Title: Telumehtar's Weapons and Objects
Post by: Telumehtar on April 10, 2005, 05:20:03 am
It\'s been almost 4 years now since I\'ve touched a 3D Modelling program - I gave up just about the same time as I realised I couldn\'t download the mammoth 3ds Max 3 on my 28.8K modem... Ah-Hem.

Anyhow, as you can imagine - I\'m a little ropey, but in an effort to keep my interest levels up - I thought I would post my progress here in this thread. I intend on making loads of random low-poly objects, and then which ever ones (if any) the team would like to use, they will be welcome to. I\'m going to do a few weapons first, then I have some other weird items in mind. But for now, some pictures of me getting used to low-poly modelling for a change.

First of all, the texture still needs some work - but this is the first thing I\'ve successfully EVER UVW textured something. A Japanese Daito / Katana;

A random Manga-esque sword (Untextured):

And a Japanese \'Earth-Dagger\' (Throwing Dagger) (Untextured):

Finally, not at all PlaneShift related, but for any of you that remember that old classic game Dungeon Master (please say some of you do), I started remaking some of the creatures in 3d:

Sorry to say I don\'t remember Dungeon Master, but those are some really nice models :D ! I like the kitana and the \"earth dagger\" (kunai is another name for it), really hope to see more from you ;) !

Webhost returned to life, (ie. Images are back) sorry for the last 5 hours of downtime - my apache service dies \'sometimes\' on a Sunday morning - I have absolutely NO IDEA why. It\'s quite frustrating (obviously, ALL my sites go down).

The Kunai now has a skin, and so is ready for slashing, stabbing, parrying and throwing action! Unfortunately, this bad-boy kicks in at 140 triangles, and I was hoping to keep it under 100. Oh well, it\'s as much a melee weapon as a thrown weapon - so maybe I\'ll make a lower poly version for when it\'s already been thrown.

for a thrown model, you could actually use an alpha mapped plane, or a 3 sided cylinder that\'s been extruded a few times and has a plane at the end with an alpha map for the hole.

You need to buy 3D Studio Max 3, you can search for it online and I\'m sure you\'ll find there website. Costs a lot however, unless you just want to download a demo or something. I use Cinema 4D XL 8.5, which is okay and easy to use. You can download the demo for that at http://www.cinema4d.com

Studio Max is at some rediculous version now like 6 or 7 I believe, but yeah - it\'s certainly not cheap. I think there is a gamers version, that\'s free - but I really don\'t know how limited it is. Get MilkShape or Blender or Wings 3D. There are a million posts about these bits of software all over the forum - so I\'ll say no more about them here.

Last upload for today - I would love to see these as carryable items, so that you can have standard bearers as parts of large groups. I think it would be really cool if you could give your group a morale bonus by having one of your members carrying this around...

I like the flag standard. I believe there was a thread somewhere that suggested placing unique art on flags, sheilds, capes, and such. I still think that\'s a good idea...but we\'re a long way from things like that.

Good work. :)
