is the server down or what? ive been trying to connect to the server, and next to the server name it says \"fail\" and an error message appears when i try to connect. is this a bug... or is it the server?
-
just looked yes still down
-
Yes, try to read a little around. It\'s down and no one knows how long. We just have to wait.
-
awww man! i was hoping to play today.
-
Yes, there is a broken hop in the network somewhere so even I cannot access the server at the moment. Waiting for a report from Fragnetics as to what the issue is. We have another server on Fragnetics that we can setup if things cannot be resolved.
-
its back :-)
-
there should be multiple severs... but u guys r probably workin on that.
-
Wrong forum! Moved to Technical Help.

Well it is as of 17:00 BST. (this board is 8 hrs behind my locale).
-
Yes, server is not responding again for some reason so looking into it.
-
well, I guess im off for a cigarette.. its 1:20 am (japan time) and the server is still offline. you should be able to smoke cigarettes in the final verson :) i wonder how long it will be down? im almost out of smokes... go acraig were counting on you!
-
So we all know the server is down.
From the IT standpoint. What has caused this. I am now studying Network Tech in college and would love to know more. Does this happen regularly? As well great job to everyone who has been building this. I played many months ago before any fighting was a capability. I really enjoyed the little I did last night. Wonderful fun and the other peeps are great!

Made by herbalists. Weakest available light source, Improves agility temporarily, drains 1HP permanently?
Hmm, if you die from lung cancer, can you get back to life through the Death Realm?

Well, at the moment I am unsure. I cannot ssh to the machine so the entire machine is
a) crashed/locked up
b) powered off
c) disconnected from the Internet.
This is not a normal occurance and the machine has been rock solid for a number of years now. The last week or so we\'ve had some issues so trying to resolve those now.

Thank you, is there an on location member that can check it out (if it is outsourced is there someone at the facility that can be called?)
Where is it located, what are the weather conditions there? As well what are the costs of mirroring to another server in the future? Has everyone logged out of the ssh session when done. If too many are open it will not let more in for security reasons...
Just a thought.
-
Thanks for the info!
It\'s great to have someone from the team posting in such a thread. Now we know about the situation. Thanks again!

The server is donated by http://www.fragnetics.com and are based out of Singapore. At the moment it\'s pretty early in the morning there :). So will send them an email to see what the status is. The second machine they donated to use ( currently using as a development server ) is ok so is probably not a weather issue.
Right now the servers are donated free of charge and moving to a new server provider would involve a lot of work ( ie signing new contracts etc ). Like I said, there is a second machine that we can use in an emergancy if the primary won\'t be available.
There are only a couple of people that SSH in so I don\'t think it\'s that. Plus the fact the webserver is also down makes me assume the machine is either off or totally disconnected from the Internet.
-
I just want to second IlBaal.
Every information is highly appreciated. Thank you!
regards
backeroo

No problem. Anything that can help keep people informed to we don\'t get strange rumors.
-
In the CCNA (Router Class) even one person not logging out of a Telnet session could cause it if it was done mutiple times. Thanks for the input.
Doing a great job guys, I appreciate the free info that is shared here.

-
still down indeed :(
Great to see you posting Acraig :D Is really apreciated
Well the fragnetics.laanx site is down aswell so it\'s definately not a bug ;)
-
can you please set up the backup server, this server seems to go down alot

The way to fix this is to make it not die in the first place. A backup server running the same unstable program would crash just as much... :P
-
oh, i thought the backup server wasnt from laanx fragnetics, and from a different source
-
The Laanx.fragnetics.com site is now up!
it is displaying an old report, but i expect the server to be operable soon :)
EDIT: never mind, down again :(
-
DF999 soon is a relative term. Do we yet know the official problem?
Is it on the Physical, Datalink, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation, or Application layer?
We do not know is an acceptable answer. If this is due to software how long has this version been running? As well what is the Hardware setup out there like? Just a couple of questions I had...
Edit: Dangit :P :D
-
DEVS, have you got any word from the crew at Lannx Fragnetics at all?! its killing me, this was my day off school :(
-
Doh! Now the laanx server is down again. Even the laanx news page isn\'t responding.
Hmm, maybe that\'s a sign of progress? Some guy in Singapore just turned on/enabled the server (that\'s my guess) and now he decided to turn it off again..?
-
its some evil guy who just turned it off? i doubt it :P
-
It seems there is soemthign wrong with the server itself- perhaps bad hardware, but in this last restart all that was turned on was the websrver, and it still crashed after a few minutes. Chrischoo and others at Fragnetics should be looking into what\'s wrong with it...
Hopefully there will be a good answer soon ;(
-
will you be making more server\'s anytime soon?
Thanks
-
what a let down, i was really hoping the servers would be back online by now :(, bring on the backup!!!
-
Lets hope the sever is up by tommaro morning.
-
Yaaah... I just recently downloaded the game and haven\'t been able to play it from the downtime. :/ I hope it\'s fixed by tomorrow.
-
no, lets hope 5 mins :D
-
Yes, it is a concern that the server has failed twice in the last week or so. But in the end we get what we pay for. We have recieved excellent support from the Fragnetics team but, to be honest, we are not in a position to demand anything. I\'m sure if they are experiencing any troubles over there paying customers have first :)
-
Is there anyone who have been assigned the task of keeping relations between the PlaneShift community and FragNetics? If so, I suggest that person try to get in touch with them and at least ask what\'s up.
Don\'t you just hate those MMORPG abstinences, though? :\\
-
odd2k, i think that if there was someway of contacting them other then just e-mail, they would have done that by now, its just a matter of putting it on the forum if they have heard anything.

To all concerned... everyone.
1. Acraig is correct. We have space donated. Now if any of yous wish to donate a high end mirror there may be talk... I don\'t know.
2. We get this game for FREE!!!!! So the fact that it is down should not bother us too much. Now if you were paying $15 a month complain all you want. I am content that we have the ability to play for free.
3. The suggestions/questions I have posed I meant to help the problem. As well to gain further knowledge. If you have any pointers please post them as the staff may not know/have thought of your idea. I am glad to know that there are things being done. I am sure that as soon as staff knows what is going on they will tell us.
4. Why not keep stories going on in the forums... I remeber a day when we did this without graphics and when the grapics came we just moved over... do it as the characters will be deleted soon we can all just smile, thank everyone working on it and keep the story going so we can pick up without the levels... If I am wrong on this point please tell me someone.
5. I just spent the last 4 hours beating people up like this Belegarth style. It was awsome. I got to live the game IRL!!!! So if you want to play, put some camping foam on PVC and beat your neighbor with it. As well I love to get out when my computer does not work. I find that I have fun and loose weight.
6. What are some suggestions that we have to prevent this again... please let the Staff know.
7. If we all try to construct good solutions to all problems we face as a community they may be prevented in the future.
If I have overstepped bounds please forgive me as I had to put a Ranger in Training and a squire in their place tonight. I do realize I may be venting here, but I believe I have a valid point to all of this.

Hey All,
I don\'t know if this will help anyone in this server crash or in any furure ones, but about ten minutes before the server crashed I had a warning that there was some virus/trojan on the server. I can\'t give anymore detail as I had been afk making a cup of tea, and just had a quick glimpse of it as I sat back down. Whatever it was it disconnected me from the server. I logged back on and played for about ten minutes when the server failed.
Don\'t know if it helps but I thought I would relate this just in case it can.

well the devs have the email of server provider, who will very kindly run on down and check things out when he has the time.

Anyone saw this thread on the fragnetic forum?
http://www.fragnetics.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5834&sid=e2b18ab678d4f2df1a7975333a5a440a
Don\'t know what i should make of this.

There are some problems which we are trying to solve. Please be patient. :)
-
The server was down due to a faulty CPU fan. This caused the machine to shut down automatically 3 times in the past week.
On the first occasion we were notified about 1 day after the server stopped responding. We do not actively keep tabs on the server but I check my e-mail very frequently and we did not hear anything until about 24 hours after the shutdown.
The second time the server went down was about 3 days after the first instance. We sent in a restart request a few hours after I noticed the server went down.
However, the server went down again 1 hour after the 2nd reboot. I went to the data centre a few hours later to look at what went wrong. The problem was identified soon after and I swapped out the faulty CPU fan.
Granted we ought to keep tabs on the server, some of the comments here make it seem that our server shuts itself down on a weekly basis. You\'d notice that our uptime is actually pretty decent based on statistics at http://gandalf.fragnetics.com/status/system/proc.html
We had intended to swap out the CPU fan sometime last year but decided against it then. This problem is likely to surface again in about 1 year but I think we know what to do should something similar happen again. The fan gets spoilt more easily when the server is heavily utilized, and the recent increase in CPU usage by the PS server accelerated this process. My bad for not realizing it might have been due to this problem earlier - we have some experience with faulty CPU fans.
-
Thank you chrischoo for the info. It is good to have this kind of knowledge for refrence material for the future.
Keep doing a great job.
Is there any reason that it goes out about every year or so. Is that just the life of a Serverfan? Just a student trying to learn more.
-
yeah thanks for the post-mortem.
hardware failures suck. but, they happen. keep up the good job you guys have been doing to date.
