Title: Updater???
Post by: provisionist1 on May 15, 2005, 02:16:46 pm
I know there are updates occuring at the moment, and I know that we mac users in a way dread new updates to the game...

So, does the updater work? ChaOs, does your updater work? I know when we got 3.009 dfryer said don\'t use the updater. Is it fixed yet, or is this set of updates 3.010 and we won\'t be able to play for a while?

I\'m just worried that we won\'t get to play for a while again, anyone have any answers?

That was exactly my reaction to the update announcement: Oh NO!

I have experimented with moving my psclient file out of the directory, updating, then moving it back in.  It worked once, so I stopped messing with it.  I don\'t know where the version information is kept, but I don\'t think it\'s in the executable.

Well, it\'s another good time for me to be away from PS, lots of work right now...

Yeah, I get to play about 3 hours a week when I\'m not busy (but I still have time to troll the forums) but this means FORUMS only for what, a month?

If I know more C++ (I\'m a FORTRAN guy) i would help out.  So, DFryer, if there is some FORTRAN work to be done, I\'m your guy...

My updater should be working fine. The real issue is whether or not the files we need to update exist in the repository...
Title: Yeah?
Post by: provisionist1 on May 16, 2005, 12:44:47 am
Well, if your updater is working, then there is a glimmer of hope... But me being the pessimist, I think the files won\'t be in the repository, they will again need to be coded...

Well, I have exams for the next couple weeks, so yeah, maybe it\'s good timing.

Also, just out of curiosity, isn\'t the coding for the mac usually done in objective C, not C++? Hm, I really don\'t know.

Seems I\'ll have to find something else to keep me from revision... Xirius scans Macintosh Garden... Ooooh, Castles Siege and Conquest, Monkey Island...Loom! Hehehe excellent, classic games.

I\'ll continue to check the forums, see you all ingame in a couple weeks hopefully.

An update? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooo...!

Off topic for a second: I recently got the two abandonware Monkey Island games from the Macintosh Garden. Did you know that ScummVM (http://scummvm.org/) can play Scumm games (like the first two Monkey Islands) in OS X?

Yes. Though if you learn C++, objective C isn\'t that hard to learn (for that matter, if you learn Java, C++ isn\'t that hard to learn and vice versa of course). Also, Planeshift may be an exception of sorts. Ask dfryer for a definitive answer, though.

Apple\'s Cocoa libraries were designed for Objective-C, the Carbon libraries for C/C++ - all three are used, but Planeshift uses all C++.  However, the Crystal Space libraries that it depends on use a mixture of C++ and Objective-C for system interfacey stuff.

And no, I haven\'t uploaded new binaries, still compiling and testing.  It is likely that some of the lighting bugs are still there, I will try and ship with the \"inside glitch\" fixed, though.

Thanks for clearing that up dfryer, I study archaeology, about the farthest subject away from computers, so I had no idea.

Also, thank you very much for working on the new updates, I look forward to the next client with great anticipation...

ok, i am a complete noob and i just downloaded ps today, and i am trying to update it.  but, whenever i try, the program randomly quits, and never gets a chance to do anything.  and its  really annoying. is this what yall mean when the updater never works, cause if it is, then say so and il never bother yall again.

\"whenever i try, the program randomly quits, and never gets a chance to do anythin\" ... \"is this what yall mean when [you say that] the updater never works\"

Brilliant deduction!

And if it did it still wouldn\'t help you, since I haven\'t uploaded new binaries :/

Sorry, slightly off-topic but I couldn\'t see anywhere else reasonable to post. Anyway, looking at the third mirror of the OS X on the PS homepage, it says \"Uploading files\". I\'m curious, cos it\'s been doing that for quite a while. Any reasons, or a dead duck?

#1. Just make a new thread
#2. I\'m assuming that they either A. uploaded the files already and didn\'t change that or B. were going to upload the files but never got around to it. It\'s not that big a deal, though, as there are 2 other working mirrors. Then again, DLing stuff from those mirrors doesn\'t get you anywhere anyway, so it\'s all a moot point, really.

OK, thanks for the advice :D

NP. :)

I\'m hoping the recent post by dfryer indicates forthcoming binaries (i.e. in the next week or so). Yes, no, maybe...? :P

Tested in debug, didn\'t seem to be any worse than previous version, so I\'m recompiling in optimize mode right now.

OSX-specific bug wise, I don\'t think I\'ve made much progress, but y\'all will be able to connect once I get this stuff in place.

You\'ll have to use Cha0s\' updater to get the new files, since the updater you all have is whacked - but when you update, it should get a more working version of the updater.

It should take me a few days, accounting for team-synchronization issues.

so, when dfryer is done with making the stuff, when we DL PS well automatically get chaos\'s updater?
Title: Chaos's Updater
Post by: Felix Yellowhair on May 23, 2005, 07:06:34 pm
Chaos and others who know.  Is Updater.jar, the updater that we should use  once Fryer is done with his updating.    Should the updater that is under Guide to using PS on Mac OS X that is based on using the 006 version
be used to replace the updater that come with the 009 download?

 :D

Updater.jar is what you should use if you\'re updating from an existing version. Once you DL the update, start using the official one.

But where can i find the \"Chaos\'s Updater\" everybody is talking about?

Thanks, g5
Title: stupid question
Post by: Felix Yellowhair on May 26, 2005, 04:59:14 pm
It is a stupid question since you should look in the A Guide to Running Planeshift on Mac OS X.  On the first page is the answer.   DL updater.jar
and use it once dfryer has finished his project.   The updater.jar is Chaos\'s creation.
I hope I have not offended the first timer.  Perhaps it is because I also
been told after  some of my questions that I should look harder.  Certainly doing a search under the terms \"Chaos\" and \"Updater\" will get you to his updater.    One has to be willing to read practically every message under the Mac section if he has a mac user.   And having the Mac platform unavailable allows one to do so.   Also of an newbie, I suggest you joining one of the Guilds since they will talk about things on their site that deal with the game itself.    In these forums we should not discuss game situations.   That should be left for on-line play or in the Guilds.
There are people who will answer that a question is stupid and for one to look harder and not give anything more.   I at least answered the question and pointed out the location of the answer.
However, I think Blackbow33 is correct in admonishing me.   I should just answer the questions without critizing.  I would have just done it if I was online in the Plaza.  Too much trouble and typing to do criticising.

Gee Felix, give the guy a break; it\'s his first post! Running Planeshift on the Mac is not easy; it took me hours to get it working the first time. I\'ve updated once, and now it\'s not working again! We should all help eachother without telling people they\'re asking stupid questions. Geesh.

Any idea of an ETA for 3.10 update. I saw dfryer saying soon, but just curious...

Well, we are all curious and anxious.   I believe DFyer is 3 hours behind my time (EDT) which means he may do much of his work in the wee hours of the night.   Also I think the time given in the Mac section is based on dfryer time zone (Pacific daylight)   It is good that dfryer also has a Mac which he wants to be able to use for PlaneShift.

Actually, most of the trouble is because I\'m as much of a game-addicted slacker as everyone else here.  8o

maybe u should cut dfyer some slack... if it werent him we wouldnt even have \"MacOSX Specific Issues\" topic because there wouldnt be a game for mac and definently no issues.

Tr1skal, my comment was only in reference to him admitting he\'s a slacker :D

I know he\'s technically God right now... and we are all in waiting deliverance. (No, not like the movie)

Heh.. if you wanted to remove my GL card you\'d leave a big hole in my motherboard :/

Current binaries are now in transition between my computer and the updater server, but require the intervention of someone else before they\'re ready for download.

After that\'s done, the Updater of Chaos should be able to grab them.

Now, it\'s entirely possible that stuff will still not work, but if it\'s not a new issue we\'ve probably seen it before (weird dark patches, that sort of stuff)
