been able to reconnect with many gameworld friends by useing the same name over and over in different games.
It makes me feel good when someone sends me a message like: \"Hey I knew a drunken cleric in EQ with that name. Are you the same person?\" :))
-
Sevienthor (forum account name...) its from a story I\'m writing, that they rejected in story writing forum cause it wasn\'t about planeshift (woops, hahahahaha)
-
I wanted a name with elvish sounding and based upon my old counter-strike pseudo lescout (because of camping, duh 8)). I naturally came with Elscouta. The a at the end looks a bit odd though, because it makes me sound female, but it\'s too late to change it :( :P
