Title: Gentar's Armor Thread
Post by: Gentar on June 16, 2005, 12:54:37 am
heres some armor for a few races I did the first two are for ylians and the last is for an enidukai

Also if anyone wants to take a stab at modeling them, you\'d be my new best friend :)

by the way please tell me what you think. As far as i can tell there haven\'t been to many if any armor designs so I\'d like to know how you feel about them. I tried to make them as original and well suited towards planeshift as possible.

I\'m in love with your armors man! But please edit instead of double posting next time.

The first pic eems out of proportion though. The tops to small for the bottem...

Great stuff.  Could you not do it on lined paper next time though?  Also, try to stay away from side profiles.  For concept work, as well as general art work, poses are more helpful and interesting, respectively.  I really like the fact that your armor is realistic as well as cool looking.  Fantastic work.  Please keep it up.

I like it. :)

The first one reminds me of Lord of the Rings and the others remind me of a game I used to play....

Good times. :P

Kicking ass :) I love it all.

I don\'t suppose you could try some light klyros armour? Something that would protect, but allow a lot of freedom of movement. :D

Its finally here!!!!!!!

The new Klyros armor

The armor is constructed of hardened leather, for good protection but light weight. In order for greater movement, the shoulder guards are off. The knee pads were sculpted to resemble the head of an ubernaut, a symbol of great strength. The helmet comes apart into two peices so it can hit around the fin on the Klyros\'s head

Tell me what you think!!! I personally think this is one of the better works I\'ve contributed.

*Wishes he could walk around ingame in that.*

Now if I had any courage and any talent I would try modelling that armor.  It\'s really well drawn.
Sadly I lack both.

Wow! 8o

Nice work Gentar.

Your draws are gorgeous.

Next step is take one of this concepts and develop as much as you can, make 3 general views of the complete armature with and without the body, and more detailed 3 views of individuals pieces.

Maybe some 3d artist get inspired and bring your sketches to life.

Later you can try some colors, i\'m sure that will be impresive see your work in full colours.

Sorry my bad english.

I just got to thinking, what does a kran do for armor???
I was thinking maybe just some wrapping or padding to prevent his rock like exterior from chipping away. I,d like to hear your suggestions especcially those of the devs, since they probably have something in mind already. Maybe they dont wear any armor at all but thats unlikely.
Title:
Post by: Mobius on June 20, 2005, 03:57:32 am
Anything would be nice, I\'m getting tired of running around naked all day. :P

I was thinking, since the Kran are already separated from the other races being the only non-carbon based lifeform in the game and they\'re made of stone, what if instead of wearing clothing like all the fleshies wear, they just bolted slabs of iron or steel plating onto themselves?

Heres my first attempt at texturing! its not very good but it was just practice. later ill try and add a place to download it.

its kind of a woodsman look. i think ill add a water pouch or satchel on his strap and try to make the middle part of the arm actual skin later on

heres some heavy dermorian battle armor. Ill do the ynwnn\'s next just for you Platyna ;). amd yeah i do need to stop hosting my images from geocities but yo\'ll have to give me some time

the armor flows and is very organic. this is reflective on the dermorians respect for nature.

here is an update to my texture.

As you can see, ive moved the knife into a better, more secure location where the crossbar loops over the strap. i also added some leather etching into those cuff things but its hard to see in the shots. I made the arms bareskin with short sleeves now, which looks way better if you ask me and on the back i added a button to hod the strap to the belt. and last of all i darkened the beard (forgetting to darken the rest of the hair but it still looks pretty good.)

can someone PM me how to make the texture files available for download.

maybe someone wants them for a change of pace.

and remember to check back tonight (maybe tomorrow if i run out of time) on the ynwnn armor that should be done.

sorry for the long wait guys, and also for the fact that this ones not a female ynwnn. I did a few for her but didnt like them so ill have to do it later.

but for now....a Kran. I guess this ones on the darker end of the spectrum but ill create another with a more open face helm like the little sketch to the top left. I got a little lazy, on this as you can see the lack of detail.

So another excellent piece of work from Gentar, the master armourer!

You might think of doing some digital coloring.  If you could get your hands on a wacom that would be ideal.

In leu of digital coloring, this is excellent.  Keep up the awesome work.

If you want someone to make these into 3d models for ingame, it would really help if you would draw each piece of armor in top , right and front perspectives so your images can be used as refference. That would also ensure that the model would actually look like the drawings you imagine, cause making a model without refference is always resulted totally different from what you intended, talking from 1st hand experience :P . These are really nice scetches, and you got sense of style, although I doubt some of those pieces od armor can be done keping face count low and looking nice because of their many parts/plates.

Post by: Gentar on July 20, 2005, 11:31:21 pm
Try to ignore the fact that i even did the last kran armor and feast your eyes upon this. its basically the same idea, just a better drawing. still not great but hey...its just concept art. theres something up with those legs,m so i might fix them sometime.

Archane Falcon, your going to have to give me time on the other stuff, cause its not on the top of my priority list.

Just because we\'re a little on the soft jelly side don?t mean we can?t have a few mean shoulder plates and big spiky boots!

Everyone always forgets the lemurs...

You know there are lemur warriors, there not as buff as dwarfs or agile as elves, but they use their head and strategically outmatch there opponent! Har har har, those were the days...

I\'ve thought maybe you could draw a elf ranger, the armour could be like hard leather and light plate mix with chainmail and scale bits, i\'d really like to see what it would look like also with a nice bow showing, i\'d be very thankful if you did as your other drawing are awesome

actually i have an archer ynwnn coming if you dont mind. I,ll try to incorporate some of your ideas however. Dont expect it too soon though, because i have a few other things to finish first.

Priority List:
*A Zoologist Kran
*The Multi drawing diagram for the 3D model
*The Archer Ynwnn
* WAR BLIMPS!!! (this might actually come first)

here is a texture I had done for the ylian male. Its a rough studded leather armor. You may have seen this in my texture thread, however that one is an older, crappier version. I redid it after i realized how much better it could look when Arcane Falcon enlightened me so here it is. (this is not the one arcane falcon made, although it looks similar.)

I will post the ingame image later.
Title:
Post by: ArcaneFalcon on September 27, 2005, 09:44:34 pm
I think it looks better than before, but it could still use some tweaking methinks.  Take a look at my second post in this (http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=19374&boardid=22&styleid=3) thread for some links to references and some tutorials on creating more convincing textures.

Could you be a bit more specific? What exactly would you do to it now? Exact ideas would help me out alot since im out of them.

I guess ill just add more ware and tare.
Title:
Post by: ArcaneFalcon on September 28, 2005, 04:02:14 am
Ok...well..the first key is to have good reference.  If you ever look at a tutorial done by a professional they usually include a reference file with their tutorial, and more often than not it is packed with tons of pictures (more than just the orthogs).  Painting a texture is sooo much easier when you have something real to compare it to.  Look at all the fine details in the real one and try to simulate it as good as you can.  Put nicks and scratches on it (try a 1 or 3 px dodge/burn at 5-25%, or a new layer with 1 or 3 px black/white at 50-100% and maybe some blending modes (very small bevel)).  Get some grunge brushes (just google it, you can find thousands) and just dirty up the surface.  Run a grunge brush with with a light color along corners facing out, and a smooth brush with a dark color along dorners facing in.  It\'s just a matter of looking at what you want to make, starting general, and adding more and more detail, whatever you see in your reference that you haven\'t put in your texture.  It take time, a lot of time, but the results are usually worth it.  Just do some practice and if you need I, or preferably someone better than I, can give you some pointers.  I\'ll try to post something a little less vague later...

/me starts to draw armor for various small furry woodland creatures :P perhaps including lemurs! :D
Title:
Post by: Gentar on September 28, 2005, 04:27:16 pm
Thanks a bunch arcane, that helped me out. Sadly I made up this armor from scratch so i have no reference, but im still adding detail. I found a picture of a piece of leather that had a gash in it, so i put a few of those on it (of course they all vary in size and proportion). I will try the scratches you were talking about. Is dodge/burn a brush setting or do i just paint in black on a layer and change the blend mode to color dodge or burn?
Title:
Post by: Gentar on September 29, 2005, 08:02:19 pm
okay, I did a bit more on the texture. Made it look a bit more worn and grimy, notice the gash on the back along with the grunge on the leather. I also added some scratches using the technique arcane falcon reccomended. THe buttons and belt buckle are now tarnished as well.

you can see the evolution of its development as my skills and instruction have hopefully improved.

Title:
Post by: ArcaneFalcon on September 29, 2005, 11:28:13 pm
Gentar: References are more than just exact duplicates of whatever you\'re making.  They include things like pictures of worn leather, pictures of tarnished metal buttons, pictures of different belts, etc.  Get some.  Use them.  Also, turn down the opacity on your worn leathury texture layers just a little bit, they\'re a bit too strong methinks.  They are, however, worlds better than the first.  Keep it up.

hi,

 nice concepts.

I was just thinking about kran armor earlier today as i was drawing up a kran my self.. nice solution for the kran armor.. i had just assumed them being more rock like that they would not wear armor.. but would like to hear more discussion on this.. you did a good job on a difficult race to armor..

BTW i am new to plane shift  and think that its a great game. I am glad it has alot of community input and involvement.

I know what the purpose of armor for a Kran is: he would wear special alloys and stones such as adamant and mythril that actually provide MORE protection than his rocky hide already does. There, problem solved. Though, with the leather beggining armor, he\'d probably use it to just keep his body from chipping, yeah. Anyways, great stuff! I love it!

Its a very simple model, but the texture makes it look good.

Im kinda hooked to this new modeling thing. I know pretty much nothing about how to do it. Im still using the knowledge i gained from cherpows hat tutorial. However I did accomplish what I had set out to do which was to create a simple weapon model. Here it is.

Your models and textures are superb :) Big big big thumbs up on those. But I would really love to see you clean up your sketches sometime and either try strong inks or color, or do something really heavy with graphite with a lot of contrast (natural contrast, not tweaked in photoshop). Basically, less sketch and more drawing ;) Another suggestion is to make some sort of line to imply a surface below the character, some sort of ground. A floating body can work only in special circumstances, and I find that mainly those with a ton of experience and pro skill manage to pull it off. Though when they have that, they tend to avoid floating characters entirely ;D It\'s okay, I\'m guilty of suspending my chars in space too. But a hint of shadow below a body can do tons to an image. Your armor itself is astounding, but some of it gets lost in the sketchy quality of the images - this is why cleaning up may be so important, as armor tends to have a lot of detail that will really shine through if strong strokes are brought forth instead of scribble-lines (though those can be a ton of fun to experiment with).

I wonder how you start drawing - do you go immediately to contour lines, or do you try to make some sort of base first, working with geometric shapes and trying to get the feel for the bulk of the persona you\'re creating? I greatly encourage the latter. And as always, study of anatomy helps both beginners and pros alike, and people like us who kind of get stuck in the middle ;)

And of course, my favorite image:

Hmmm... It MAY look better with the darker lines and stuff... But i sorta like the sketchy quality sometimes... Don\'t know why, I just do... BTW, that is definitely my favorite one too...

Actually I have probably the wierdest, most un-proffesional way of starting a drawing. I tend to make a helmet, and build everything off of that. I make my ideas as I go along. I will do a sort of gestural drawing of the limbs so I can get the right lengths and stuff. I never really learned to draw. Im still in highschool, and I just always kind of could. Im actually going to the Savannah college of art and design next year and going to major in interactive design and game development, so hopefully both my art skills and game developing skills will actually be at a level where I can really contribute to PS.

Thanks Karyuu for the tips! You are way more of a pro than I am obviously, so ill definitely keep them in mind. also thx for deleting the akward nudey post.
Title: concept rendered:
Post by: Dunadurium on January 03, 2006, 04:22:47 am
Hey,
I like your concept art here, it is pretty imaginative and creative, which is what i like about it.
The person, who critiqued you about putting shading in and shadows under the characters I think, while constructive in his reply, is incorrect because while it would improve the actual artwork, as concept art it is unnecessary. All you need is the defined lines and clarity as what is present already
I think that your new stuff also shows a lot of improvement. Just remember to keep them original (which they are) because that makes a fun time modeling :D.

So yeah i did this helm off your first posted pic. It was very fun modeling it:

PS: i made my own thread so i wouldnt be hogging Gentar\'s (as requested by Karyuu) :D http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=21378&boardid=22&styleid=3&sid=7b95c537d0c11298f955769618ae9972

I had seen it. I have to say that you would have more luck at armor design if you were to study the human body a bit more. Anatomy is important, when designing armor that looks good and functional. It is necessary to see how armor must fit against the human form and also how it must be designed to alow movement. I always think about the ways I would like to be able to move in combat and then design my armor to where it allows for those freedoms.

That is not bad for a first try, but next time try lightly sketching out an accurate body shape very lightly. Use yor own body or photos as reference. Then try to draw the armor to fit on to the figure youve drawn. Dont hesitate to make things look fancy and original as well.

I know Ive been nonexistent for a while both in the forum and development world, but both the school year and rowing season are finalizing and I should be back in business. On top of that I got a brand new high powered computer, and Im learning maya in school. So look forward to some good things in the future. Meanwhile here is another armor concept I did with some spare time. I should have been texturing :(

You're starting well, good use of textures.

The graphite i've worked with have been nothing like pencils. Just a rod of graphite :\ I enjoyed using them last time I tested one.

Somehow ive managed to ignore this thread for quite a while......
Must be a punishment from god or something cause Gentar your scetches are plain realisticaly awesome.Still they could use a bit more refined crudeness maybe try a bit more active positions for you characters.Right now they kinda remind me of murals.
Still there was only one thing that buged me in one of your paintings. The one with the mage, well the hand holding the staff  was kindof angular.Well anyways all i can say is keep it up.
Youve deifinetly got the skill and patience to be a great artist.

Closer to photorealism. 3d perspectives done.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I mainly stick to uninteresting poses because I am trying to create designs rather than scenes. Oningo, most of the work on this thread is very old; the models were done as an experiment and i wasnt trying to build anything impressive, But I am a member of the PS team in the 2d department, doing textures. Although its been a while

I reposted this image because this version is scanned vs photographed and is more accurate to the original (there is no reflection off of the graphite)

This is quick sketch I did, more of a character study than anything. I usually post time consuming detailed drawings that never turn out as well as id like them to. I almost like this simple drawing better.

you clearly show improvement from the first drawings. i liked it when i started seeing 3d models, you wanna do it right, do it yourself :D
impressive work, the last images show what you haven't showed before: depth. study more anatomy and perspective, and try to pose your characters in different situations. ever tried to model more organic things, other than metal plates and shapes ?
last question, how old are you ?
keep it up and show us more.
