Title: The True reason for the lag.
Post by: Black_rose on April 16, 2005, 02:02:05 am
Has any one else wondered why the lag is so much higher than in other games??? some are barely affected while others (like myself) are lagged to the point where they can not even play.
Well, i have meant to post this for several months. the Ps Developement team wants one server, this can never work. We need at least twelve servers (two for each man operated continent) so that people will not be so messed up. and I\'m not saying a server to stick you in for good, but something for an option, mabye a universal server as well, but this will not work. to many people from to many places with to many connection types means to much lag! we need multible servers. this is not a wish, but a warning, this game can not go much further without more servers.

We want to go with a distrubuted server architecture and I am sure one day we will.  But at the moment we don\'t have the man power to support that.  I would think that would be something we would develop after the Steel Blue release.

Someone told me a long time ago in a pvp debate (someone with credit a dev i think) that they wanted to keep one server so the community would stay together.

All the servers would act off of one backbone so it would still be one community.  We don\'t have nearly enough people online now to warrant splintering the servers based on geographical regions.

He\'s not getting net lag. He\'s getting bad performance from his PC. Unless he\'s on a 16k modem.

Yeah what is he complaining about.. I live a kajillion miles away from the server and I don\'t lag one bit. MMORPG\'s never take hardly any internet, I think last time I checked usage was 1k worth.

Purely based on the power of your personal computer, if it can\'t handle fifty people moving around in a region, then PS just wont work. Graphics card and processor speed.

There are at least two kinds of \"lag\" that I know of, one is network lag, could be server side OR client side. And then there is \"system chew\" (that is what I call it at least), this is where your system is either too weak/slow or there is a code versus system driver issue.  Sometimes it is hard/impossible to tell the difference unless you are a good coder.

I routinely get over 60 FPS in PS...and I tend to have a better set up than most that cry for a free game, and run a high end DSL.

So the PS network code hasn\'t improved since MB??
I see clear difference or it\'s something else?
