Title: Wut Engine Do the Devs use
Post by: Einhander on June 28, 2005, 07:52:32 am
Every game has its own engine to make the game easier to produce, such as the Unreal Engine (used in games like Lineage 2, Unreal TOurnament 2004, and splinter Cell) Wut engine do the Devs use? or do they code PS by themselves?

And I would also add some functionality of Crystal Entity Layer.

You find more information about the 3D SDK Crystal Space at http://www.crystalspace3d.org

\"What\"
Crystal Space, but don\'t think we are using some engine here  that we just said \"Let\'s pick this one\". No, some devs in PlaneShift are activly developing CS and CEL (Our entity system), so it\'s a kinda of symbios

Back during Atomic Blue, sometime before the crystal hunt started I recall one of the devs claiming that he had written the graphics engine that PlaneShift uses.  Did the team move away from that engine?  Or is it Crystal Space that he developed?

That was probably me. I\'m the author of Crystal Space but I didn\'t write it for PlaneShift :-)

Of course PlaneShift is still the biggest project that uses Crystal Space so the influence of PlaneShift on Crystal Space is pretty big.

Greetings,

Greetings,

So you must bend over backwards for our whims and fancies! Or we shall switch to a NEW engine!

(Thereby increasing PS development time by roughly three more centuries.)

BUt, Since we have the next-gen engine coming up like the Unreal Engine 3 (which is cool). how is crystal space able to counter it? What feature does Crystal space stand out more than the unreal Engine 3?

If you don\'t get to see Unreal 3 Engine check out these screenshots:

Crystal Space is free. Unreal Engine 3 is VERY VERY far from being free. Also check out some of the screenshots on the CS site and also the movie section on the CS site. CS is not doing all that bad these days.

First of all, why the hell hundreds of threads like these are needed. It\'s still an enigma for me.

Now, comes my question. Why would the PlaneShift developers want to \"counter\" the Unreal III engine? I guess you still don\'t know that this is still a MMORPG, and using an engine similar with the UIII one would be simply a torment. You can\'t even imagine how many players would be able to play it, for reasons that don\'t need any explanation.

yes, why would you compare the unreal 3 engine to this, this is free, and unreal 3 i guess took tons of development.
i\'m not saying cs is bad, cause my pc takes hours to load, and there is lot\'s of detail, but be real! no free project can ever win from such a huge, big, money costing engine.
( im gonna buy an xbox 360 i think, so i\'m gonna play that game, gears of war)

I disagree with saying CS can not compare: take a look at Boonez: http://bonez-adventures.com/main.html made by just a small team, it looks like an improved version of Diablo2. Granted, it has none of the content yet, but if one person could make a game that took 100\'s of developers, CS has a huge potential.

And crystal space is still being developed- when you see some of the screen shots on the website, and see what could be done if we just chained down some artists... speaking of which, anyone want to volounteer? :D

i just ment that unreal 3 is going to play on the next gen consoles/computers, so it uses more ghz and stuff. cs must also run on the slower comps, like mine. but i have to admit i didn\'t saw those images (exept for those on the site of course)

my pc is just crap, and therefor i can never play something nice, exept with details on low.

[edit] didn\'t mean to offend anyone, but i can\'t express myself so well in english cause i\'m dutch you know..

[edit2 after 5 minutes] watched that trailer from bonez games, and aaaw. i want that game!!!
