Title: Classes/Quest
Post by: Z on July 11, 2005, 03:22:41 pm
Now i think i know how to find a quest (talk to NPC\'s), but how do i train to be something like a cleric, or if i want to be a ranger, or maybe even a mage.

I was wonderin if there was any other class i can become besides knight and barbarian.

Well, Planeshift doesn\'t use classes. You don\'t need to pick a class or something. You can just train the skills you like to master. At this moment only a few skills are implemented, as the PS is still a game in his very early stage of developement (pre-alpha tech demo).

Skills that are implemented are: fighting skills, magical skills and mining skills. Basic crafting skills might be implemented soon. (don\'t ask when, it\'s unknown ;))

Feel free to roleplay whatever \'class\' you like, be it a ranger, cleric or something else. Nobody will ask if you can back it up with skills.

Have fun!

Edit: I assume you know how the training system itself woks, as that is handeled in your previous thread.

yea, i thin k i fully understand the aspects of the game in it\'s developement now, and now to enjoy it!

Map would have been nice, but sum weary traveler will make a map of the whole world more than likely and will sell it and make LOADS of trias........

hmmm, do i smell a quest?

Not just some weary traveler - anyone who will work with the future Cartography skill. Maps will probably be shared between players, but NPC merchants will not sell them. So there is no way that one single player could have a monopoly on maps, unless the area needed to be accessed for the map-making is too dangerous for the others to survive in.

A map monopoly? Not really ;) Besides, such a thing can only occur with the Explorers *grin*

not poo. i like the idea of not being limited to staffs and robes by choosing a mage in character creation just because i want to effectively be able to use magic. or choose a warrior class to have cool sword, but be lacking in the intelligience department. if there was a advantage/disadvantage system for the classes anyway......

No character classes adds a new aspect to the RPG world. Nearly every game you see you belong to a class with limits. Here you can gain pointas and be what you want to be with little restriction based on race instead. I like that a lot.

In Planeshift you create your own history, your own bacground storry and you are bourn with nothing.
Having predetermined classes would be strange because, as in reallife you aren\'t predetermined to nothing and you create your own destiny.
You only have some race specific advantages and disadvantages, and that seems preety fair to me ;)

This is way better because you don\'t need to worry about being restricted into any class which only lets you use certain abilities.

And if you were like \"man I don\'t like this mage crap\" you don\'t have to go and create a new character, you can just keep your same character and just follow a different proffesion!

some rpgs ive played set up classes and some allowed free form character creation, one thing i noticed is that in free form we all had extensivly flushed out character concepts, while class based games were more of a \"lemme get in this ranger bot and put my seat belt on and away i go\"
for serious roleplay a free form point based system seems almost essential and im glad this game chose that direction.
think of meeting 10 people in game and all 10 having different skills. that to me is as awesome as the dali lama stoppin by for tea.
