Title: Mac Commands
Post by: leuxast on July 15, 2005, 02:55:50 am
I have heard from a not very reliable source, that on a Mac you can turn on a text based window (Linux sort of thing) by pressing A whilst starting up.
I was wondering A: Whether it is true and B: What are the commands!
Thankyou everyone!

I think you\'re confusing two things. A mac as an underlying Un*x-system (BSD-based), kinda like Linux, and you should be able to get to the terminal program somehow (try system menus - I never had a Mac, and haven\'t even tried OSX, so I can\'t tell you where it\'s hidden). Commands here include \"ls\", \"cat\", \"man\".

The thing you can get to by holding a key when booting, is the Mac \"BIOS\", called OpenFirmware. It\'s more like the sun PROM Monitor than a PC BIOS though, I believe. Don\'t play around with that unless you know what you\'re doing, you might end up with a system that\'s unable to boot - or the other way around if you know what you\'re doing: Fixing a system that\'s unable to boot.

Open your Application folder, the open the folder called Utility, Help programs or what it is called in English. In this folder there is a program called \"Terminal\". I guess this is what you\'re looking for

When you are booting, hold Apple-S and you will go into single user mode, which is very similar to a standard BSD boot.

I made my mac unbootable trying to make it not start aqua as a default.  Ended up having to reformat the harddrive.  Fortunately, it\'s just my hobby computer and all my important stuff is on my linux box.
