As far as I can remember there were only very vague definitions of law in Yliakum. And for some further RP advancement, I would like to know following things:
- How is slavery handled? Is it allowed in the first place?
- Are there any sentences for sleeping on offical ground?
- How are vagabounds and peddlers handled?
- Is there death sentence in Yliakum? How would it look like?
- Does the Yliakean (I hope this is spelt right) Government keep a military force?
- Through who are the acts of justice handled?
- Is there an executive, or does it rely on a bountyhunter system?
Feel free to discuss other terms of Yliakean law/government her to.[/COLOR]

Exactly why do you want to know this? Huh? What\'s up with that?

1. How is slavery handled? Is it allowed in the first place?
I remember seeing some people selling Dwarves or such ingame at one time, long ago - so I would guess yeah, probably legal
2. Are there any sentences for sleeping on offical ground?
hmm, well there probably will be - would look rather stupid if the whole plaza where crawling with sleeping scu... I mean poor guys :P
3. How are vagabounds and peddlers handled?
Either being ignored or hushed (is this a word?) away...
4. Is there death sentence in Yliakum? How would it look like?
I would say no, but hey one never know - and well if there were it would probably be hanging, getting your head chopped off etc.
5. Does the Yliakean (I hope this is spelt right) Government keep a military force?
You didn\'t think those guards in the city were volunteers did you?
6. Through who are the acts of justice handled?
Immediately under an Octarch there are twenty \"Vigesimi\", high civil servants that deal with law and order. <- taken from the Government section from the website :)
7. Is there an executive, or does it rely on a bountyhunter system?
a bounty or being hunted down by the city guards....
These are what I think are the answers...

Then again, the Azure Sun\'s rays supposedly eliminate the need for sleep, so...
EDIT: I\'m sure I read that in the Players\' Guide, but Laanx bite me if I can find it now... ?(
4. Is there death sentence in Yliakum? How would it look like?
I would say no, but hey one never know - and well if there were it would probably be hanging, getting your head chopped off etc.
Interesting idea - one execution for petty theft, five for grand theft, ten for premeditated murder, fifty for high treason...?
-
I\'ve been a little in the dark attempting to roleplay law enforcement considering there are few laws or customs to go on. I wrote a basic law code up on the HLE forums, but it isn\'t official.
-
to Buddha: As I said, for RP reasons, somehow I cant see the real propse of your post, but I wont complain. I thought it is this subforums propose to be a discussion forum
to Mr.Dave: I really dont think that the Azure Sun\'s rays can eliminate the need for sleep, but anyways my character comes from another realm and so the rays propably wont have their full effect on him.
Well not sleeping in the plaza, but sleeping in some sidestreets, between houses and so.

No idea, it does make night and day as in RL - so I don\'t see why it should eliminate need for sleep... unless the settings says it does :S

if you can find these different ways, then just go ahead ;)

# How is slavery handled? Is it allowed in the first place?
Well I think there are regional differences, where Hydlaa as a civilized city has shown no signs of slavery, I \'ve seen many Enki\'s working around the clock over at Akkaio. I \'m not sure if slavery is legally accepted or not but it does seem to happen in the less populated and advanced areas.
# Are there any sentences for sleeping on offical ground?
If you can sleep in the middle of Hydlaa plaza with those constant \"players\" running around clanging their weapons .. I \'d let you sleep even if it was forbidden by law. Personally I prefer a nice soft bed over at Kada-El\'s tavern though. Or bunk out in one of the hammocks of the tent encampment of Akkaio
# How are vagabounds and peddlers handled?
They seem to be ignored by most .. I haven\'t seen any action taken against them.
# Is there death sentence in Yliakum? How would it look like?
I don\'t think a death sentence would work since one \'d simply go to the Death Realm and pop back up moments later. So I believe that penalties in the form of fees or prison time would be much more effective.
# Does the Yliakean (I hope this is spelt right) Government keep a military force?
At the moment we don\'t even have an Octarch, half of the population is sick and suffers from amnesia. Monsters are infected by an illness called \"bugs\" and there is a plague spreading through Yliakum. So I don\'t think there is an organized military force available to enforce the law at this time. Though I have heard of Town Militia\'s being assembled by normal people who want to uphold the law around Hydlaa.
# Through who are the acts of justice handled?
The regional police forces seem to be overthrown by corruption and chaos, rendering them ineffective so at the moment only a handful of Guilds attempt to uphold the law.
# Is there an executive, or does it rely on a bountyhunter system?
Bountyhunters would be an interesting job but there still has to be someone to put the prices on their heads and pay them out. *ponders this* perhaps some of the more wealthy guilds could take care of that.

Crucifixion, boiling in oil, drawing and quartering, impalement, beheading, burning alive, crushing, tearing asunder, stoning, and drowning... enough or do you want more?
-
You forgot lapidating.
-
It amazes me that you guys don\'t even bother reading the little information there is on the website.
Pollution of the water is the only crime in Yliakum which carries the penalty of death - permanent death, that is - simply because the Nolthrir live in the water, and they make their seaweed in it. Of course, some other extreme cases gives the death penalty too, such as being a very bad octarch.

Nono - I meant \"execute the perp once for petty theft, five times for grand theft etc. etc.\" \'Cause, unles you do something really extreme, your executee is gonna find his way back to the Life Realm eventually.
Sudden thought - could banishment to the Death Realm be the sentence for some crimes?

We must not confuse the DR with the nice, albeit dark, place that is implemented right now. Just like with the other levels, the DR is already there, in full scary beauty. So while the DR itself seems to be part of the setting, the absence of the other levels and the meager size and happyness of the DR are not. Therefore, it would suffice, for RP reasons, to just send someone to the DR once (but make sure they don\'t have anything with them to bribe the death entity :) ). I expect at least an RL day for getting out of the DR in the end, even if one knows one\'s way around it.
Obviously, sending someone into the crystal will be permanently killing one, as the settings says. :)
So I see we have one more option than IRL:
1) fines
2) prison time
3) DR time
4) permanent death
As for vagabonds: being medieval, there is almost no way of even spotting them, so unless they are on the plaza or the major trade routes, nothing would be done to them. They\'d probably, just as with sleeping, ushered away off areas with at least medium standards, but not in the back alleys and other, less bright, places.
Furthermore, almost all travellers would have to be considered vagabonds, since the distinction is quite unclear. Travelling from level one to level 6/7 will take loads of time if you don\'t have a pterosaur, so you\'ll be vagabond for some months: camping besides the road, hunting in the wild, whatever.
Therefore I don\'t see any way to punish that. Persistent loiterers (near the temple, or in the plaza) could face up to a week of prison time, though.
