Title: Non linear events
Post by: Rageburst on August 20, 2002, 08:13:17 pm
Most rpgs simply have monsters that simply respawn in some spot after it has been killed. At most, they implement \"quests,\" which is basically kill some other respawning boss monster. It simply becomes a boring game of killing and waiting for respawn... like in Everquest.

While we could have this, there should also be frequent random events to spice things up.

For example, a computer-generated messenger comes to the town at some random time and warns of a massive army of undead approaching them. Those in proximity of the messenger will see the appropriate message in the chat box. Then we actually see a large force approaching... forcing people to group up more than usually.

It\'s almost the same thing, but takes a more interesting approach since players will not expect it. The game can be told to randomly trigger an event at random times... not so frequently of course. Of course, they should always be the regular spawnable monters so the landscape doesn\'t seem empty.

You can also manipulate the weather within an event. For example, it\'s starts to get foggy and rainy when some evil force decides to wreak havoc on a town.

There can also be fun events like a king or princess paying a visit to the town to recruit people for their imperial army or whatnot. This then updates a list of quests and gives you a rank within the imperial army guild or whatever.

Hey yeah that sounds cool, simply random events you know,
You log in and think: hey whats all this fuzz,
The fuzz being: VIP\'s in the town, aargh, and then suddenly a black cloud roams in over the town and covers it in utter darkness,
The screams of several hordes of orcs can be heard from behind the horizon, AARGH!
We must protect the Royals, chaarge!

Hmmm, I guess I took off there.
Anyway the idea sounds cool

We pretend to make things as less boring and repetitive as possible, and this means this kind of quest. there will be many, many kinds of quests, not just \"kill monster X, and he will re-spawn in one hour for u to kill again! =D\"

What about quests where you had to work in a group to do it?
That would be kind of cool, if there was some huuuuge ass monster thing, and before it you had to go through some sort of maze where the different players had to help eachother (like pressing buttons at certain times) to get through, or atleast something like that would be kind of cool.

In Lineage, there is this random event, once a day i think. A group of Death Knights, a firly strong lvl enemie invades a n00b knight town. It was really great watching all the ppl try and take on the Death Knights, only to die. And the knights drop really goo stuff, that a n00b would not be able to get, so the deaths were well worth it.
Just sugesting...

that makes me think of cruel and fun idea. lets all convince andrew gower to unleash five greater demons in lumbridge :D

lol but seriously thatd kinda suck...its unfair to have some insanely powerful creature run into a town and kill all the newbs. though it does sound amusing hehehe

Well, they were not INSANELY powerfull. And as i said, they did have awesome items, well worth to die for. And 10 n00bs around that monster would easily kill it in 1-2 min. PLUS, the Death Knights were not agressive, so it was the choice of the players to fight them.
