Title: Screenshot Competition!!!
Post by: Methos on April 18, 2005, 01:32:59 pm
Welcome to the Planeshift Screenshot Competition!     18/04/2005

This is a Competition for all around to see who can take the finest screenshots in planeshift which will be used for the purpose of new loading screens in Planeshift. The BEST screenshots will be used as loading screens in Planeshift,
*one screenshot selected for each area of the game (excluding the forest/road to Ojaveda)*

*Here is an example of an acceptable screenshot:
http://free.angeltowns.com/methos/Pics/planesewers.jpg*

*This is an example of what that screenshot will turn out like as a loading screen:
http://free.angeltowns.com/methos/Pics/loading_sewers.jpg*

RULES & REQUIREMENTS:

1. The screenshots must have NO forground menu\'s visible, if there is a small amount of forground (likely the topmost button menu) on the screen you must move the menu bar up enough so that it can be hidden behind the later added images.

2. I will be adding all the extra graphics myself so please only send plain screenshots. Non-plain images will NOT be accepted sorry.

3. Please link all your images to another website like \"imageshack.us\" or \"free.angeltowns.com\"
*DO NOT POST YOUR SCREENSHOTS DIRECTLY ONTO THE FORUM.*

4. All screenshots are to be taken in no less than 800x600 resolution.

5. We are in need for screenshots for all areas of the game except the forest/road to Ojaveda. These areas include:
Ojavada
Death Realm
Sewers
Dungeon
Hyddla Plaza
The Arena
-Any others I may have missed

*Only ONE screenshot for each area will be chosen, however you may send in as many screenshots as you like*

6. Please save the files in .BMP format... (I do understand that most servers wont let you upload large files so if you cannot upload your original .BMP then please save a second copy of your screenshot in .JPG format and upload that.
*.BMP files are a higher quality than .JPG files so please keep your original so it can be used if your image is chosen*

7. The competition will end on the 7th of May 7/5/2005.

1st prize for each of the BEST screenshots will be the grand satisfaction that your screenshot will be used as a loading screen on the area you have captured.

Disclaimer: I reserve the right not to use any particular screenshot, should no suitable screenshot for a particular area be entered in the competition. All screenshots are subject to the scrutiny of the higher powers in Planeshift AKA - The Devs. Also it is entirely possible that no screenshots will be selected at all in the event of (but not limited to): The Devs deciding not to use these new loading screens, My death, Natural disasters, etc etc.

Methos/Sarrow: I think the minimum should be raised to 1024.  800 is way too small to look good for those of us that play at 1280 and 1600.

Also, I\'m wondering as to the reading skills of you two.

Greetings,

I don\'t know how the loading screens are going to be added to the game, if this isn\'t an official thing... but then again, I don\'t know much. Sounds good though, so here\'s my humble contribution:

Hydlaa Plaza (http://users.tkk.fi/~vrantapu/PlaneShift/Screenshots/Loading_Hydlaa_plaza2.jpg)

the Arena (http://users.tkk.fi/~vrantapu/PlaneShift/Screenshots/Loading_Arena2.jpg)

Sewers (http://users.tkk.fi/~vrantapu/PlaneShift/Screenshots/Loading_Sewer.jpg)

(1024*768 png source files available on request)

Hmm, the loading screen picture is 1024*1024 pixels, but the gfx area is only 800*600 px by default. It could be enlargened from loadwindow.xml and releaselist.xml. However, I think that there is a reason why it is so small in the first place: takes less memory and loads faster. That\'s also the only reason that I can think of to the fact that the original loading.png is 256 colours. Just my speculation though. :)

To Kiva: Nice hat ma\'am. You know, in Finnish, \'kiva\' means \'nice\'. :)

To Methos: Thanks, though if we\'re accurate, You were the first one to link pictures. ;)

Wow Demarthl you got a great pic for hyddla you should enter you would stand a huge chance of winning. But then again, I plan on entering and Efflixi can take a mean pic when he has the time. ;)

Post by: chriskl on April 19, 2005, 09:15:01 am
The loading screens are all 800x600, so no point taking higher resolution ones.
Title:
Post by: Methos on April 19, 2005, 09:15:45 am
Thanks everyone who has entered so far :) But an extra thanks goes out to Cherppow for being the first to actually LINK their photo\'s and not post them directly onto the forum.

*Dont forget when taking screenies that the most visible area thats going to be visible when they are made into loading screens, will be the right hand side of the picture.... anything on the left will be either covered over or very hard to see ;)*

Yes Platyna, a plain screenshot mean without the window decoration/characters or any other windows on your screen.

All screenshots can be taken in as high a quality as you like... When the screenshots are larger it means there is room for moving it around to get the best look for a loading screen... and since the loading screens center is actually 800x600 we cant go any lower than that.

NOTE: Although this isn\'t an \"official\" competition (meaning its not actually run by the devs) a few of the devs will be seeing the final products so ultimately it will be they who judge.

Here\'s one of the forest near the are where you can mine gold:

(I removed the image because it took up too much space on Geocities. Sorry for the inconvenience.)

BTW, Cherppow, those screens are really nice! The sewers one is my favorite.

EDIT: The image is now 800x600 and in BMP format, in accordance with Rule #6. (See below post.)

Sorry for this late notice as I didn\'t think of it at the time, but I have added another rule \"#6\"

6. Please save the files in .BMP format... (I do understand that most servers wont let you upload large files so if you cannot upload your original .BMP then please save a second copy of your screenshot in .JPG format and upload that.
*.BMP files are a higher quality than .JPG files so please keep your original so it can be used if your image is chosen*

nice work so far people.  Just a question, will any of these actually be used?
Title:
Post by: Keyaz on April 20, 2005, 04:23:57 am
not officially
Title:
Post by: Methos on April 20, 2005, 06:54:35 am
Unofficially however... If we get a set of really nice screenshots, its highly likely that the devs will like them and use them as loading screens in the near future.

Just remember: There is no \"definate yes\" that they will be used... But take some really awesome shots and the chances get higher ;) Its all up to you guys.

Seriously, people... read the rules.

Nothing against any of you inline posters personally, of course.

@Mondo: The tower one shows a map hole, not a desirable quality, and it is mainly one object filling 3/4 of the screen. Perhaps try a shot from the base of the tower looking up?

In the magic shop, I would have taken a few more steps over and one or two forward to get that weird... blue thing on the left side out.

As for the temple one, the fire is kind of distracting... I would either show all or none of the urn (or whatever it might be called).

@Snobaste: Your link is broken...

@Cherppow and Demarthl: Pretty good :D

@Wizardsrule: Perhaps try moving up to get that distracting post out of the picture, otherwise pretty good.

@Sarrow: Pretty good, I would complain about the leaves in the top, but they will be covered by the overlay.

@Methos: There\'s still bluish stuff inside the outer border of the planeshift logo on your overlay and there\'s no spot for a tips box (maybe a very translucent rounded rectangle at those coords would do it)... Also, don\'t I get some credit for helping you with that template? :P

Very nice everyone.

I was running around Hydlaa and taking some pictures for this competition. I came up with an idea of a \'Loading screen hunter\' GUI mod, that would help people take these screenshots. I hope it\'s ok to post it here, as it is strongly related to this contest.

It is very simple gui modification (3 files*) that turns the help window, into a mask showing exact locations of loading screen objects. This helps you focus and align your pictures.

Note that this mod makes the original use of your help window quite disgusting. I could not find a way to hide or move the pawsTree menu on help window, so it remains as a small cosmetic annoyance. Should the loading screen widgets be moved from original setting, the mask file should be updated to match those changes. Tested on 800*600 and 1024*768 resolutions.

*
PS/art/gui/LH_loading_mask.png
PS/data/gui/releaselist.xml
PS/data/gui/helpwindow.xml

How to apply:
- Take backup copy of the above files
- unzip the package below to your PS main dir
- run PS

How to use:
- In PS, hide all your windows
- Press H-key (or your assigned help key) to bring up the loading screen mask
- Find a nice position for a pic and focus it as you see fit, and stay still
- Press H-key again to hide the mask
- Take the screenshot.

Congratulations, your screenshot is perfectly aligned loading screen background.

Have you submitted to PS-MC.com yet? We\'d most definately accept that.. tis wonderful :)

/me pokes old complaint about tips box spillover

I could modify the tips box to sit in the progress window I suppose...

So much for trying X(

ok no more jokes...i would of thought that the fire bit shows a bit of creativity becouse not everything has to be cut and clean :P (rofl and how is it distracting its a loading screen :D )

But next time i will take the same old hydlaa with the statue screen shots that everyone does so its considerd \'nice\'

Post by: josephoenix on April 21, 2005, 04:00:44 am
Not distracting per se, more like it detracts and draws your eye away from the main focus of the image. Also, it shows a bit of weird texture warping on one of the edges. It might be different but that doesn\'t necessarily mean that it\'s any better.  :D

As for my contributions... ehe.

http://phoenixcall.net/dropbox/klyros-lawn.png

to use this, simply save it in psroot\\art\\backdrop\\ with that name and use this zoneinfo file: http://phoenixcall.net/dropbox/zoneinfo.xml (save in psroot\\data\\)

the last step to get this to work is to open psroot\\data\\gui\\releaselist.xml and add the following to the end

Code: [Select]

for those that find the tips area ugly, there\'s another version: http://phoenixcall.net/dropbox/klyros-notips.png

the only difference is that you must modify the xml added to releaselist.xml to reflect the difference in filename.

Note: I\'m not responsible if this mod breaks your planeshift install (though I hope it won\'t) also, the mod may not stick after you update.

Ahh Josephoenix... How could I forget how you helped me out, thanks dude :)... Another thanks goes out to Ghirtek who helped me alot with the template in the beginning.

I thought that bluish outline wasn\'t too bad but it can easily be fixed.

As for the tips box... I havn\'t yet been able to come up with a way to make the tips box look like part of the original design, which I believe is imperative.
I cannot just whack a translucent box over the area as it looks sloppy.

However I see you mentioned something about changing the location of the tips box to go in the console... Such a thing would be brilliant! :D If you can really move the place where the tips are displayed it would be most helpful Jose :)

Methos

P.S. Chriskl: The magic shop and the terrain region (path to ojaveda) are both the same area.. and a screenshot for that area has already been made prior to this contest.

WizardsRule: a 3 word post is not much help. Dungeons are dark by definition.

Okay, Methos, You asked for it!

http://josephoenix.ps-mc.com/tipslocation.zip

download that into your planeshift folder and extract. Everything should go to its correct folder, you just have to tell it to overwrite stuff in the way (if it overwrites and bad stuff happens, just run the updater).

for those who want to see what it does, try
http://josephoenix.ps-mc.com/almost.jpg (the text position is corrected in the version in the zip, I was just too lazy to get another screenshot)

Methos, if you want the template just come to irc.freenode.net channel #planeshift and message me.

Remember that the focus of the shot must be in the right hand side of the image - since the rest is covered with a template.

Nah, that\'d not be an actual ingame shot anymore.
However, since the left side essentially is totally clogged up anyway, it wold be possible to just cut out the appropriate part of the screenshot and place it in the rigth place.
Anyway, on my next visit to the DR I\'ll try to re-take the screenies with a more appropriate focus.

After looking through all the Hydlaa shots I\'m not seeing any that are perfect.  A few are pretty good.  Sorrow\'s is pretty good, but isn\'t placed correctly to look good in the loading screen (the temple is too high).  I think Efflixi\'s has about the right positions, but I think it could use some work in the composition.  Maybe if you took that shot a few paces to the right so that the statue is silhouetted (sp?) against the sky it would be better.  Focal points and such always look better silhouetted than in front of something (especially another focal point - the temple).  This is why the females in commercials (or The Price is Right) always hold the product they are showing to the side, never in front of them.

Hello.

Here\'s some additional participants. I tried not to take too similar pics to those that have already been posted.

Arena (http://users.tkk.fi/~vrantapu/PlaneShift/Screenshots/LoadingScreens/arena01.jpg)
Death realm 1 (http://users.tkk.fi/~vrantapu/PlaneShift/Screenshots/LoadingScreens/death_realm01.jpg)
Death realm 2 (http://users.tkk.fi/~vrantapu/PlaneShift/Screenshots/LoadingScreens/death_realm07.jpg)
Dungeon 1 (http://users.tkk.fi/~vrantapu/PlaneShift/Screenshots/LoadingScreens/dungeon02.jpg)
Dungeon 2 (http://users.tkk.fi/~vrantapu/PlaneShift/Screenshots/LoadingScreens/dungeon05.jpg)
Hydlaa plaza 1 (http://users.tkk.fi/~vrantapu/PlaneShift/Screenshots/LoadingScreens/hydlaa02.jpg)
Hydlaa night 2 (http://users.tkk.fi/~vrantapu/PlaneShift/Screenshots/LoadingScreens/hydlaa_n03.jpg)
Ojaveda 1 (http://users.tkk.fi/~vrantapu/PlaneShift/Screenshots/LoadingScreens/ojaveda08.jpg)
Ojaveda night 2 (http://users.tkk.fi/~vrantapu/PlaneShift/Screenshots/LoadingScreens/ojaveda10.jpg)
Sewers 1 (http://users.tkk.fi/~vrantapu/PlaneShift/Screenshots/LoadingScreens/sewers03.jpg)
Sewers 2 (http://users.tkk.fi/~vrantapu/PlaneShift/Screenshots/LoadingScreens/sewers_nn01.jpg)
Sewers 3 (http://users.tkk.fi/~vrantapu/PlaneShift/Screenshots/LoadingScreens/sewers_nn02.jpg)

Again, 1024*768 png source files available. All pics were pre-checked with LoaderHunter, they should fit well with the loading screen layout. Some of them are a bit dark, but since that\'s what the in-game areas are like, I didn\'t want to retouch them. The white background of a browser makes a picture seem even darker.

I really like Cherpow\'s dungeon bridge shot.  It says to me \"where the hell is that and how do i get there?\".  I think that\'s what all the screens should \"say\" to the player.

Your spot on there Chris. Screenshots that intrigue people are the key to a successful loading screen ;)

The Competition has now ended.

Thank you all for your entries :) We will be converting them to loading screens in the next couple of days, and we hope to announce any winners before wednesday (+10GMT - Australian time).

Stay Tuned for announcments!

P.S. The webhost that holds my website account where I normally host my pictures has stopped providing free accounts, so any links I made to that website are now dead. Sorry for any inconveniance.

Sorry for the late reply... I was going to wait until I had confirmation of the loading screens being accepted before I posted but its taking longer than I thought.

The loading screens have been made, and are now waiting to be accepted. The winners of the selected screenshots are:

- Cherppow, for the screenshots of the Arena, Hydlaa Plaza, and the Dungeon. http://users.tkk.fi/~vrantapu/PlaneShift/Screenshots/Loading_Arena2.jpg
http://users.tkk.fi/~vrantapu/PlaneShift/Screenshots/Loading_Hydlaa_plaza2.jpg
http://users.tkk.fi/~vrantapu/PlaneShift/Screenshots/LoadingScreens/dungeon02.jpg

- Chriskl, for the screenshot of the Death Realm.

Thank you everyone else who entered in, there were many great screenshots taken, and it was a hard decision choosing the winners.

If the loading screens are accepted then you will see them in an update very soon :)
/me crosses fingers

Hey All,

If you update to the latest version of PlaneShift, you will see the winning screenshots are now in-game as per-region loading screens!

Everyone\'s saying they look great!

Chris
