Currently, it is impossible to cast a offensive spell on a target that is not a monster, and a defensive spell on someone else than oneself. This limitation is so restrictive that it prevent free use of magic, and the reason behind is not obvious...
If I want to help a friend to age slower, I cannot cast freeze on him. Also, if I want to bronze I cannot cast fireball on myself, and neither can I cast a protection spell to save these poor rats bullied by hords of angry newbies !!!
So could this limitation be removed ? We are all equals ! ;)

They should be limited by rule of no free PvP. You may only target another player with offensive spells if he agreed to it. Also i think Defensive Wind can be cast on yourself only because you need to channel the magical energies after the spell is cast, and so only the caster can control the wind around him (my explanation at least)
I wholeheartly agree that you should always be able to target yourself, even with offensive spells.
(off-topic) Defensive Wind should either need no target, or a /target_me command must be implemented. It is a pain to cast currently, especially when you use (like me) only first person mode.

I \'d personally even go further and allow magic spells to be targeted to non-living objects, just as much as players, NPC\'s and monsters.
This could be done by directing the spell to where your crosshair points in first person view. So we get even more interaction with our environment. Also I \'d like to see the effects at least temporarily of for exampe a fireball crashing into a wall: a black charred spot .. or into a tree: burnt leaves and charred trunk. Or if one would cast a freeze spell on a flame it would be extinguished and with a fireball it is relit. Little things like that that make you connect to the gameworld much more.
Of course I understand that there has to be a PK limitation so I suggest that people would have a natural magical reflection about them. So that when an offensive spell is cast against a person or NPC the damage will reflect back to the caster and hurt him/her. When a player accepts a duel this natural defence will disappear. This makes it trickier for mages since now they have to watch where they shoot their fireballs .. if they hit an ally in a heated fight by accident they would be burned.
I think this can be entered into the game atmosphere by making it a part of the nature of magic. Magic would be a powerful force channeled to aid and to harm those that have hostile feelings towards you. It\'s nature doesn\'t allow it to be used against beings who mean you no harm.
