Title: New Forum
Post by: joejoe on March 02, 2005, 07:27:26 am
Why don\'t upgrade this board with another free and better board :

http://forums.xmbforum.com/index.php

...you guys should really take a close look at this...it is much better in design and usage....

Joejoe, please make sure when you post something it isn\'t already said (http://planeshift.oodlz.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=13341&boardid=10&styleid=3). We will use use new forum software in the future: phpBB3. The reason that we don\'t use this software now is that it isn\'t released yet.

xmb sucks, well its better than this... but overall there is no reason to change to xmb, if we are going to change to PHPbb3

This was only a suggestion...I\'m quite new to this game/board and ....thought you want to stick on this old & ugly board....

I was wondering... What makes you think that\'s going to happen?

And what\'s wrong with this forum? You can make threads, no? You can reply to threads? Then what\'s the big deal?

Changing forums is a *VERY* big task since we\'d loose all the current threads ( unless there is a conversion script ).  What exactly is wrong with this one?

Well if you follow the link he posted then you will see that JosePhoenix said it...

I think they want something that looks cooler, because they think that this is boring

But really guys, this forum works and as Acraig said all the threads will be lost and we would have to start from the beginning again 8o

JosePhoenix posts in this thread (\'New Default skin\') (http://planeshift.oodlz.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=13341&boardid=10&styleid=3).

EDIT: I\'m sorry, I replied before I had read Jazeeras post.

In case you haven\'t realized it already, josePhoenix doesn\'t really have a say in all this. He\'s making a forum skin in his spare time, but noone ever asked him to. He\'s just doing it because he thinks this forum looks ugly. :)

So I guess I\'ll repeat my question anyway, just to keep things from repeating themselves (err...).

What makes you think that we\'ll be getting a new forum? And as Acraig and I also asked, what\'s wrong with this one?

- The search mechanism is bugged.
- The \'unread post\'-markings don\'t always work the way they should.
- This board IS ugly, no matter which style you use.
- Newer software is usually a better defense against hackers.

Who would mind the loss of all those duplicate topics? Personally I wouldn\'t mind that the threads of this board aren\'t copied to the next. Just keep the stickies.

....and this board ain\'t that easy to handle ...

images, flash files...ranks...etc....all of that....

I like this forum.  I feel comfortable with the layout and usage.  It would be a pity to lose everything... I like going back and reading the history of guilds :).

i dont see a problem with this one, everything works for me, and it\'s simple and easy to use... who cares if its in ugly blues... its not the looks that draw people here, no?

i dont think we do need to change and definitly not to XMB... whatever you do, NO...

so its 2005 and this board is from 2001-2002, that is no reason to go and start sugesting we need to change, there is a lot of old memories to behad here

Nah I think it would be a nice change. JosePhoenix is working on it so just leave it to him :)

There is a new theme that you can try for this board.  Not totally finished but at least has different colours.

I found a lot of things wrong with it. Which have to do with no color scheme. If you want my detailed oppinion abuot it just ask :)

True, at least searching for usernames does not work at all, no matter whether I specify a regular search string or not.

It\'s not \"unread posting\", but \"new topic/replies since last visit\" :). When you stay on the forum for too long, your session on the server will expire and, with the next page that you open, the timestamp of your last login will be newer, showing a lot of threads that have posts you still haven\'t read as \"not new\".

Ooh it looks so much better. It\'s most likely just after seeing the same scheme for almost 2 years, but it just pops out so much more than the white background with blue hue does. Love the new colours, keep working hard dev team :P I\'m really interested in seeing what the new buttons shall look like.

Wow one really has to love this new theme...
it is so much better than the old boring one, this has more depth, and the old was really just way to plain ;)
anyway I am gonna be using this from now on :D

It isn\'t so much the color scheme as it is the use of bold lines, poor use of whitespace, overuse of tables with visible borders (on this page alone, there are lines every half-inch or so)....everything about this version of Burning Board seems fragmented and choppy.  It simply isn\'t aethetically pleasing.

It serves its purpose, but it\'s just lacking in the layout department.
(and I know you\'re going to hate me for this, but even with the new color scheme, the text and background don\'t really contrast enough, making the text hard to read...) /me adjusts the gamma for her other monitor.

Other than the contrast of the bgfont, I like the new color scheme.  But it\'s still the same message board system and nothing short of migrating to new forum software will change that.

I guess I\'m just a phpBB whore...sorry.

It would be sad to see everything go, but the game will be reset at some point as well.  Perhaps it would make for a good trial run?  Just to see how everyone takes it and all.

Changing *this* forums is not going to happen anytime soon.  I would like others to set up their own set of forums though to try out features for any future changes we might make here.

I take that as a challenge ;)

My thinking is: such a talented group of coders and designers have developed this magnificent world full of interesting creatures, yet the forum is so...text-based MUD-ish.

I didn\'t intend to come across as harsh as I did in my initial post, I apologize.

:) Well, we\'ve signed up to work on the game not the forums.  I\'m all about improvement but have to realize that along with changes comes support.  I feel \'comfortable\' with the forum now and how it works.  It should be possible for fully customize the layout of this forum which I would feel better with.

If people have examples of \'better\' forums or layouts I would be interested in taking a look at them.

point well stated.. any forum can be improved.. correction, most of them can, but this one has all the features we need and the devs need to use their time on the game and not the forums.

Well, from web forums I found two that are worth attention:
- IPB which is paid.
- PHPBB which is for free but requires offten updates, heck, all of the web
forums require offten updates.

I am now testing also Fud Forum that comes with eGroupWare which
seems to be pretty neat, but I don\'t think so if you would find a converter
to this one.

Regards.

This forum software doesn\'t seem to have any exploits in it, or at least, nobody bothers to find any. Other more popular forum software needs updating loads because they are so exploitable. This means more work.

This forum has bb posts, moderators and a search function - I can\'t see anything else that you need to communicate. Let the devs spend the couple of days it would take to upgrade the forums working on the game instead - that\'s what I say!
