Now i\'m not intending this to be an attack of any kind
but one of the things that attracted me to this game was
1. The chance to be in on something like this from the early stages and help the game develop
2. the intended heavy focus on RP within the game
yet all i tend to find is people constantly spawn camping any mob that gives you money, constant OOC talking and any attempts I make to be In character with my questioning and reaction to things generally gets people asking me what i\'m on about.
I never seem to be online at the same time as the roleplayers perhaps you guys could furnish me with what times things generally tend to get rolling (uk time if poss) cause i really really want to get involved but i\'m starting to get pretty disillusioned about it atm.
-
you want Hardcore RP i suggest you either join a guild like the AO or find another game....because PS has not come through on its promise to be a roleplaying game
-
wind walker
it\'s not that planeshift hasn\'t come through on it\'s promise, developers can only do so much,
It needs the players to want to go in that direction too and i know that there is a fair number of people out there and those are the people i\'m trying to make contact with, but having little success.
-
check out Kada\'s tavern... most people there are RPers
arcane-order.com/forums has a full board devoted to RPing
go on irc and you might find a few in teh various planeshift channels
-
which tavern is that one cause the only tavern i can find is the one on the left hand side when you head towards the city gates from the spawn point and it\'s permanently empty.
and the rest of your post makes it sound like the only reliable way to get involved with Rp in planeshift is to Not play the game but go onto guild forums and IRC
can you see the irony in your statement?
How is PS ever going to be primarily a RP based game With so much RP taking place outside of the game - to the point of the being almost no RP inside game at all.
it just seems backward to me
cause then why play PS at all why not just have a Chat or Forum Based Game
-
un... the places i dirrected you to ... their for forum RP and seting up ingame rp... and Kada\'s tavern is a website.... it also happens to be a place ingame.... but the website is where you should head :P
-
and can i point out again - the lack of in game rp and the necessity to have to use a website for the rp.
and people complain about the lack of rp in the game - but is it any suprise when it\'s impossible to RP without the need for external sites
-
Is it possible to roleplay without using the forums or other sources? Yes, it\'s just much easier with help. Personally the only thing I use websites for is contacting people I haven\'t had the chance to meet ingame. If you want to get started in a hurry, and if you can\'t find anyone in-game, then you might as well use other sources.
-
People stopped having a reason to roleplay ever since numbers and points were implemented. So now it\'s all about winning the game by getting the highest numbers, and not about playing for fun, however if you joined PS looking for a roleplaying game, I suggest you leave and come back in 10 years when maybe there is more game to the game. All this is, is a test of the fighting systems and AI systems. Nothing more.
-
I found out about PS a few months ago and persevered through a download with me ol\' dial up modem. I was intrigued by the hint of a world that was to have an RP focus.
I was very impressed by what Atomic Blue has accomplished in only 4 yrs or so of spare time work.
The world seems very inviting and begs for exploration.
The creatures are interesting (well, as much as Gobbles, rats, and rogues can be) and I expect to keep tabs with this project over the years.
The RP element is virtually non existent though, and that is disappointing.
I\'m hoping that upon the full release, the promise of RP police will be enforced. Hell, I say anyone caught speaking OOC in RP channel should be flagged as a lunatic who is \"posessed by evil spirits\" and chastised accordingly (perhaps imposing a fine or something).
Perhaps he could have his Charisma score affected for 1 hour or a host of other undesirable but interesting penalties, to be bestowed by moderators.
I also recall reading some posts a few months ago wherein people were complaining about moderator actions and abuse of power.
Every institution with authority is prone to have abusers of the power. Deal with it, it adds that much more realism to the game.
-
There is more, people just don\'t look hard enough. All the oldies take one look at the Hydlaa Plaza, and leave. Why don\'t you do something about it instead of sit around your forums and say \"Oh, what a shame, Planeshift is just another hack-n-slash,\" and not do anything about it. The players are who shape the game, but unfortunately, the good players refuse to shape it.
I totally agree with you Jhazor. It is pathetic. However, there are a few good roleplayers. You just have to stick around long enough to find them.
-
http://www.pstimes.co.uk/issues.html
This could be the beginning of the rp cure
-
@ Grom> Grrrrr! X( This makes me angry. In one short statement you have reduced PS from an RPG to a Hack-n-slash. You know what makes me the angriest? The Queen is absolutely right. RPing has been relatively abandoned. No one seems to understand anymore when you try to RP.
Why, I ask, did the Devs take this road? We didn\'t need combat. We didn\'t need powerlevers. We didn\'t need to kill hoards of rats. What we needed was to go in a different direction first. RPing does not have to built on strife. Why could we have not started in a world of peace instead of turmoil? Let the realm develop a bit before we destroy it.
Ok, now that I\'ve had my rant, this is what needs to be done to rescue PS from itself. I\'m talking to you Talad.
1. Get rid of the reason for killing mobs and camping to get money. How? Easy. There is a list of jobs in the game. Use it. Pick a job; get a salary. The more you play the game, the more you get paid. No need to actually do anything. At this point, all we need is a source of income. Like the game of \'Life\'.
2. Get rid of powerlevers. How? Limit the amount of \'levels\' you can achieve in a given amount of time. If that limit is pressed, start taking away PP instead of giving it. This is how it works in RL. If you work too hard, you get tired, you burn out, you hurt. I\'m sure the Devs know all about this.
3. Kick the duelers out of town. Need I say more? What kind of outlaw game are we making here? Perhaps even turn off fighting for a while, or limit it severly. We don\'t need to kill each other to RP.
4. What is the point of guilds if they can\'t do anything? Give them guild \'quests\'. Something to do besides declaring war on everything in sight. Create some sort of political \'influence\' system they can effect. Nothing fancy now, to start with. That can come later.
5. Let players run/work in some shops. The NPCs do it. I\'m sure we have a few players out there that can assist the NPCs. Even if they\'re just a stock boy. Let them hand out a few quests.
6. Paper. This would increase PRing by more than you would think. Players could give out missions of their own. Either \'deliver this to so and so\' or \'I have lost my baked rat eye tartar recipe, I?ll pay to find it\' or so many other scenarios. The world runs on information.
There are many other things that can bring RPing back to Planeshift, but it needs to be done before all the roleplayers leave. If that happens, you might as well start handing out swords, because that\'s all you\'ll need. :(
-
Hmmm, I see the anti-thesis of RP has been established. It really is degrading, and fast. There\'s tons of ideas floating around in the Wish List, and other portions of the forums... all we\'re doing is recycling our frustration, and recycling ideas. It\'s not cool... we can write \'til were blue in the face... what good does it do?
There\'s enough of us, someone is bound to be able to help something along. There\'s vacancies galore on the \'Help Us\' page. Apply, instead of griping. It\'s pointless, it serves no purpose. Woooohoooo.
Peace... and happy trails my fellow travellers.
-
I agree, and have always done so. I still don\'t know why fighting was implemented first. I think the focus should have been on jobs. Mining, for example, can\'t even remotely compete with hunting rats for newbies, because they cannot buy the equipment and skill to mine nearly as well as hunting rats works, and also it cannot compete with hunting tefusangs for the advanced players, because there is no way of training mining higher than 10 AFAIK, while sword goes to 70, and also the walks that were long already have been made longer by stamina, whereas the tefusang slayer isn\'t impacted by stamina at all except for two walks that occur much less frequently. And yes, the spawn abuses skyrocket.
I hear that work is being done on the crafting side of things, which might help shift the balance.
Anyway, I am RPing ingame, but naturally I shun the plaza, and indeed the tavern is mostly empty or there is OOC talk as well. Still I have found some other RPers with whom I can RP, and the buddylist and /tell help in coordination.
To find RPers, you must venture out of Hydlaa, and to the places less interesting to powerlevellers.
Also, I think the duelling point counting needs to stop immediately, because that is what caters to the powerleveller! Killing in the plaza should be punished.
However, I totally disagree with this

Realism isn\'t good if it makes chances uneven. If a game was perfectly realistic, it would be just like RL and thus not worth playing. The DR is there for this reason.
Furthermore, GM power abuse that would be OOC and thus not even remotely RP. The only way to \"deal with it\" is to keep very close check on GMs to prevent abuse.
Yes, we are testing an engine, not playing a game, but we\'re also shaping the future community, and therefore we cannot simply ignore the effects the available features have on the playerbase.
There were reports of ingame books being tested, though I haven\'t seen them yet.
Anyway, I prefer to RP in PS, not outside of it. Of course I will train occasionally, but only mildy.

Yeah thats why i post on the forums still.. but dont play any more :/
(why not have a \"craptastic pick\" that harnquist gives away at the start of that quest it doesnt dig very well but you can at least TRY to be a tradesmen.. and fix that dumb mining rule of cant dig 2 times in a row... just put a 5 second timer on how often you can dig) So i can at least pretend im a tradesman mining for a reason ;(
Well i still post so i can still keep in the \"Planeshift Know\" an know when something RP/Tradesmanly is implemented :) also the forum is where all the peple like me wait for something RPesc or tradeskillish to happen XD

Well the sad truth is that although role-playing exists in Planeshift, it\'s just a few shreds of decent activity living a vagabond life. Just like for anything else, there are numerous reasons for this kind of phenomenon.
Probably the most important reason of this comes from the fact that people seem to leave their role-playing expectations in the hands of the developers. \"They make the game, let them make us role-playing environment\", some would probably say. Of course such expectations are for the biggest part simply futile. There are many games (and I mean here mostly pencil & paper RPGs, as well as various MUDs roaming the internet) which will give more role-playing possibilities than Planeshift, no matter how far it will get in its development. The only (or at least the best) way to make it more role-playing friendly is by making the community dive into the curently formed world and try to remain there, pulling the newcomers after them. The community is however far away from the developers\' reach. For the most part it is depending on the players\' activities and loyalty. Sadly, many of the Planeshift\'s \"fans\" won\'t even bother to take a peek into the world of Yliakum, instead sitting on their forums whilst playing other games and/or spending their time on irc, behaving like they were all-important. The very few of the loyal role-players don\'t seem to be enough to pull off any decent activity ingame, successfully turning Planeshift into a constant fighting arena.
There are some efforts to light a spark in Yliakum, for example Zan\'s Festival of the Hunt, but it probably isn\'t going to be enough if the \"hardcore\" role-players won\'t decide to give it a hand. Trying to get some support from the developers is probably futile as well (at least it was many times in my case).
The only way to make this world a bit brighter seems to be gathering of role-players who wouldn\'t have anything against spending some of their time on activities which might encourage ingame role-playing. With, or without developers\' support.
-
Well, the problem is that everytime I get into Planeshift I try to talk to someone, who just ignores me. or challanges me. I am not against levelling, sometimes you have to reach a certain level of skill to be able to RP who you are, just as backup, but what happens in the Hydlaa Plaza is sheer insanity, I think that in the meantime Hydlaa would drown in blood. The only way I found to distract them from eternal fighting, was hiding all my belongings around Hydlaa and saying over auction channel that there are treasures hid. Well at least that worked, and for ten minutes everyone crept around Hydlaa exploring each dark corner. It didnt encourage them to RP, i know, but at least it distracted them from eternal fighting.
What I want to say is that talking here on the forums wont do anything. And even if it just clears the plaza for ten minutes, and maybe encourages some to explore instead of just Hack n Slash.
And there is RPing going on. Mainly at the tavern, because it is a better place to RP. It\'s warm in there you can sit down. and you can buy some ale from draklar :D.
-
Sigh.
Timesheets.
Forge Non-Tavern accepted RP areas for variety.
Talk while you fight things until someone responds.
It\'s easy to do.
--
However, it WOULD help VASTLY if there was a sound made when you\'re not looking at the screen, and someone starts talking. It\'s a GREAT way to allow multi-tasking to prevent boredom.
-
I haven\'t read all the posts here but I do want to say one thing ...
Stop whining about it and fix it!
I find a gazillion threads whining about the lack of roleplay but I barely find any with good initiatives to improve roleplaying. Sometimes ideas, yes but those get forgotten soon and nobody bothers to start them up.
Well I am trying to fix it and anyone\'s help is welcome.
Look for the Hydlaa Festival of the Hunt and make your contribution to create some more RP in PS ;)

This is where it has gone:
THE SIXTH EPOCH: NEW ORDER
Talad smiled at what he created. His people now had the power to shape their own world. He stood back, waiting to see what they would create. At first, all seemed to go well. The people were happy and thriving, multiplying faster than he had thought possible. But this made him happy also. More people meant more worshippers, and that is what he wished. Why he and Laanx had come to this world in the first place. Even thoughts of his lost friend and the temple that was built in her name could not dampen his spirits for long. It was a joyous time.
Laanx, however, seethed with anger and hate. He was displeased that Talad had achieved such happiness while he was forced to suffer behind his damned mask. Long he thought, trying to think of a revenge that would hurt Talad the most. He had missed out on the last opportunity, and would not do so again. Laanx was watching how happy Talad had made his people when it suddenly struck him, the perfect revenge. He would not strike Talad directly. No, he was far too powerful for that. Instead, Laanx thought with evil glee, he would strike at his enemy?s very heart?his people. Laanx began weaving powers together, twisting them from the Crystal in devious ways. For years he prepared his spell, his burning hate fueling him to even greater cruelness. Finally, it was done. Laanx stared at what he had created. It was a fist sized crystal, blue as the Azure Sun itself. Laanx grinned evilly. It was perfect. The seed to Talad?s destruction. Laanx laughed as he disguised himself as an old beggar and teleported to the outskirts of the city of Hydlaa. He then shuffled his way into town, snickering the entire way. No one took much note of the ragged beggar, thinking that he was merely insane and harmless. Insane, yes. Harmless, no. Laanx laughed at their foolishness. They would all learn soon who was the true power. He laid the blue crystal down next to the fountain and dashed away, cackling madly. A few people came to see what had gotten the beggar?s attention.
Talad watched the children playing in the fields. More than anything, he loved to hear their laughter. But then he heard something else. Something different. Curious, he followed the noise to its source and gasped in shock at what he saw. The plaza of Hydlaa was in an uproar. People were everywhere, fighting, shouting, begging, and killing. For a moment, Talad stood aghast, not knowing what to think of the sight he was beholding. Coming to himself, he rushed into the plaza ordering the chaos to stop. None listened. They continued as they were, seeming oblivious to his presence. Finally, he grasped one of them by the shoulders. The man?s eyes burned with a cold fury. -What goes on here?- Talad demanded. -Why do you fight, shout, beg, and kill when I have asked you to stop?- The man struggled for a moment, then spat out words that Talad did not understand. They sounded almost like the speech of normal people, only twisted and befouled. As Talad released the man in horror, another raced up. -I challenge you!- he shouted. -You would challenge your god?- Talad asked of him. Instead of answering, the man turned away and rushed to another man babbling in the twisted language. -I challenge you!- he shouted. They then began to fight, until one of them laid dead. Able to take no more, Talad fled the plaza, retreating where none could find him.
The uninfected people saw this and became frightened, many retreating the wilderness, where the power of the blue crystal could not touch them. Others disappeared entirely. But there were some who saw what was happening to their beloved world, their home, and they decided that something must be done. They gathered the strongest Guilds together, planning their next move. After much deliberation, they knew what had to be done to take back the land. With steel in their hearts and hope in their souls, they?
How it ends is up to us.
-
Well i am ready to dive in and help.. but you cant RP a tradesmen if there arent any tradeskills (yeah im a blacksmith.. sorry i cant smith or do anything.. what do you mean thats stupid? Im RPing to be something that doesn\'t exist.. duh!)
But at the rate updates have been cranking out i should be entering the fray in no time :D
EDIT:awsome story UtM :)
-
Well lack of in-game skills is indeed a problem which yet has to be fixed. I\'m not sure however which path should be taken to achieve the best results in solving the problems connected with it. Adding more skills or teaching people to base their characters on more things than just the skills and abilities.
Many people would develop their characters solely basing them on skills that they use. \"I am a warrior who has the riding skills, so I need skills like swords, shields, heavy armour and riding.\" Possibility to role-play the chosen character without such features appears to be impossible for some people. However, in the times of MB, when there was absolutely no in-game skills to use and possibility to fight was just a far off dream, I did roleplay a warrior (and now that fighting is implemented I changed into a bard... irony, I know). All I had to do was create the personality of my character. With enough of role-players ingame it was quite easy to communicate with others as a warrior that I was supposed to be. I didn\'t really have to go to tavern and show off with how many rogues I killed. By my way of talking on the street, in the temple or in the dungeons I showed my personality and possibly the \"class\" that I tried to stick with.
I remained like that for one and a half year (or so), so forgive me for saying this, but excuses in the form of little number of skills appear very poor to me.
-
First of all, thanks Under, I don\'t know of any way to say it better for a role playing game then that. I am truly impressed with your story!
Secound, no wounder it never seems to rain in planeshift, there\'s pleanty of tears to keep the crops growing...
I\'m sorry to offend people by that last statement, but it\'s easy to fix your complaints...
Start Role playing!
Yes people! for the low-low price of an intelegent thought, you too can make beggers sing a drinking song for you! Yes, you can go and select the humble life of a miner! ( I did that for my first month before I was strong enough to start tef-hunting, I\'m a level 7 in mining) And not only that, but if you act now, we\'ll include the abaility to BOTH ingnor your chalengers AND go get drunk in the tavren and flirt with some of the prettiest Enkidukai girls around! So what are you waiting for? ACT NOW!
I\'m almost sorry for the sarcasam (almost), but this world has been made open for one and all. There is room for both powerlevelers (which I do) and for roleplayers (which I do also). Main point, if you don\'t like it, the rules of the game do allow you to change things by example rather than complaining. No I didn\'t say it was easy, but there\'s at least a couple of people out there that I\'ve \"helped\" to understand that they should at least roleplay a good reason to fight, so it can be done.
-
First off theres nothing i love more then another smart-ass :) (seriously.. and that commertial thing was a nice touch)
But all enkidukai girls look the same XD beside though i enjoy a good neko girl much more then the average man(ok, ok wayyy more then even the fantical neko freak :3 ) i dont like them too neko and not enough girl :/ besides demonesses (diaboli) are where its at :P
At least knowing another smartass is out there fighting the fight is almost enough to make me want to play again and stick it to the d00ds with a rightous fury (in as much as I can be \"rightous\" ) except i need tria for a pick and a pick for tria.. the same problem i mentioned the very day CB came out \'sides wipes is in like a week from what i hear.. i\'ll brainstorm anti-l33t tatics until then :)
Ahh nothing like a fresh point of view.. Thanks Dregan
-
:D
Thanks guys. When I finally get PS to agree with my PC again, then I shall start playing as Arnigus Faymor, Head of the Sheeple Foundation...yes, that Arnigus. I figured I might as well go for the most unique, most challenging character I could think of.
A semi-successfull, almost morbidly fat, balding, cowardly banker who happens to be able to run very fast. (Read \"The Art of Tripping\" to find out how.) No fighting, no \'leveling up\', no skills. I will run at the first sign of danger; I won\'t even own a weapon.
Not challenging, you think. How can playing this type of character be challenging? You don\'t even have to fight.
Wrong. Every moment I am ingame, I will be fighting for the RP in MMORPG. Not though conflict of the sword, but through words and action. We have the power to change things, not the Devs. They merely give us the structure to build on. The \'New Order\' has yet to be achieved, and even though Arnigus is afraid of his own shadow (and bunnies), he shall fight for it to his last gasping breath. He shall sacrifice every last one of his Sheeples, if needed. The world must be whole.
\"Not everyone can be a hero.\"--words to RP by.
*edit* that\'s puppets, not bunnies.
-
hmm I cant say that there aint no RP, today I earned my first 100 Trias by fortune telling, and barkeeping.
-
I am an rp but at the moment there is nothing to rp in planeshift?
I want to power level in planeshift because that?s what my guy is like. He cares for no one and would kill and slash a kid up just cause he feels like it. And he wants to get so much power to even become GODLY! for he walks alone and his shadow cast the only one that walks beside him.
-
I think it would be nice to have rp guidlines included in the players guide. I know most people don\'t read that stuff but few do, and it might have some positive effect.
What i mean under rp guidelines is few things like:
-Name rules
-Not mentioning levels of skills, avoiding cyber-languge
-If you speak ooc use brackets, this is done by quite a few, but a newcommers are sometimes confused
-...
can\'t remember anything else right now...
The best compliment i got while rp-ing in planeshift was
\"you do know you\'re not an npc?\"
and i earned 2 trias and piece of meat from being a bartender

I earned something between 8 and 10 circles (or maybe more?), but I won\'t moan about it (nope, not at all)... I\'m just a modest head barkeep...
On second thought I haven\'t earned even a broken tria as a bard... most dishearting indeed...

Without working quests, most of the RP is kinda hard to get into. Yes I read the back story, yes, I RP when I find another RPer, but I am not about to stand in the middle of town and go into a narrative.
-
Why not, Lyrah? Which would you think would come sooner... The devs (not an insult, I just know how spare time projects get) coming up with new material for us to play with, or you? Why don\'t you and Draklar get together and solve each other\'s problems. Draklar, you go through the plaza singing, and you Lyrah can go around taking requests and donations. I will pay well for entertainment as I do my buisness!

I am atm standing in hydlaa plaza rping with people. I need no objects or quests to rp. Just a topic of conversation.

The purpose of this release is to test the various systems like combat and magic. Keep in mind that PS is not finished. You are not playing a full MMORPG game. You are testing an alpha version of an MMORPG game.
This is planned. Just give us time to implement it. First we must stabilize the current features however before we continue implementing new things.
3. Kick the duelers out of town. Need I say more? What kind of outlaw game are we making here? Perhaps even turn off fighting for a while, or limit it severly. We don\'t need to kill each other to RP.
In general that may be true. On the other hand fighting and RP \'can\' go hand in hand if done well. It is just that most people don\'t do it like that. However, I don\'t think that\'s a problem of the game engine really. It needs to be solved in more \'human\' ways. Communication and such.
4. What is the point of guilds if they can\'t do anything? Give them guild \'quests\'. Something to do besides declaring war on everything in sight. Create some sort of political \'influence\' system they can effect. Nothing fancy now, to start with. That can come later.
All nice ideas. Takes time to implement.
5. Let players run/work in some shops. The NPCs do it. I\'m sure we have a few players out there that can assist the NPCs. Even if they\'re just a stock boy. Let them hand out a few quests.
Again lot of work to implement.
There are many other things that can bring RPing back to Planeshift, but it needs to be done before all the roleplayers leave. If that happens, you might as well start handing out swords, because that\'s all you\'ll need. :(
People seem to forget that PlaneShift is not a game yet. You\'re all testing! Remember that! We are using you to test the abilities of certain features in our MMORPG game engine. We will gradually add more features as soon as previous features stabilize sufficiently.
Greetings,

Uh i feel so dirty now .
Basically we are guinea pigs?! great!;)
Lately a lot of people hear that planeshift is a free MMORPG, they download it and start playing it...and then complain about it. Most of those people don\'t read the player guide or the info on the website. If they did they would know the state of this game. I mean the game version is 0.3.008!!!

Actually we are more like gimps, to be raped by lag, linkdeath and various bugs. It\'s dirty I suppose, but I like it rough anyhow :P
-
I agree with you Jorrit. All of this takes time. But once a path is taken, sometimes it is hard to go back.
Take a nice guy who never got in trouble in his life. He gets a little drunk one day and starts a fistfight with an uppity priest who is really asking for it. After that, he is labeled forever as a no good trouble maker to all but those who really know the guy.
The same aplies here. Implimenting combat and skill levels before other aspects of the game has given it the label of \'Hack-n-Slash\' to a lot of people who don\'t know the game for what is is meant to be. This draws other H-n-Sers to the game, causing the snowball effect. This drives out some RPers. Look around, we all see it.
I\'m not saying you\'re doing a bad job. On the contrary. The game, so far, is beyond all expectations. I aplude all your efforts. Not many have that dedication.
I just can\'t silence that little voice that keeps asking me if maybe you took the wrong path. From now on I will trust your judgment, and try. :)

*grabs her quill and writes a few rough drafts of her first oratory*
*mutters*
will I get hanged for calling the red tower gloomy central? Na...best to not risk it, that guy by the door looked too serious to infuriate. It was hard to tell if he was thinking of me as an ingredient in tonights dinner or the next sacrifice.
*absently dips tail into the ink*
Oh Bother! Oh nevermind, my tail is black, the ink is black..only I will know.
I KNOW!...form a miners union and protest the harsh conditions! *looks at the guards* Hmmm that might not be a good idea. Besides, no trias in doing that. *pssshah sound*
*chews a claw*
Hmmm Ok, NOW I got it, form an explorers guild, then get lost once a month together. Then the next month get lost seperate and compare unintelligable notes.
*scratches ear with tip of quill*
HEY! now that idea has some merit, as long as dues pay for the food and drink used on the road that is.
