Title: The Athenaeum of Magic
Post by: Phinehas on July 06, 2005, 01:54:04 am
Well, it\'s finally here. Many of you have heard rumors of it, but were unsure as to the substance behind the ideas. Many others have come to see it, but left quickly in the realization that it was far from completed. Now it is made public to all. The doors of the Athenaeum of Magic open today.

The Athanaeum of Magic is an organization for the mages of Yliakum. By no means do we discourage others from visiting us, but it is aimed mainly at those interested in magic. Simply put, this is a place where mages can spend time learning, studying, discussing, and practicing what they love: magic. The Athenaeum consists of:

A library, run by mages, but accessible to all. All forms of literature are welcome in our library.

A tavern for mages to have a place where they can spend some leisure time with others of the same interests.

An arena, magically reinforced to allow mages to practice their arts upon one another. The magical reinforcement not only keeps them from razing the Athenaeum, but it also keeps them from seriously harming each other.

A study hall, where mages can discuss among themselves all things related to the arcane.

A system of awards, carefully developed to assess and acknowledge individual mages\' abilities. Thereby allowing each mage receive recognition for his achievements.(under construction)

An informal tutoring and mentoring system, to allow younger mages to learn from those with more experience.

Disclaimer: The Athenaeum of Magic is not fully completed. However, I made the decision to release it to the public anyway because I realized that due to it\'s nature, it will be a constantly growing and evolving thing. The process has gone as far as it can with the members it has, but it needs more people to keep from stagnating. So when you visit, bear in mind that it\'s a work in progress.

edit: The site is http://www.theaom.tk

So you finally went public with this. ;)

If any of my characters could do a smidge of magic, I would be right there. :D

But good luck!

Thank goodness they don\'t! Not that I wouldn\'t love to have you, but a guy\'s got to have at least one area of expertise all to himself. :P

No no. Make no mistake. This is NOT a guild! This is an organisation for mages in general. It is for mages of all guilds, and guildless mages, too, of course.

Also, Cyl, although this is oriented towards mages, anyone who wants to learn is welcome. I\'m sure everyone will find the library interesting, and the tavern has the best wine in Yliakum.

Very interesting, but for what i\'ve understand those awards are kind of a promotion system. And that would be very hard to be in-game because of the mages been from diferent guilds. Or you could be talking of special items that the organization members could use (such as rings, clothes), in any case, it\'s a good idea that could allow the rest of the players to distinguish who is in the organization and who is not (that could be used in guilds and another organizations too, in a future not to far away from us; at least I hope so ;) )

The web-site is pretty good too.

By the way:
13.11.04
Finally, after the disastrous wiping of the database, we have the Athenaeum up and running again! I have switched from the ewiki to pmwiki, and for now, everyone can edit pages and make their own. Feel free to add to our library!

The organization is older then I thought so.

Good Luck with it :)

I\'m not sure I quite grasp what your saying, but I\'ll tell you the idea so far...

The idea for that system of awards is just what it says, a way for mages to know who has achieved what. Eventually we hope to achieve a status where all the mages of Yliakum consider our titles and badges a universal acknowledgement of skill. It won\'t be items yet, because we don\'t have the ability to do that, but it might in the future, who knows?

I hope that gives you an idea of what it\'s meant to be.

Unlike most things I do, this organisation is not some bizarre plot to further my popularity. It is honestly an organisation to benefit all mages to the extent that they are willing.

Also, as I pointed out to Efflixi in a pm I just sent him. There is not necessarily such a thing as \"membership\" in the AoM. You do not have to make a conscious choice to become a member and dedicate yourself to the thing. It is open to all, and places no restrictions on you if you decide to visit. I do hope you come and visit, if only to taste our wine and read a few books.

And that said, I hope I get the time to visit you Phinehas, and it will be to do more than drink wine, maybe even a few duels ;)

I think there should be a seperate thing where new people to magic who want to learn, join you, and get taught by some of your full time members (I\'m sure you have some) and then let them go about however they want with their new knowledge of magic. :D

Runt? wait..who\'s the crippled lemur in this conversation??? I cant heeeear you.. :P

Hence, the mentor system, although it\'s informal. The idea is still that the younger mages can be paired up with more experienced mages who will teach them the arcane.
