Title: About ingame chat.
Post by: ragglare on June 20, 2005, 04:28:56 am
I have been told that this game is suposed to be mostly roleplaying.
That\'s good, i wanna roleplay.
But. And it\'s a big BUT.
The thing is that i\'m from Sweden, readed simple English in school and that was 16years ago.
People talk to me ingame, wait a few sec, then walk away thinking i\'m rude for not answer.
I TRY. It just take some time to make a answer ppl can understand.
My main lang is swedish and my granmar is totaly different from the english granmar.

I have met other players saying same thing.
If you not native english speaker it\'s sometime hard to play.
I try to turn against the one that talk to me, just for chowing that i have heard (read) them, but they walk away anyway.

So please. Give us a few moment\'s for the answer.

Well, personally, I\'m fairly generous with waiting, but I\'m not so sure about others.
I think that sometimes people need to understand that others may have difficulty with writing in english.

As a suggestion, perhaps you could type something like a greeting, or somesuch.
And then casually mention OOC that you have difficulty with english, it not being your native language.

Hope that help :)

Hi ragglare :)

I have a suggestion for you:

Ingame, you can create your own shortcut buttons. There is a bar of buttons on the left of your screen, with things written like \"Attack\" \"Stop\" \"Trade\" \"Greet\", etc.

If you right-click in one of the buttons, you can give it a custom name and type out a sentence such as:

/say [OOC: Please give me some moments to reply. I am not native English speaker and it can be slow for me to type a response. Thank you!]

Now whenever you click this button, your character will say the sentence. Then you can take your time to speak.

Hope this helps! :)

Except that the grammar between swedish and english is not that different (:-D), the suggestions given above are extremely useful.

Another trick for not make people run away, is to greet them with the /greet command (or in the shortcut), or simply write a short sentence like hi, or nice to meet that you can even place in the shortcut buttons for making it even faster.

People who want to make RPG are patient, the others are not so devoted to the matter ;-)

Thank you all.
Gonna try that chortcut thing.
I have missed that i can put a /say message in chortcut.  8o

And AryHann

Not the order to put the words no. I agree.
But the way you spell and talk out the words is real different.
A easy word like \"come\" sound\'s exatly like the swedish word \"kam\".
I have made that misstake and write \"kam wid me\" and the answer was \"what???\".
There is a lot more examples, but i think that one cover my point\'s.  :P

By the way, i newer gonna start with \"AOL chat\" even if it\'s faster. It\'s uggly with number\'s anstead of word\'s.

And thank\'s again for the tipp\'s.

S?, ta din tid och t?nk \"Jag ?r iaf inte v?rst\" :)

OOC: Fan vilket v?der vi har! :P

Translation: Whatever, just told him to calmn down and he won\'t speak worse than the french players :P

Skulle f?rst?tt det.

Allt fr?n Japanska animeforum till ett alfa av ett mmorpg.
Ja ja. Jag k?mpar p? i allafall. Har gjort en genv?g nu, s? f?r jag se hur den funkar.

#translation try:

 :D
I should have understud it.
I seen\'s to meet swedish everyware on the net.
Everything from Japanese animeforum to a alfa of a mmorpg.
Yes yes (that sound strange). I keep trying anyway. Have done a chort-cut now, so lets see how it work.

By the way. I gonna love to see how the game is gonna grow. think it have the possibles to be one off the best mmorpg on the net.

If your text is OOC, it might be a good idea to put parentheses ( ) or brackets [ ], { } around it ;)

Svenskar ?r f?r ?vrigt k?nda f?r att snacka bra engelska ;)

Translation:  Myself, I\'m using a digital swedish/english dictionary to look up words I don\'t understand or can\'t spell, which works excellent. Can be a bit tough after a while, but what the hell. 8)

Besides, swedes are known for speaking good english ;)

Well, when you typed that post on the forums, I could understand perfectly well so I don\'t think you have a problem.

It\'s good to hear.
But it\'s different to post on the forum and talk in the game.
Here i have all the time i need, and i can go back for correcting my writing.
When i talk in the game i\'m start to feel unsecure when people start to walk away.
That make me write even slower and more wrong.
I don\'t blame anyone. That\'s my problem to work with.
I think i\'m gonna be better and faster bit for bit.
But for now i\'m a slow writer and made this tread only to tell, and ask for some patient.

Hmm. I have thinked a lot after i started this tread.
And what i was thinking about is: Do the inpatient people ingame have time to read on the forum???

Ohh and Jadd. A dictionary don\'t work to good when i playing. It make me even more slow. :P

EDIT* I have made me a chort-cut and have put [] around it.

That\'s totally true  , that always seems to be the case.
Anyways, sorry ragglare that people can be rude, I speak English as my native language and people walk away from me before I have time to resppond :P !  Possibly it\'s because I\'m so long-winded though...

I had problems with spelling too in the begining (2 years ago), just look for posts by Commando, my old account.
When I begun to talk with the fans on IRC (Chatish) My english slowly grew better and I now feel quite confident with most words and grammar :) (Except for mornings :P)

I\'m start to get a feeling that i\'m not alone.
And...Well...Hmm... I get a lot of training when i play.
For some strange, unknown reason a lot of other newbees asking me for help, whenever i am at the plaza.
And that made think about another thing (not good, too much thinking).
Why don\'t people look in the forum, or at least the playguide before they start playing???

90% off the newplayer\'s talk to me is like this:
new> hi. can you help me please?
me> I can try. What do you need help with?
new> I have just started playing and i don\'t know what to do.
me> You need too hunt rat\'s for to get some tria\'s.
new> Where can i buy a wapon? (we stand next to the smith)
me> Here. But you must gain you some trias first.
new> How can i kill rat\'s without wapon?
me> You have to fist fight.
new> Where is the rat\'s?
me> They....
((thinking) huh???)
me> /me nock on his pointy head. He is gone???
((thinking) where did he go? aha. asking next player. And the same question\'s. )

I know it\'s a bit offtopic (or is it?).
But becaurse it\'s allmost the same question\'s everytime, and atleast 3 times everyday it\'s good training.
And knowing that i\'m not alone make my feel a little less unsecure.

And Drey.. You are cruel.. Those Ulbenaut\'s (or something) just LOVE to kill me. When i come back to town with 180kg gold ore, and low stamina... Those ugly thing\'s was everyware.
They killed me 3times before i manage to get out of town.  :P
