Hello,
my name in Planeshift was \"Eiffell\".But Cereja saw my name and renamed me to \"Eify\".He said the reason is that there is the Eiffel Tower in France. But is that a valid reason?Eiffel Tower isnt a Trademark.
Another problem:
I am in a Forum(http://history.bee-sys.de).Its the forum of Winhistory(http://www.winhistory.de).We call us the \"WH-Community\".I had created a Guild named \"WH Guild\".But cereja said, this name is invalid because of Windows is a trademark of Microsoft.
Are these reasons valid?Especially i want my username Eiffell(with the both L) back.
I hope anyone can understand me because my englisch isn\'t so good.I am from Germany.
Thanks

Hahahaha.
You know, most of the GMs may be total idiots, but they certainly are entertaining.
Entertaining in the sense that as long as your not in the same room as them, you can laugh. :baby:
Oh, by the way, your post is perfectly understandable in case you were wondering. Probably more so then mine.

I think the reasoning for this rename is fair and understandable, a fantasy. medieval roleplay setting, with some general common sense, its not hard to comprehend.
as for guilds, we preferably do not like guilds that have their name shortened to just one letter, or that referring to a community outside of the planeshift setting, as this, infact, beleive it or not, is unique and we would like to keep it that way, now, having a community playing many games with the same name is ok, but we prefer that name to be understandable, and comprehendable, to that of someone that was born in the medieval era. simple :)
As for Kiern, well... we all have our opinions, but there\'s no need to call people idiots, especially if you are one yourself.
Take care :)

\"Need\" is a funny thing, my good friend. You may not think it is necessary for someone to call someone else an idiot. I, on the other hand, feel that if someone with a certain amount of power is, in fact, being an idiot they need to be called out on it. Me being an idiot, however, has little to no effect on you or anyone else.
Therefore, the point that there is no need for me to call someone an idiot is an opinion on your part. And one that I take no value in.

Mhh.There is no chance to get my old nickname back? This is my name everywhere i am registered. Its my brand name.
@Kiern: Oh,thanks.I hope this post is the same ;)
And now i\'ve learned: Never talk to GM\'s >.<

Unfortunately not everything from your OOC past can be carried into PlaneShift, names and guild associations included. I do not think that Eiffell is a valid name since it has obvious OOC ties to the RL world. The guild is definitely out of the question, since it has nothing to do with the IC setting of PlaneShift.
Please remember that roleplay and originality are the key concepts of the PlaneShift world - if you do not agree, you have all the freedom to find another game and another community :)

Ok ok,i think I was outvoted(is that the right word?).
If i have consided(is that the right word, too?) a new nickname for me,can a GM rename me?I think Eify is a silly name.
And for the guild...ok.I conside a new name. But i can change the name of it myself. :)
Thanks to everyone!

If you think of a better name for yourself, you can definitely send a petition in the game and get your name changed :) As for the guild, may I recommend not just a name change, but a more roleplay (or at least not OOC) goal or reason for existing? OOC guilds do not survive well in PlaneShift, as well as guilds that serve only as a permanent group for several friends. Ultimately it is your business, and if the guild name is appropriate, no one will bother you about the details. If you will think about expanding your guild and inviting future members, however, it is recommended that you think of a story/goals/ranks that will not involve real-life.
Good luck, either way!

I dont really think that your name should have been changed, since the Effiel tower only has one \'l\'. I mean when i look at the name Effiell i dont really think of France. There is the temple of artemis at Ephesus but that doesnt mean you cant name your character Artemis...
Plus i would have thought they would ask you what you wanted it changed to before they did.
-
HAHAHA oh you gm\'s and your weird logic, Eiffel may be the name of a tower in the real world but before it was built it was just a name, as it is just a name in a world where such a tower does not exist, therefore it really doesn\'t have any ties to the real world, now if someone called themselves eiffel tower that would be a direct link to the real world
-
Ramlamboo, how you think that the name Artemis is a valid name in the Planeshift world is beyond me. So I presume that you can make a character named Hercules, Odysseus, Poseidon, or Athena, as well? Please. Don\'t be silly.
Remvak, you can read previous name discussions to understand why names that have OOC -ties- are a bad idea. Being one letter off the actual RL name is no excuse. By the same logic, Herrcules or Poseiddon would be valid too, and that is laughable. Microwaves do not exist in Planeshift, does that mean a character named Microwave is alright? Formulate a better argument, and then maybe you can be taken seriously.

Well, my friends and peoples, to tell you the truth, one of my chars will be named Moon (first name). And I pity the GM who tries to change it.
-
What do you mean, tries? ;) A few clicks is all it takes.

*Rolls eyes.* Roleplaying on Planeshift is just a chatroom with limited graphics. It is NOT the backbone of the community.
Besides, Cyrus was a Emperor who ruled over the jews, does that make my name invalid?

*the person known as UtM gets a huge evil grin*
Very well.... \'does\'.

And yet we have quite obvious RolePlay naming rules. Take it up with the higher ups, particularly the rule makers. For now these are the rules that are enforced.

In my opinion it depends on how widely known the name is in real-life, and how many others use/have used it besides the Emperor. No doubts names like Cleopatra, Nebuchadnezzar, or Gilgamesh are off-limits. But search for Cyrus online and you find it used as a name that is not reserved for the past ruler, unlike the ones I have listed.

Well anyways, Eiffell is different circumstances. First, Eiffel Tower is not a person. Secondly, they would be pronounced differently. And last, Eiffel Tower is two words and the persons last name would be different.
In any case, if that ruins your role-playing experience, then that\'s just sad.
Also, how many fantasy books have characters in them which is somehow related to the \"real world\". I know for a fact I\'ve seen the name \"Moon\" many times (usually last but eh).
-
I too think that his name is quiet valid. No, its not the same as Poseidon etc. But hey, its even spelled diffrently! besides, Eiffel tower and Eiffell \"Warnisus\" are totally diffrent things. If even that messes up your rp, then your not a very good rper.
And even if you should have changed it, the GM should have asked him for another valid name he could have picked.
P.S. In no way am i debating, it is a discussion, I personally have no official side, I mean, I guess it should have been changed but still...
-
I agree with what most said, the name Eiffell might remind some of the eiffel tower but that is a problem of the ones that do think of the 200m tall steel tower in my eyes. This particular name is in fact a name of the person Albert Eiffel .. with an extra l. The people who see ties with the outside world are more wrong here in my eyes since they aren\'t submerged into roleplaying enough to see it as just a name.
Of course I understand the GM\'s reaction but I do think they should be a bit more userfriendly and at least give the people a chance to rename their characters as they would like.
As for the guild name .. there I do agree it has nothing to do with the planeshift setting at all and shouldn\'t be used.

Read. Listen. Learn.
Names relating to famous real-life places or landmarks are unacceptable according to the naming policy. As some more considerate players may realise, it is difficult to draw the line of \'what is famous\' or \'well-known\', and the GM must excersize his or her own judgement on a case-by-case basis.
GMs reserve the right to rename anyone for any reason- as it is with *all* MMORPGs.
This is not a valid topic for discussion on the forums. Every single post above this is the reason why. A pointless, endless, fruitless debate.
If you are unhappy with a decision, discuss it with the GM in question. If this does not yeild desirable results, take it up with an admin, such as Vengeance, acraig, or Talad, in IRC.
The Planeshift channel is located on IRC:
Server: irc.freenode.com
Channel: #planeshift
Please send a private message to one of the admins, either by double-clicking their name (if you are using the mIRC client), or by typing:
/msg query
(without the < > symbols, and replacing the necessary words.)
The main IRC channel is also not a suitable place to begin arguments about GM decisions.
