Title: Hydlaa wants *you* there!
Post by: Zan on April 09, 2005, 02:51:02 pm
The grand Hydlaa Festival of the Hunt will be an event no self-respecting citizen of Yliakum can afford to miss.

This festival will host tournaments, free to enter for all who are skilled in magic, weaponry or unarmed combat to test their power.  We will also find out who will be the ultimate champion of Hydlaa as s/he can stand undefeated for up to two hours in the ring. Anyone will be allowed to challenge our champion and should they be victorious take their place as reigning champion. Those who are undefeated in their categories will recieve a prize, as well as smaller prizes for those who managed to win atleast one duel.

For those who \'d rather measure their tracking and hunting skills with others we will be offering the hunting game. The hunter that can collect the most trophies within one hour without breaking the rules will be declared master huntsman and recieve their prize. Second and third places will also recieve prizes. In this game people with little fighting skills will stand as much chance as those grand swordfighters to come out a winner so it doesn\'t matter how experienced you are.

Aside from those main events there will be bards, storytellers, merchants, dicegames and food for everyone.

And of course you are all most welcome to cheer on your favorite champion or hunter.

All this will take place on saturday the 23rd of April from 10 am till 10 pm GMT  in the Arena. (check this site for the exact time: http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com)
The entrance to the arena can be found to the right of Harnquist the blacksmith, with your back to the plaza. Follow the tunnel until you will see a large building surrounded by mountains. Spectators can go to the tribunes in the middle of the arena while those willing to participate in tournaments should find their way to the fighting pits.
A website is currently under developement, thanks to mikewsnc, where we will set up a hall of fame (and shame) to honor the winners. There will also be a page dedicated to all those who aided me in the realisation of this project.

Tournaments will be held throughout the day. The rules are simple: only use the methods assigned to that specific tournament (ex.: only unarmed, magic or weapons) and no leaving the fighting pit during a duel.

The hunting games will be held on 3 pm and 5 pm GMT (can be compiled into one game if we lack participants). Registration in advance, by replying to this thread, is required.

We will end the day with the final tournament starting at 8 pm and declaring the ultimate champion at 10 pm.

All tournaments and games will be supervised by assigned referees and supervisors. Failure to follow the rules will result in disqualification.

---------------------------------

We will be accepting registrations for the hunting game underneath. Please post the desired time, either 3 pm or 5 pm, and your character\'s full name in your reply underneath.

If you have any other questions, remarks or ideas please contact me through PM or email instead of replying to this thread.

Are crowds welcome to watch? I doubt I could beat a limp noodle in the arena...but I would love  to cheer the fight on from the stand.

*stands on the edge* Kick him! that\'s it, WATCH OUT...Hey! that is dirty fighting...that is surely a Yellow card. Where is that ref!!

OOOooooo now that was a good one!

I will be there to watch.

***added afterward to help clarify time zones**
Central time is -5hours GMT during daylight savings...which started a week or two ago and lasts until fall.
Those in the US can use that fact to figure their times out.

Don\'t make it monthly. It wouldn\'t be special anymore. Every six months perhaps. Any more frequent and it will become just a common thing and not very many people will come.

Post by: mikewsnc on April 11, 2005, 05:09:56 am
true....ok maybe every four months...that would be 3 a year...what you think

7pm-7am on a saturday...sounds ok to me, though i already know whos gona win.

*Extra, extra read all about it! Manden wins ALL duels....some how (you know what im talking about Blitzers :P)*

And maybe make it just before the Data Wipe...that way we can get rid of all our food, weps ect so all the newbs feel like they earned something :D
Title:
Post by: Zan on April 11, 2005, 12:48:39 pm
Lyrah, of course crowds are most welcome to watch and cheer :) Also even if you can\'t do much damage, you can still play and perhaps even win the hunting game so feel free to sign up for that.

Robin .. signing you up for everything ;) I \'m assuming your Robinmagus character?

Aranis, thanks again for the work on the website and getting lucky with work is great to hear.

Icefalcon, we are looking into making this a bi-annual event, meaning it will be held twice a year if it turns out to be succesful. The URPS, along with several individuals have been very helpful with sponsoring and providing manpower so I think it is definitely off to a good start. Monthly would indeed be a bit much.

Mondo glad to have you come .. we \'ll see about who is going to win though ;) And the problem with holding it just before the wipe is that nobody really knows when the wipe will be exactly. Or at least nobody is telling. We all know it will come \'soon\' though so this is the perfect time for a testride to see if we can hold it more often in the future.

I totally agree - it will loose it\'s \'Special Event\' feel and  (IMHO) it will become a headache for the organisers to keep it interesting.  Once every 3 months sounds about right, it will give the organisers plenty of time to sort things out and won\'t loose it\'s appeal to players.
Title:
Post by: Zan on April 11, 2005, 12:55:19 pm
Indeed Adyna also seeing that it has cost me at least a month, in between real life obligations, to organise. Of course it will become easier to organise now that most of the basics have been laid down but still every month would keep me almost permanently occupied and it would take away that special event feeling.

Sounds interesting though I thihnk 1/2 the people there will be powerleveling non-rpers in it for the prizes.
Ill try to be there to cheer on the rp side :D
Title:
Post by: Zan on April 11, 2005, 10:44:17 pm
True .. but what better way to get the powerlevelers involved in RP life than giving them a chance to bash eachothers skulls in while us RPers cheer them on .. or yell at them if you prefer. ;)

Even though they may be powerlevelers .. if they \'re there they will be RPing to an extent.

will there be mixed tournaments? I mean like a all weapon/magics tournament?

About power levelers... that can be Role Play... the story of the character can be of a guy that was son of a great mage and of a great fighter, so he learned and got interested both things and trained hard to do them...
Or those powerlevelers may play as a semi-god char :P
Title:
Post by: Zan on April 13, 2005, 12:05:11 am
The grand tournament at the end of the festival will be mixed. The others will be separate for the simple reason that the three different combat techniques are rather unbalanced so far in my eyes.

It can, but IMNSHO, in 99% of all cases, it isn\'t a single bit about RP. Therefore, PL deserves absolutely no respect, and unless a PL can prove they actually tried to stick to their role from the beginning, instead of afterwards creating a makeshift story that somehow \"explains\" why they are uber, I don\'t see PL as RP.

I know this was a joke, but still: I will not reward grinding with a status boost. In fact, I\'ll do the opposite.

Anyway, on the tournament: I will try to participate, though I cannot yet promise that I will be online at the day / the times required for it. Thus, I cannot pre-register for the hunt.

I would love to participate somehow. Quite frankly though, I\'m an RPer. I don\'t find endlessly clicking on monsters fascinating, so the chances are that my magical skills won\'t be anything special. Is there somehow I can contribute or partake in this festivity that has to do with RP and is more than cheering?
Title:
Post by: Zan on April 14, 2005, 02:21:50 pm
As many as you can imagine and some more. Our bard Draklar will be there telling stories to the crowd, we will be having dice games. Also the hunting game requires no skills at all other than tracking down your target and not getting killed. Anyone can play.

Aside from that you are most welcome to RP in any way you wish. I can provide you with room would you wish to open a stand of some sort. To sell wares, advertize a new invention/magic spell, play games, ... anything you want.

I am providing an oppertunity to RP and even give the powerlevelers no choice but to RP in my festival. I can\'t imagine and create everything though .. you, the players need to build the story and make this event into a succes.

Edit to add: Forums are now up and running on the website!

I can do the unnarmed. My starting stats were 20 in unnarmed. And I\'m sure that that hasn\'t changed.
What is a good stat to enter the ring with? Is 20 enough?

20 skill points in unarmed .. that \'s more than I have in swordfighting so I think you can get quite a way with that one.

I definitely hope to see you there then. :)

And Mike .. every website is loading slow for me at the moment so I \'m afraid I can\'t check for you.

Post by: SeiferRune on April 16, 2005, 04:31:24 pm
I would be there if I could be Zan, I already gave you my 6700 tria so hope your happy with that :P

I would like to do a background story for the event like how it originated etc and then later we can add to the story saying that it became apart of the local culture and tradition. Then atleast newcomers can read about it.

RP\'ers will also have a good time I believe, if I was there I would be more then happy to designate some time to running a few RP\'s on the day, like chatter about an afterparty at the tavern and just random talking of who they think will win and meeting new people. You know, just some IC stuff. Although bards etc will be there so make the most of  it and if more RP events are required I will make it my duty to make it apart of the festival.. Zan will suffer horribly if it isn\'t :D
Title:
Post by: ajdaha on April 16, 2005, 06:47:56 pm
I\'ll come, but what did you say. There is an entrance fee? of 6700 tria you say. Oh okay, I\'ll just go stand over there, do I have to pay for that?
:)

PS: do you expect the wipe to be before or after this?
Title:
Post by: Phinehas on April 16, 2005, 07:19:06 pm
Ajdaha, as you should well know, the chances that the wipe takes place within the next week are extremely slim.
Title:
Post by: Zan on April 16, 2005, 07:37:49 pm
Your donation is much obliged Seiferrune. I also like the background story idea. I also have some interesting elements in my head I could put in there but not the time to work them out sadly.
As for the suffering part .. gimme a chance first huh :P

Ajdaha .. don\'t worry, there is no entrance fee. It is free for anyone to participate. The 6700 trias Seiferrune gave me were a donation to the festival which will be used to reward the winners of the tournaments.

And as Phinehas said .. it is very unlikely the wipe will happen in the next week. Even if it should the festival will continue, there will just be no prizes and chances to win are a bit more equal.

Like I have said several times before this first festival is planned before the wipe so it is an excellent tryout for possible and probably future festivals.
Title:
Post by: ajdaha on April 16, 2005, 09:08:26 pm
I like the idea. It should be fun.
I might be one of the few who actually want the wipe to happen before the festival. But non need to get into that discussion.

Hello I would like to participate, but I can\'t promise nothing yet because I can only play PS using my sister\'s laptop pc and she only comes home on weekends :( But sometimes like this weekend she arrived friday night and left saturday afternoon so I could only play PS for a few hours! But even if I can\'t confirm my application in time for the armed contest, if I can, I\'ll drop by and at least see the festivities from the bench :P

Can I just ask, if the devs shall be prepared to do the wipe before next saturday, will they do it, or wait until the event passes?
Title:
Post by: Zan on April 17, 2005, 07:34:44 pm
I haven\'t asked the devs to wait so to my knowledge they \'ll go ahead with the wipe whenever they want and can .. festival or not.

May I ask why you want the wipe happening before instead of after this festival so bad?
Title:
Post by: ajdaha on April 17, 2005, 09:30:21 pm
Basically, cause I think I\'ll stand a better chance. Having only started playing fable this friday. I haven\'t leveled much. But my starting character is superb with 20 unnarmed and 17 azure.
At least I was told that that was superb. + there are more skills which I haven\'t mentioned. All at character creation.

And anyway, it would make the competition so much fairer. isn\'t it obvious?
Title:
Post by: Zan on April 17, 2005, 10:53:02 pm
Well competition isn\'t always fair .. with everyone at the same level competition would be reduced to pure luck.  But I do understand your point of view .. for you it would obviously be better. Though those stats are quite superb .. especially the 20 in unarmed. I \'m not sure anyone else has that much since I don\'t think most people bother to train it.

personally I bet that it would happen on december the 24th.

Did I say Fable? I meant PS, lol, that is embarassing.

Anyway, I say that we shouldn\'t allow red monk to participate, on the grounds that he is intimidating everyone else :) (including me).

2) In a certain post by a dev I read that the wipe could be this week or in 4 weeks. He/she didn\'t say that it would last till summer, so.

3) also, I don\'t care about the money in the competition I just want to be in the hall of fame. Why should anyone care about the money when our guys are gonna get wiped :(

Alrighty, completely behind schedule the new Hydlaa Festival Patch is finally available here:

You will have to copy the link into your address bar to download it as this forum won\'t link it correctly.

http://www.freewebs.com/thesentinelsoftheragnarok/festivalpatch.zip

Please note that this is a 3rd party add on to the PS game.  The makers of Planeshift are in no way responsible for the contents of this patch, use at your own risk.

This patch is temporary, and will go away as soon as you run the updater.

I hope all of you will at least try this out.  I will make an even better one for the next festival!

That is if any one person actually likes this :)

Hmmm, downstream for me is about 18kbs not awsome but alright.  I wonder why it is so slow.

As for mac version, its easy enough to copy the files into their respective locations manually.

Also, this patch isn\'t necessary for anyone to attend the festival. It just adds some graphics ands such.  Mostly posters advertising it and such, but also puts new banners in the Arena.

Even at one K, it should only take about 4 hours to download at maximum I\'d think :\'(

If anyone gets it finished downloading and can mirror it for others please do.

This is the first of what may be more gfx updates for further festivals.

This is a proof-of-concept, just to see if it is feasible and to see if people like it.

Also technically its not really a patch its more a MOD, but I called it a patch so I would feel cooler.   It is nothing official, just a  neatish mod to help the town look like it has been preparing for a festival.

If anyone gets it downloaded and can post a faster link I\'d be grateful too.  Its not a big deal, but if it works out well, then I\'ll continue with the project for future festivals. I\'ll try to get myself ftp access setup  with Lishom the URPS and SOR Site manager to our site to prevent this from taking place in the future.

So, is the festival in about 11 hours?

If not, when will it take place in Central(USA) time?

OOOooooo now that was a good one!

I will be there to watch.

***added afterward to help clarify time zones**
Central time is -5hours GMT during daylight savings...which started a week or two ago and lasts until fall.
Those in the US can use that fact to figure their times out.
same . the stuff in the arena is pretty damn tough. maybee there will be  spectating contests ?

Snobaste, just check that website given in the very first post on this thread. It \'ll give you the GMT timezone .. so when that says 10 am, it \'s party time ;)

dying_inside, I recommend participating in one of the hunting games, where even the not so strong stand a decent chance of winning.

Or you could always try your hand at some dice when a game leader is available ;)

2 hours and 25 minutes until the festival officially starts!

Please please please  can someone give me a download URL that is faster than the freewebs one - I need the modified graphics for the screenies for the newspaper, so this is a matter of life and death (sort of).

Well the festival is over.

I would like to thank everyone for participating,  cheering or just being there to enjoy the atmosphere.

If you missed it or missed a part of it you can read a brief summary on the website\'s forums and there will be a hall of fame on the website itself. http://www.ps-festival.cjb.net/

Lastly I am open to any remarks or comments you may have had on the event. This was a first trial run and while it didn\'t always go completely flawless I think it went pretty well and most seemed to have had quite a bit of fun.

I had two unnarmed fights, the two last fights in the festival. Even though I only won one of them, and non were proper fights, I feel happy because my fight brought the thing to a close. Do I get a trophy?

BTW, I like this song...

Yeah, congratulations Ajdaha.

I\'d also like to congratulate Rioth and Zabeal, the winner and runner-up in the magic tournament. Good job, arcanists, good job indeed.

Yep! Congradulations on a very sucessful festival.  I think it proves such an event is quite feasible, and you did an excellent job administering it.

I hope you will continue this initative, and now that we all know how it works even more can be planned and done.  Let me know how the URPS can help, as this time we\'ll have more time to gather our full stregnth so help support it.

Good luck with everything, and congrats.  Few people, if any could have pulled this off as well as you did.

Thank you everyone, I am glad you all had a good time at the Festival.

I promise I will let you all know in time when the next event will come. There will be more festivals like this definitely but probably no more than twice a year. At least the ones of this size. Smaller events will probably be popping up more often though :)
