Title: Swords of Ghent (return)
Post by: Easton on July 20, 2005, 12:07:24 am
Greetings men and women of Yilakum! I would like to inform you all of the return of the Swords of Ghent.  For those of you who do not remember us for one reason or another i would like to explain a few things about the guild...

The Swords of Ghent was a guild that was around since about january of 2005.  We worked hard to increase our guild\'s strength and popularity. During all of our hard work we made many friends and learned a lot about the world aroud us.  After a few weeks our hard work payed off as we saw that we had earned our place in Yilakum as a Neutral-Good guild of modest strength and respectability. Soon enough, all of that was to be threatened by a fiend with such an evil glare that he could willingly snatch the souls of the good and mend them into mindless slaves that awaited his every word. The name of this creature stills leaves a scar in Yilakum that may never heal. His name is Am-heh.

The Swords of Ghent, being a relatively young guild at the time, had, by chance, crossed paths with Am-heh. When he laid eyes on this new, blossoming, young guild, he suddenly felt a hunger for war. Without even putting much effort into it, Am-heh got the Swords of Ghent to enter a great war.

The Swords of Ghent felt uneasy about this new war. Many wondered how we would fare against such an evil being.  But they knew that they had the one thing that Am-heh didn\'t- allies.  The Swords of Ghent joined a great alliance that included many guilds who understood the need to stick together and protect the greater population of Yilakum. Some people who weren\'t apart of any guild joined the alliance by supplying information to the guilds. But Am-heh had plans of his own...

Am-heh was a master of disguise, and this was not known by any of the guilds against him. Am-heh in one of his many disguises infiltrated the Swords of Ghent guild and stole priceless information and large sums of money. It was at this point that the Swords of Ghent learned their two greatest lessons:

1) knowledge is priceless

and

2) war only feeds the evil that you fight

With this new-found understanding of their enemy, the Swords of Ghent decided that it would in the best interest of Yilakum to end the war before it spread to the neutral guilds. Everyone in the Great Alliance agreed to end the war with Am-heh. Although some may have felt that they had failed to rid the world of evil, they knew that one day, the battle would be fought again, and that the good in the world would undo the evil that Am-heh had brought to its citizens.

The consequences of that war are still being felt today.  More and more evil guilds are spawning as we speak. All of them preparing for something bigger than we have ever known. We feel it is our duty to do whatever it takes to protect the inhabitants of Yilakum. We have learned from war and understand that all must be done to avoid it, but all must also be done to prepare for it and understand it.

Ranks:
Lord- Essentially a Lord Protector but he started the guild. This person is in charge of making sure things are running well in the guild and has the responsibility of listening to every voice that can be heard in the guild. He is much less important than any other rank in the guild.. and he knows it.

Lord Protector- This rank is reserved for the most trusted members of the guild. They have been in the guild for the longest, and have a general understanding of all aspects of Yilakum and its inhabitants. They resolve all problems that should arise and advise the Lord on any decisions that need to be made.

Paladin- These members are probably the most-skilled in the guild. They are skilled in one weapon type, and in at least one school of magic. In addition, they have refined charisma skills and can easily convince weaker enemies to avoid a battle that would bring unneccessary bloodshed.

Knight- A member of this rank would be highly-skilled in at least one weapon type. They spend most of their time refining their skills and studying their enemies. They experiment in new battle techniques and are always prepared to be at the frontlines of a battle if needed.

Magician- These are the ones who have dedicated their lives to studying at least one of the six schools of magic. They are dedicated to their studies and may also double as a seeker if a situation were to call for it.

Seeker- These members are very special. They are skilled in the languages of Yilakum, and they generally have an immense understanding of the inhabitants of the world around them. They are in charge of general knowledge and understanding of anything and everything in Yilakum.

Craftsman- These members are very important to the infrastructure of the guild. They provide both income and resources that may be put to use in many ways by the guild members. These members should be very skilled in the various crafts and are in charge of learning about any new crafts they should discover. They also have a say in how the resources should be used.

Man-at-Arms- This level is the level in which a fairly new member will decide what his specialty will be. This is a very important time for a member, as it decides what his purpose in the guild will be.

Squire- Made up of new recruits. This is where a new member will learn about his fellow guild members and the world around him.

Thanks for listening to our story and i hope you all will see more of the Swords of Ghent around soon. :)

yeah.. im hoping to work on a site.. im waiting to see if someone wants to make a nice one for me though.. otherwise ill have to stick to a template site or something temporarily.

and the absence of the swords of ghent for a while was caused by the inactivity of new recruits and my absence for several weeks. am-heh gave us reason to be here for as long as we were.

thanks for the post :)

I met Easton this morning and he seemed like a good guy. He helped this newbie that\'s for sure, he saved me from getting pumbled by some brawler, and gave me some basic advice. So I will give joining his guild a lot of thought. Thanks Easton.

Do you have any actual history of how Swords of Ghent came to be?  How does the Swords of Ghent relate/ fit in, in the realm of PS?

War, words, love, hate, everything feeds evil.

Anyway, I\'m glad there\'s still people that will pick up their swords to protect the innocent. The dance of War can\'t be danced alone.

Good luck Easton, may your steel shine with resolve.

alright.. i have been working hard on the guild, and i got a template site up.. yes i know, template :(
but it will have to do for now.. and it has forums, which is better than anything i could have made. so.. here\'s the address..

http://www.guilduniverse.com/sog

also, the Code of Honor has been revised and updated:

What is the Swords of Ghent Code of Honor?

The Code of Honor contains the rules that all members MUST ABIDE BY AT ALL TIMES. The code is as follows:

1. You will treat every person in Yilakum with respect.

2. You will RP (roleplay) when neccessary.

3. You will be at least fairly active- not being absent for more than ten days without the proper notification. (note: we are felxible if you communicate with us)

4. You will visit the Planeshift forums occasionally. They are an excellent source of information and are a vital part to your becoming apart of the PS community.

5. You will visit the SoG forums at least once every 10 days. There will often be urgent messages, and polls that will need to be seen by everyone in the guild as soon as possible. (and yes, we can keep track of your activity within this site)

6. You understand and will uphold the honor of being a member of the Swords of Ghent. If a complaint is recieved, and found to be vaild, you will be punished as seen fit.

and for those who wish to become a member:

How do I Apply For Membership?

To apply for the Swords of Ghent, you must set up an interview. This is an essential part of the recruitment process, as we have a policy of \"quality over quantity\".

If you would like to schedule an appointment: Please see a member in-game, post here, and/or email me (RolexWatch@aol.com) if you do all three of these, your acceptance process will be greatly accelerated.

for more information i suggest you check out the public forums on the site.. it may prove to be very informative.

Stay Safe,
Easton Ghent

Welcom back Easton!

I would like to extend the hand of friendship from both myself and the Darschis Knights to the Swords of Ghent. It\'s nice to know that my small band of knights does not stand alone against the dark forces that have come to threaten this land.

Also if you would like when Aranis gets finished with our site I will see if he is willing to help you with yours.

I\'m with Efflixi on this one. No idea who you are, rather arrogant of you to presume...

Also, may I point out the irony of having a \"magicians\" rank in  the Swords of Ghent?

If you have no understanding of magic, leave it out of your guild.

That statement Phinehas (or should I say Phinhas) is completely ilogical and shows a truly profound lack of understanding as to just what would be considered a weapon in a magical world.

Pssst... little hint, when you\'re telling someone off, try not to mispell words...

Anyways, I have no idea what your cryptic statement meant, but before you explain make sure that you really want to get into an argument with me about one of the few things I do know...

Also, to clarify, the last sentence was directed at guilds in general, not this one in particular. I\'m sick of guilds who have no knowledge of magic, and aren\'t particularly interested in it adding a magic branch to their guild just because \"that\'s what you do\".

I simply ask for magic to be given the same respect as is given to other things, such as weaponry. I don\'t like the attitude that \"Well, we made a guild for sword-fighters, but we better add a magic branch in too, just in case.\" Not only is it wrong for the obvious reason, but then you also end up with a lot of \"Heads of Magic Departments\" whose knowledge of magic is limited to opening their spellbook and clicking Cast Flame Burst.

so you assume that i do not know anything about magic? anyway, since this is my guild thread, please keep it to constructive crticism, otherwise, i will make a \"flame my guild\" thread if the people demand it.

and thank you Hatchnet for the offer about the website, it is greatly appreciated, and i am sure our guilds will have a future together in some form

Phinehas I have no desire to start an argument with you, as I am sure you know more about magic than I.

I must however assure you as to the place magic will have in this guild. Magic will have an equal place amonst all other skills available. This is wise and legitimate. We are neither a hack or cast guild specifically. We are a guild seeking quality people, and we require quality people of all skill types in order to make a complete and balanced guild. To do otherwise would be like having a guild where everyone was a fisherman, but no one was a cook. We would have a lot of fish that we could do nothing with. The benefit would be lost. We are not adding it just because, \"it is what you do.\" We have a magic rank because we see it as important. Therefore we are doing exactly as you desire; giving magic the same respect as all other skills. I myself as a senior member of this guild will be training in weapons and magic because I recognise both as valid. Further I hope we will have as many members training in weapons, as in magic, as in crafting, as in all of the skills.

As to the name \"Swords of Ghent. This title does not restrict us in anyway from having magicians. In the same way not everybody in an army is an infantry soldier. An army has cooks, typists, mechanics etc; and because they have these elements it does not proclude the title of army being justifiably used.

swords can just be a symbolism fo something used to attack someone else, being a brute weapon or magical spell.  Open your minds a little guys and stop acting like narrow-minded, one track morons who try to think of any reason to put down a good guild.  ***And to think I thought of that the very first time I saw the name and am only 16***

Well, the Swords of Ghent were disbanded for a bit, but due to a few more-than-generous donations and a bit of hard work, we have reformed.

Our first order of business is to organize the guild and regain a stable membership. In addition to that, i am working on earning the tria to repay those who helped us in our time of need.

If anyone is interested in joining our ranks please visit the forums at

http://www.guilduniverse.com/sog/forums.aspx

We are looking for members and we hope to see you all soon.

Title: I would like to learn more about this guild.
Post by: Glendyl Aers on November 09, 2005, 02:41:40 am
I have viewed the web page, and would like to know more.

Is there a list of the ingame names of players that I might add to my buddy list, (with permission).

This way we could get to know each other, any my suitablility for membership could be guaged.

A little about myself to begin with, ingame my character is known as Glendyl Aers, I tend to wander around, explore as much as I am able and help others along the way to the best of my ability.

I am fairly new to the game myself, having played for around three weeks now.

Looking forward to hearing from someone.

It is only fair to mention that I am also \'researching\', three other guilds, with similar ingame ethics to mine.

Cheers.
