Why are you so afraid? \"Open Source\" and downloads using \"Bittorrent\" might sound frightning, but its not a virus. Just try it, your pc won\'t explode :)

well when i played the game backwards i did hear all sorts of satanic messages, followed by odd shapes appearing in the static on my monitor, and then my entire computer melted to slag.

the best that is going to happen is that you will burn some net bandwidth and about four hours of play time. the worst... well there is a addict\'s recovery group somewhere around here.

as for problems with the actual play... well there are some. check this fourm for the running dicussion on the bugs. http://planeshift.oodlz.com/wbboard/board.php?boardid=33&sid=8695615fa82a3c3ab31512e40142bb96

well you won\'t get any spy/adware from ps or the site. as for the download... about 360 seconds assuming perfect connection between you and the host. but it will be longer.

hmmm it feels like it should be longer. i may have misplaced a decimal point somewhere.

Yeah, the servers bandwith is limited. So even if your connection is very fast, it will still take up to an hour.

i have had the pleasure of having to dl the game many time\'s due to one thing or another and it allway\'s took 45 min for me .
there is no viruse\'s , spyware or malicious program\'s in it the only problem you will run into is it is very buggy (not virus buggy game play buggy)but if you read the forum\'s you will get a good idea of the bug\'s in the game. so go ahead dl the game see if you can play and have fun like the rest of us  :D

i didnt make this forum to convince me i made this forum to convince my parents so they would let me downlaod it but i still might not be able to.  Parents are so damn stubborn sometimes.

ahh. parents. such wonderful creatures aren\'t they? to have such patience with people such as myself.

you\'ve got to convince them... so have them nail down criteria.

go to them and use these words.

\"i really want to play planeshift. i understand that you have concerns about virus and spywares coming in when i download and play it. how can i work with you to alay these concerns.\"

okay yeah it is boss speak. and you may want to use something other then alay. but, you get the point.

Given that planeshift is open source, you could point your parents in the direction of the source code, which they are welcome to peruse and examine for viruses and malicious code as much as they please.

You can even examine the source code of the Bittorrent client used to download the game if you are worried about it transmitting viruses to your computer, drinking your beer, making prank phonecalls to your house at 1am, or leaving big muddy footprints all over your nice clean carpet!

Planeshift, now 100% parent proof!!

Being a Parent myself i can understand why they might not want you to download it.I have 2 kids and the amount of times i\'ve had to fdisk and reformat their PC\'s is unreal(now i\'ve stopped them downloading unless i see what they want first). But to Your Parents I say let him download Planeshift,it\'s safe and a great game to play.I\'ve downloaded it a few times now it stopped working due to some bugs ingame and I\'ve had no problems when doing so nor have i had any viruses or spyware from it.
P.S. Please dont tell me i\'m the oldest player here(42) I dont care I\'ve ben playing RPG\'s for years i enjoy them:).

As has been said, OpenSource software is, especially in terms of \"knowing what you get\" much preferrable to closed source software.
Additionally, though this won\'t help you much, I\'m pretty paranoid about downloads and the internet, but I have had no doubts about PS, ever.

Of course, I still scanned PS for viruses, and repeat after each update to .exe or .dll files, but I\'m scanning everything that has been on a computer that doesn\'t belong to me.

Needless to say, I haven\'t found anything even remotely suspicious in PS yet (if you trust the opinion of random people on a forum (me, in this case), that is).

IMO, PS is way safer than a Microtheft Windoze update.

Congrats. :)

The d/l times will obviously vary depending on your connection and the server\'s workload / the seeder\'s available upload bandwidth. These things will vary depending on daytime and other factors.

Therefore, the estimated time can vary quite a bit. It\'s a fairly large download, so it\'ll take its time. Since there is a great demand recently, expect the servers to be clogged and thus low download rates meaning high times. Yoiu might simply leave it to download overnight.
