Title: Linux installer ready for tests.
Post by: Platyna on May 21, 2005, 09:46:55 pm
It is available at http://planeshift.xpam.de/ anyway that mirror is
overloaded so may be slow, if you will have problems with download wait till
it will be available on other mirrors too. There is also an update available, for
those who has art from older relases of CB, at the site above.
It is a test relase, so if you will have any problems read:
Known/common problems with the Linux Installer (http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=16799&boardid=41&styleid=2)
and:
How to report problems with the Linux Installer (http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=16711&boardid=41&styleid=2).

Good luck!

Great, thanks Platyna :D
And may I suggest DHT based BitTorrent (http://azureus.sf.net/) to remove the pressure on the server?

It should be in all mirrors soon. I am not familiar with BT thing, so if someone
wishes to make it then feel free. I am now working on improving the build since
some people are reporting me weird segfaults. :(

Thank you very much platyna.

Is there anyone who downloaded the game and is willing to put up a torrent?

I just stopped downloading because, if enough people stop, maybe someone will be able to download it sooner than six days (It will take 6 days at 520B/s).

Post by: EsRyn on May 22, 2005, 02:13:15 am
I am not downloading either.  One thought though, if you do put out the bittorrent, make sure to call it test or something?  Revisions later need a different name, too, liike test2 test3.  That way when the official one is done, it won\'t have different bittorrents with the name in it... and we know we got the right version.

Post by: DaBlade on May 22, 2005, 02:55:03 am
I\'ve got a lot of BitTorrent experience, and I can seed a torrent, but first I need the file. Can anyone use http://www.yousendit.com to send it to me? When I get it, I\'ll seed it and give you guys the info needed to download it here.
Send to dablade at gmail dot com
Title:
Post by: lobule on May 22, 2005, 03:00:31 am
Yeah, actually, platanya, if you upload it to yousendit (or if anyone else does) it would be a much faster download. Yousendit only allows 25 downloads per file, but then I would reupload it and hopefully others would, too.

So then we could have the yousendit, bittorrent from dablade and hopefully the rest of the planeshift mirrors to download from.

Rest of the mirrors will have it soon. On this mirror there will be no BT since
PS is already consuming 50 mbit - there is a download mirror for Mac and
Windoze client as well and network load is, as you can see quite huge.
If anyone wants to share the file on BT - feel free, I bet all Linux users and PS
Team will be grateful for help. Anyway file will be available on other mirrors as
fast as I will contact Talad. BTW, if you are downloading the file now you have
to redownload it - I had to change it.

Regards.
Title:
Post by: DaBlade on May 22, 2005, 12:30:00 pm
I can set up a torrent, but I\'ll need the original file first. When do you expect the mirrors to have it?
Title:
Post by: EsRyn on May 22, 2005, 03:34:18 pm
Platyna: It should be in all mirrors soon.

This sounds kind of confusing hon.  I think what we want, is this particular test file out, not the installer final version.  It sounds like we all are talking about two different subjects.  It would be nice for the final version to be on mirrors, and Bittorrent too, but I think they were talking about this version, the test run.

Iobule: sooner than six days (It will take 6 days at 520B/s).

I get that download speed too Platyna.  The point is, no one will post comments or be able to have an entire file to upload for testing to bittorrent, sooner than 6 days.  I confirmed the math, it really will take us that long to download it.  I think we will get people to test it before that if you cut off all downloads, then post it to a third party site like suggested, or contact one single person to bittorrent it, then post the bittorrent.  You could still host the bittorrent file itself, but wouldnt have the bandwidth issue of uploading the entire thing.  A bittorrent file to start a download is only 18kb, while this file is 276Mb, too.  The load of uploading it would be shared by whomever first downloaded it, and then the rest of us as it continues.  I would certainly be willing to seed it for a while once someone gets a bittorrent file made.  As it is, no one will get the file to test before next week.

Not trying to be rude hon, just trying to make the issue clearer.  We really do want to help test it.
Title:
Post by: Platyna on May 22, 2005, 03:47:30 pm
To be strict - there will be never a final version of the Linux Installer. There is
work on PS going all the time. So since the CVS repository is made public I am
testing it and if I will get a better results or some major bug fixes I will surely
change the installer unless the admins will have the other opinion about it.

Regards.
Title:
Post by: AndyAWS on May 22, 2005, 04:24:49 pm
I think the point EsRyn is trying to make is that at the current download rate it will take anyone 6 days of constant downloading to even try it. If I start downloading it now, by the time i get it installed it will most likely be out of date...
Title: Difference meaning :Update -- Full package
Post by: x_maus on May 22, 2005, 05:04:34 pm
Sorry for looking a little bit astonished.
But what is the reason for an updater if you need to download the full package of about 250 MB?.
It is true i have DSL, but really.
Any reason, why the package can be split e.g. in art, which remains probably lionger stable and some dynamic part, which can be upgraded easier ?

Bye the way, that the Linux version is not available yet is a pitty. Hope this get fixed soon.
Kind Regards

Post by: Platyna on May 22, 2005, 05:19:05 pm
I am actually considering it, but since these are official files I have to consult
things with the project admins, and they are usually busy people. We need a
full relase as well, I made it, if it will work correctly we will think about options.
And why you are complaining that there are no Linux version out if you are
posting in a thread entitled \"Linux installer ready...\". It is ready, it is complete,
you may install it, if it will work - great, if not, we will try to find a reason
toghether, since Planeshift is in a development state everything may happen.
Some people are organizing Torrent stuff, it should be available as on Laanx,
as far as I know from Talad - the admin of Planeshift. So, less complaints more
patience. Remember it is a free project, I got no cookies for making the
installer except seeing a happy Linux people if it will work.

Regards.

Well, at least some appreciation. Anyway I made the update, ONLY for those
who already has the art. It has 36 megs and will be available from the official
mirrors soon, I will post other download links when it will happen.

Thank you for releasing this update so soon. Sorry if I seemed ungratefull.

I really appreciate the work you have done for us.

About the smaller update, can we use the art from the windows version with it?

Post by: DaBlade on May 22, 2005, 07:32:36 pm
Okay, I\'ve gotten the torrent file up. If you don\'t know how to use BitTorrent, all you do is start the client, open the .torrent file and it\'ll download. Please let it keep seeding(uploading to others) when it\'s done downloading because I have very slow upload bandwidth, and I often get disconnected (crap ISP). Please have at least a 1:1 share ratio.
If you need a bittorrent client, I recommend Azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/). It requires Java, and is sometimes a little hard for beginners to understand, but it\'s got an easy configuration wizard that appears first time you run it.

The torrent file is available here. (http://www.rokanova.com/index.php?idx=details&id=245411ac00e3b2039c7974924a5fa27e17a9d6c2)
PLEASE keep seeding it when you\'re done, so others can get the file, and so that their download speed will be quicker. I can\'t seed this alone forever. Besides, the tracker that I used bans people without at least a 1:1 share ratio, so if you abort it after downloading, you won\'t be able to download it again if you need to.

Enjoy. :)

i\'ll seed after i\'ll download!
Title:
Post by: DaBlade on May 22, 2005, 08:07:21 pm
Okay good. Thanks for that. :)
Right now I got 8 people downloading it, and it\'s going pretty slowly for each of them. Azureus is a fair program so each has about 5% now. Remember that once at least one full copy is out, and that person starts seeding, the speed will boost. I suggest waiting a little while before starting to download because that way you will most likely get better speeds. And to understand how BitTorrent works, look on
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent
Title:

I\'ll be seeding with my 80kB/s upload rate for a good day once I finish the file.

Thanks for the torrent DaBlade.
Title:
Post by: DaBlade on May 22, 2005, 08:19:38 pm
Thanks a lot for that.
I\'ve monitored the uploads, and it seems that I only have to upload to two users, and they all spread the pieces amongst each other. I love BitTorrent  :D  :D
Everyone has around 8% now.

@The thanks: Don\'t mention it.  :))

Post by: DaBlade on May 22, 2005, 09:12:30 pm
There is a peer in the swarm with an unknown client, he/she\'s not getting anything at all. That means that the tracker banned him/her. If you aren\'t getting anything at all, and you\'re reading this, please get a verified client like Azureus (http://azureus.sf.net/).
Title:
Post by: EsRyn on May 22, 2005, 09:45:25 pm
May i please suggest, that whomever is the client with the 100% seed, would you please switch it to super seed mode? Just until there are at least 2 or 3 full seeds out there.  Then everyone can use normal seeding, and it should be fine.  Until more than just one person has an entire seed though, we still will have a very slow download.
Title:
Post by: DaBlade on May 22, 2005, 09:57:22 pm
I\'m the 100% seeder. I\'m giving the swarm 90% of my bandwidth (if I gave 100%, I wouldn\'t be able to IM, browse the web or anything). Super seeding mode wouldn\'t change anything at all. It would still go pretty much just as slowly.
Title:
Post by: EsRyn on May 22, 2005, 10:06:31 pm
no hon not the swarm, change modes.  doesnt have anything to do with bandwidth.  it is in preferences.

Tools->Options
in the tab that opens, look toward the bottom for
Queue-> Seeding
then you check the box that says
Use Super Seeding

You dont want to use that after a few more seeds are full, but at first is very essential.  It won\'t use up more bandwidth, will just block the rest of us and concentrate on one or two fast uploads.  Those people that end up getting the seeds, they need to keep it up for the rest of us, and we will get it from them faster.  After they are done getting theirs, you uncheck the super seeding box, and go back to seeding.

The installer is on one of the mirrors:
http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/planeshift/

Also, I\'m now seeding on the torrent dablade created.

The mirror was giving me between 200 and 300 KB/s, I\'m doing between 80 and 100 KB/s total upload.

So downloads should be faster now.

Edit: Sorry, I kept getting NAT errors, so I\'m not uploading on BT.
Title:
Post by: tron on May 23, 2005, 01:37:03 am
Good idea.  I am downloading from that mirror at 350 KB/s, and will start seeding the torrent with it as well (in about 4 minutes).

Normally you can\'t beat BT, but when there\'s only 1 seed, it don\'t go so fast.... Fortunately there should be several seeds soon.  Keep seeding people!
Title:
Post by: lobule on May 23, 2005, 02:57:27 am
Umm, guys, apparently my download from the mirror was bad. (I redownloaded and the file is good now).

Yes, I did share it on BT. Sorry if I cuase anyone else any problems.

So if you have problems with extraction when you run the installer, it\'s just the file, and you should redownload.

./setup.sh: line 113: dialog: command not found

or is that something else?

EDIT: P.S. DaBlade I adblocked the image in your sig. >.> annoying when you try to read a page of comments

Also, my bawx locked up while I was seeding. I WOULD seed more.. but well... OMGBANNED now ;)

EDIT2: Well obviously I installed the \"dialog\" package now, let\'s see what happens
Title:
Post by: malevolent on May 23, 2005, 01:49:41 pm
seeding at the moment to the two users that remains....
my upload is not very good but i\'ll last seeding until both of them will be done :D

BT is a very good alternative to mirrors, faster to set up, free of charges and it frees a lot of bandwith from mirrors....

maybe always linux users can we donwload the client via BT instead wainting for a updater or a space for the linux client at the mirrors.

Really good idea.

Pity that i yet  cannot test this client cause im at university preparing an exam, but tonight i\'ll test for sure!

Linforcer: You need the dialog utility installed, it is usually in a base dir or any
Linux distro, since important programs like netconfig use it. Weird that you
have not installed it.

Anyway glad to see you, people, are helping each other in distribution of the
Planeshift installer. Keep the good work!

Not only was dialog not installed, it wasn\'t even in the default sources :O

Ok, well I didn\'t save the strace to a file I just took it from the console. I have 2 kinds.

1:
Happens sometimes (also happens when built from source)
Client exits after showing the first loaing screen and hearing a second of sound
strace output: http://pastebin.com/288722

2:
Happens whenever I try to join the game
Client exits when done loading the area

I have problem n?1 and can\'t found a lot of things about this message on the forum except that it might impact performances. But I don\'t really care about performances now... it doesn\'t launch at all. :(

./updater is working fine except the mouse cursor is extremely slow and it says to me \"no update\", which I find rather normal.
./ pssetup is working fine (I read the \"cannot save\" message on exit is meaningless)
./eedit is showing me the worksmith house correctly and I can move in this world, so my engine is working fine.
./psclient is exiting after 1 sec :(

As others above i get error 1; can\'t figure why, but running PS with:

psclient -verbose

just works for me. Maybe some timeout somewhere?

Another problem with install script: when asked for install path, when i press / (slash) the dialog exits (i\'ve IT kbd layout). I had to untar the package myself (im so lazy)

If you have problems with the installer or client itself make a separate thread
on this forum.

If you are encountering client crashes this is the thing which may help:
Run the updater and remove the file art/effects/flame01.tga.
I got a reports from the numerous Linux client users that it helps so the crash
is probably caused by that corrupted texture.

Regards.

Worked for me. I both removed this texture and updated planeshift (which updated one file).
