Title: Dash & Bash
Post by: Bodacher on July 30, 2005, 01:38:31 am
[Edit: Updated rules and dates]
The Dash & Bash before the crash, come one come all, and you\'ll have a ball.

Dash & Bash Tournament

What?  Single combat tournament with a twist.
Where?  Empty room in the arena next to the easy Tefs.
When?  Monday Nov. 28  2PM EST ( 1900 GMT )
Who?  Anyone who wants to have fun can join as long as you are registered before the tournament begins.  Registration will begin at 1:30PM EST and close 10 minutes prior to event start.

The Prizes:
1st:  100,000 trias plus the choice of any 2 weapons from the Hydlaa Outfitters inventory
2nd:   50,000 trias plus the choice of any one weapon from the Hydlaa Outfitters inventory
3rd:    10,000 trias.

The Rules:
Some of you may recognize this as being similar to something called jousting...

Only normal weapons will be used, and will be supplied. Anyone caught using anything other than the supplied weapon will be disqualified.  All types of weapons are allowed as long as the two competitors agree on the choice. ( melee, swords, axes, daggers ).  Each combatant may use two similar weapons, two different ones, whatever they choose and each pair may use different weapons, as long as the pair agrees to the them.
Each pair of combatants takes the field and chooses their weapon and a starting wall.
When they have signalled their readiness, the referee starts the match and they run at each other (the Dash ) and attack ( the Bash ).
They continue running through each other, all the way to the opposite wall.
They then turn and when the referee signals, they do it all over again.
This continues until one has fallen, or one or both are too tired to continue.
The winner moves on to the next round, while the fallen is welcome to return and watch.
No stopping and no running backwards.
No strafing or turning aside.
Magic is not permitted.
Food of any kind or potions are not to be used during a fight.  (We are watching you:) )They are permissable for healing between rounds however.
Referee\'s decision is final!

Spectators are welcome to attend and cheering and betting on their favourite competitors is encouraged.

We have already held 2 successful tournaments and hope for many more.  All the competitors seemed to have a good time.  I am hoping that some screenshots of the events will be posted here shortly.

With the looming wipe hanging over our heads, most players see the futility of hunting the past couple of days.  To keep them busy and to try and keep the fighting out of the plaza ( also futile perhaps ) Ganinos and I have come up with this tournament we call Dash and Bash.   There are prizes available though we realize that they don\'t mean much right now.  We\'re hoping that with a good response from the community we will hold monthly tournaments and have the winners of those come back and crown a champion for the year.  Donations for the prizes would be welcome.  Hopefully we will also have merchants and concessions available to the spectators as well!  Healers would also be a great addition as I\'m sure your services will be needed to patch up the competitors between rounds.

We welcome any comments or suggestions you might have.

For more info please see either Bodacher or Ganinos.

I think you need to try out the whole dash and bash style of fighting before you hold the tounament I don\'t think that\'ll work very well.

So, I take it this isn\'t anything to do with RP? (Not that I\'m whining, just a question)

Also, the time seems to have chosen nicely to exclude European players. :P The very fact that you post in EST and not GMT means that either you didn\'t really think about that part, or you just don\'t care... :P Again, I\'m just pointing out, not blaming as I\'m aware that it\'s not possible to choose a time that is suitable to the whole world...

Other than that... you should talk to Zan about having this in the next Festival. It looks boring to me, since there\'s no magic involved, but it looks like people were enjoying themselves, more power to \'em.

This was a GREAT event!
Congratulations Ganinos and Bodacher for organising it!
Personaly i think that these events are the thing that improves the comunity and there should be more ideeas like this.
Who said RP is missing maby looked in the wrong place :) .
I wish you both luck (not that it is needed ;) ) to make this a monthly event :)

Title: Dash & Bash Technique
Post by: Kelden on July 30, 2005, 02:15:19 pm
I would like to offer a few notes concerning the techniques of the Dash and Bash.

Those of you taking part in the first competitions will have noted some initial difficulties for the contestants to actually hit one another.

There is an explaination for this.  In one word: TIMING

Every time one starts an attack in PlaneShift, there is always a built-in delay between the time of issuing the command and the time that one\'s character actually strikes the first blow.  This time delay is a bit annoying even when facing an enemy who remains close-in and does not move.   When facing a running enemy, while you are running at the same time, introduces an element of time targeting in that your enemy will have moved out of range before your weapon is effectively brought into play.

Generally speaking, the larger the weapon, the longer the time delay that you will experience.  Bare fists are the absolute fastest to bring to bear.  A large two-handed sword is probably the slowest.  This does not mean that one cannot USE a larger weapon, but rather that one has to allow for this in one\'s calculation of exactly when during the DASH one should initiate the ATTACK command.  You will always have to initiate your attack before you actually get to the spot where your target will be.  You will each have to judge this by eye and make a best guess of the right time, allowing for speed and type of weapon.

Of course, the smaller weapons will be swifter and surer, but the larger ones will deliver more damage per stroke.  Since there is really only time for one set of blows per DASH, the larger weapon might be the better choice, but only if you can figure out the right timing.  Otherwise, it will be quite the liability.  Using two dissimilar weapons at the same time might be the most confusing combination with regard to timing, but I am only speculating on this aspect.

Set your character to \"run by default\" (the equal sign key toggles between walking or running).

It will also help you immensely if you program one of the keys on the keyboard as a shortcut for the \"/attack\" command.  Leaving the other hand free to \"steer\" your player... without having to reach for the mouse.

I hope these notes are of some use to you.  Good luck in your Dashing and Bashing.  Don\'t forget your aspirins and bandages.   ;-)

Not sure that 4pm EDT which equals 9pm GMT will exclude europeans as I\'m English and had a real laugh getting mashed by Tisouril :))

Ok fine. I meant Eastern Europeans. So sue me. Around here that makes it 11 o\'clock. While that\'s not all that late theoretically, it\'s still none too early, either. Anyways, like I said, I\'m not really complaining since you can\'t get the whole world to all fit at one time...

Aww... I missed the third edition :(
And it seems that there won\'t be one on monday since the server is down (or my stupid ISP blocked my access).
Good luck guys in turning this into a monthly event after the wipe:). Ermm... what am I saying? Yuo don\'t need luck :P . Keep up the good work!
Oh one more thing. There will be a HAGS tournament soon, it will be fun! Please check the HAGS topic :)

PS:I\'m gonna be so dead for advertising for a tournament in another\'s tournament space :P

\"Hydlaa Outfitters\"?  What happened to the Community of Valnoor?
Title:
Post by: Zan on November 25, 2005, 06:55:42 pm
Vaalnor is still around in Ojaveda as are our merchants. The Outfitters from the Dragon Council have taken up residence in Hydlaa with their store though.

Yliakum does have freedom of trade so anyone is free to start up a business.

Right when the tournament started, too, it\'s timed to crash so ironicly it\'s pathetic

For some reason, I cannot log back in...

There seems to be too much lag... ;(
I would really like to participate. ;(

At this rate, I may have to wait for the next one.

It\'s not just you
Title:
Post by: Seytra on November 25, 2005, 08:20:38 pm
This is the loop issue that has been around since most of the crashes are gone. The network part is running normally, thus you get ping replies. The actual server, however, is stuck so no processing of game events takes place. This is why it freezes for those logged in, and why noone can log in.

Edit: the effect is that noone can play (they\'re either frozen or locked out). Like a crash with ping replies.

Any estimate on how long i will take to be fixed?
Title:
Post by: Suno_Regin on November 25, 2005, 08:23:39 pm
2 hours
Title:
Post by: Seytra on November 25, 2005, 08:23:49 pm
Well, I\'ve noticed at least two incidents where the server didn\'t come back up for several hours.
Title:
Post by: Constrabus Gegami on November 25, 2005, 08:24:48 pm
I figured it was something of that nature...
Only because I was the only one moving in
game and my chat wasn\'t working, so I tried to
re-log, with no success. That told me it was
a server problem.
Title:
Post by: yayoo on November 25, 2005, 08:26:14 pm
Ok we better not flood this thread with server issues.

/me walks away to play cards for 7 hours.
Title:
Post by: Bodacher on November 25, 2005, 08:42:36 pm
Well it looks like we\'ve been stuffed for today.  My apologies to all who showed up.

There is no sense in making everyone wait around til the server comes back up today, so we are going to reschedule for Monday at the same time ( Sorry, the organizers cannot be around this weekend ). I will update the first post with the new day and time.

Once again apologies for the trouble, and I hope you all come back on Monday to try again.  Keep your fingers crossed.

Ok, but for role playing purposes, shouldn\'t guilds stay within their self-prescribed mandate?  It kind of greys the game when guilds try to be all things to all people.

Try reading up about our guild & our clan structure.  You will find that our Brown Clan is a merchant clan.  Here is part of what the Brown Clan says:

The Brown Dragons\' Clan is the Clan of merchants, crafters and everything related to trading. Being the most important source of income of the guild, this Clan will only acknowledge members that have true abilities in crafting or in trading. The House of Traders regroups all the people who wish to learn everything about trading, and The House of Crafters regroups all the people who wants to become excellent crafters in one or more crafting areas.

It had always been our plan to have a guild store.

You have a clan for  each of warriors, mages, spies, spellswords, scholars, diplomats, and merchants.  I\'m sure you can justify it as based in RP, but in truth I just think you\'re a social network of friends who want to keep contact with eachother via the guild but at the same time be able to take advantage of all that Planeshift has to offer without the use of alts.  I\'m not saying that there\'s anything wrong with that, and if you\'re an order that is trying to support itself while it waits to rise if an evil force returns to threaten the land, then it\'s justified.  At the same time, I think it\'s entirely fair to call it grey.

For real life examples, the Knights of Templar and the Samurai of Japan were also knightly orders which became merchants (bankers, and warrior-monk musicians, respectively) in order to survive.

For you to comment on anything even remotely RP-related, and even more assuming that someone does not truly have an RP reason, and even more so when implying that someone is doing wrong, and then also bashing someone who actually does something for the community and for RP, quite contrary to you, I might add, it would first and foremost take you to actually have a RP background, intention, justification and qualification.
Neither is present in your so-called \"RP\", and while it obviously is your right to still rant about things that you obviously have no clue of yourself, it doesn\'t constitute anything but meaningless babble.

And since I would be surprised beyond imagination if that would change anytime soon, even in the PS sense, and have had quite enough of you, I\'ll just ignore you, something I should have done all along.

And please if you want to continue slighting the DC, take it to the correct thread in the guild section, or better yet, keep it to yourself.  This thread is to advertise a competition that Ganios and I have held in the past and will hold again in the future.  It has nothing to do with our guild ( besides the fact that we are both members of it ).

Thanks.

I disagree with you on certain things.  So what?  Why get so upset about it?  And why express it in the form of an outburst like that?  If my opinions are truly so worthless in comparison to yours, there\'s nothing for you to be insecure about.

The prizes come from the Hydlaa Outfitters inventory, so it is technically guild related.  That said, I haven\'t insulted your guild here.

Thanks.

First off a HUGE Thank you to Ganinos for running the tournament in my absence.  ( I had planned to be the referee but RL events prevented me from attending today.)

I have not gotten the whole story, so not sure if there was GM involvement, but we actually were able to hold the entire tournament without a server crash! Woohoo!

Now the results!

1st Place: Noxide
2nd Place: Janner
3rd Place: Dylia

I wish to congratulate the winners and thank all who attended.  Please give your feedback here if you want us to continue holding this event on a monthly basis.

PS. The Janner and Noxide may stop by the shop anytime I am there to claim their prizes.

Noxide won but it was a good fight!!! I am wondering was this annouced to the public in the game? I only found out this was going on little to late through friends and was very unhappy that I could not join in the fun. :(

:D At any rate it was a good tournament and I enjoyed the show.

It was shouted all over the plaza, but I feel we may have neglected those on the road, or in Oja.

Fear not, if the rest of the feedback is as positive as what I\'ve heard so far, I\'m sure we will be doing it again, and I\'ll make sure you know about it Zorbels.

We had originally planned to make this a monthly event, with the monthly winner coming back at the end of the year for a year\'s championship....we\'ll wait and see on that one though.
