Now we haven\'t have many skills working but think in the end we should have skills exclude eachother like if you learn one side of magic the one oposed to that you can\'t train anymore or should become harder to learn.
Specially with things like the \"views on life\" I have seen I think exclusion is a must as you ofcourse can\'t believe all the ways on how energy should be used at the same time.
This would also be fun with things like crafting were if you exclude some things you can get that one can make that and an other something else but nobody can make everything.
Perhaps a semiexclusion in advance were you will state what profession you will be trying your hardest to learn and those skills will be easier to learn while skills nothing to do with it will be harder to learn.
It would give the players choices but also make the choices important and make people obviously different from eachother in what they can do.

So you say one person can\'t be both historian and mathematician? First science is humanistic and second strict (I hope i have used the rght words, probably not), does that mean that they exclude eachother? It isn\'t right.
Besides, I think that your wish lack the reason WHY. The only \"why\" i see in your post is that you think so. You assume that the magic is matter of fate and one believe that things work this, but no other way. It is, one believe, not know.
I can\'t agree with this.
I don\'t know why you want this change.

Magic: I think to perform magic you have to atune your inner energy in such a way that you can make use of it. This fits with the descriptions found inside of Planeshift.
Now I believe that it isn\'t a stretch to see that you can not be atuned to all the kinds of energy that are around becuase one is to different from an other
As for views on life skills that I have seen as skill, what is something else then magicskills, they say in the description what you believe about how your inner energy should be used.
Now if you believe you should use your energy inside of yourself you can\'t at the same time believe you should use your energy outside your body to influence things.
Same would be if religions are introduced. You can\'t be a Laanx worshipper and a Talad worshipper if both would say the other doesn\'t exist and what one says is a must the other says is a sin.
So these are excluding eachother so when you are able to train one the others should dissapear as options as soon as you started training one.
Now I think it\'s pretty obvious science is something else. You don\'t have to believe something to be an historian or a mathematician nor do you need to attune your mind to it.

Here\'s a thread that talked about some of the same stuff: Stats system need to be changed (http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=16465&boardid=11)
My main suggestions are these:
1) Mages have an alignment. Learn allot of blue, make it harder to learn red, etc.
2) Make it easier to train a skill similar to one you are good at. Good swordsman, so learn to use daggers easier (similar concepts involved).
But I don\'t think any skill should ever be excluded. You should never be prevented from doing something by the game.
