Title: Issues with 3.11
Post by: The Doctor on August 06, 2005, 07:45:22 am
First off, I\'m very new to planeshift, so thanks everyone for bearing with me.

I installed the 0.3.010 files from the website, and everything worked fine, except my client was outdated and I couldn\'t connect to the server.  The sound came up fine, the login screen, all worked.

I ran the updater, and it didn\'t update the new binaries.  I read the forum, found Platyna\'s updated installer, and ran that.  The client seems to just die after attempting to load, with no error messages.

I wiped the directory, re-installed 0.3.010, then immediately ran  Platyna\'s installer, and let it do the update, and the same thing is happening.

I run psclient, and I get :
WARNING! Crystal Space performs better in 24 or 32 bit display mode!

planeshift.application.client:
  PlaneShift Crystal Blue
This game uses Crystal Space Engine created by Jorrit and others

At which point it just stops, without error messages.  I couldn\'t find if there were issues with the new client or not, or if it\'s just the way I installed it.  Did I miss any steps between the initial install and the update?

I am unfortunately running into the same problem.

Title: "Not a JPEG file" Error
Post by: Danok on August 06, 2005, 08:56:19 am
First of all, another thanks to Platyna for her diligent work. She does work incredibly fast, doesn\'t she? :)

Unfortunately, I\'m having exactly the same problem--and I went through almost exactly the same process--re-wiped my planeshift directory, installed 3.010, ran the 3.011 installer and updater...

Debug output from the client is here: http://www.rafb.net/paste/results/3xi5o748.html. Note the \"Not a JPEG file\" error on line 666.

I\'m Running Mandriva LE 2005.  AMD x86 Architecture
Xorg 6.8.2. patch level 7mdk
Glibc 2.3.4-8mdk
Nvidia GEForce2 MX 400 - Nvidia 1.0-7667 driver

I found an earlier post about the JPEG error that acraig replied to: http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=7320&boardid=17&sid=1caee8213b6f567faf1cef115811fe3d

I also found a bug report message on Sourceforge: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=100649&aid=1240068&group_id=649

So IF it\'s related to the jpeg loader, it could either be the loader itself, the handler that passes the image to the loader, or could it be the image itself is corrupted (I tried to find it to no avail)?  Please excuse me if I sound stupid--a programmer I am not!  :(

Any Thoughts?

I do have another problem with the updater, srry to post it in that thread. If a moderator wants to move it, i understand.

Here is the problem i\'m getting when trying to launch the updater:

Quote
corentin@yos ~ $ \'/home/corentin/planeshift/PlaneShift_CBV0.3.011.linux.x86-UPDATE.run\'
Creating directory ps.cb.03.011.linux.x86.update
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing Update For Planeshift Crystal Blue Version 3.011....
Checking if dialog program is installed...
Dialog program found.

Can\'t make new window at (-3,-6), size (30,90).

I tried by clicking on it, by using the console, always the same error.

Any idea?
Title:
Post by: Hoshpak on August 06, 2005, 09:44:30 am
it seems that you have to install dialog, \"apt-get install dialog\" in Debian for example.
Title:
Post by: Nargaroth on August 06, 2005, 10:25:49 am
No, in the mesage a line says: Dialog program found.

And i tried to re-install it by RMP, install is OK, and i get the same message when trying to update PS.

I think i\'ll have to wait the full 3.11 version.

[EDIT]: Here is what i get when i try with sh

Quote
corentin@yos ~ $ sh \'/home/corentin/planeshift/PlaneShift_CBV0.3.011.linux.x86-UPDATE.run\'

Running on X? Try to maximize console window.

BTW: This is kinda stupid that you can\'t install Planeshift using text dialogs from console because the dialog window is 90x30 and console resolution without framebuffer is 80x25. Fix please?

Lol. I ran the updater, it found some 600kB, downloaded it, and then:

And \"Planeshift\'s dead baby. Planeshift\'s dead.\"

Anyway it is a big surprise you went into problems with license window size
since it haven\'t been changed since last relase.

so i tried to start ./psclient.bin
here the last thing happening is a Segmentation Fault after the radio...-message.

You could try compiling from CVS, I think that is working, provided you get the correct code tree.  Until then, we are at the mercy of the devs.

I just downloaded this yesterday, so I\'m not missing too much.  I guess that I could install it on my laptop and play in windows, but I don\'t see too much point in that.  The devs will have it fixed when they have it fixed.

The opening screen on 03.010 looks great though :)

Post by: Hawson on August 06, 2005, 10:55:39 pm
Try removing or renaming the \"pssound.so\" and \"pssound.csplugin\" files in the main Planeshift directory.

All people who are getting segfaults:

1. Remove from your destination directory EVERYTHING than art
2. Run the UPDATE installer.
3. Run the updater.
4. Remove pssound.* from Planeshift dir.

I am now contacting Talad to remove these files from the updater filelist
because this file is causing problems, it is being constantly replaced and the
right file is in your CS directory. There can be some other files causing
problems similar to flame01.tga but I think we will surely find them.

Regards.

Post by: davewb on August 07, 2005, 12:06:27 am
I\'ve sort of done what you suggested Platyna... I moved the old ~/planeshift dir out the way and made a new empty ~/planeshift directory and moved the /art folder into ~/planeshift.

I ran the installer and updater, removed pssound.*. psclient now starts up but there is no graphics, just text, and loads of \"could not open image file \'...\'\" and \"Not a JPEG file: starts with...\" errors.

For the record, I ran 0.3.010 fine before \"The Great Wipe\".

If you get crashes just after the first sound while starting up, check libpng. I had version 1.2.6rc1, and it crashed Planeshift. Upgrading to 1.2.8 fixed it.

Not a JPEG file...of course you have run the updater to update art?

someone in irc mentioned, that all the .csplugin- and .so-files have moved and you should delete them from your /planeshift/-dir. i did so and it works fine. i get some \"Not a JPEG\"-errors, but no severe graphic-errors so far.

The main issue I have besides not being able to run it because it never loads - no errror - just doesn\'t run.. is that the installer requires root privlidges.  I get utime: Operation not permitted errors.
Title:
Post by: Leeloo on August 07, 2005, 10:19:52 am
The installer absolutely does NOT require root privileges, I always run it as a normal user, with no problem.

Of course you need to install in a directory where you have permission to do so.

When it crashes without any error, that\'s probably a segfault. Let us know the last messages you see (at least four lines) before it dies, and tell if you see the load screen and/or hear the startup sound.

Yes I did run the Updater for the art.

I\'ll try to describe what I see a bit better: when I start psclient I get the main planeshift window but its all black except for the blue progress bar at the bottom which progresses as normal, and the intro music too.

The logon screen then appears, again all black except for the words. But when words are overtyped, eg deleting the initial account entry with mine, the cursor backspaces but leaves the text letters in place and my new typing overwrites it. Also the \"Welcome to Planeshift\" logo leaves a trail of itself as it drops until its faded away. The yellow mouse cursor also leaves a trail as it moves.

If I enter my account and \"OK\". and it goes to the character selection screen, the rotating character platform appears, but there is still no background graphics. If I go \"New Character\" and select the races, they pop up on the rotating platform as they should, but again no other graphical background. The text of the previous character select and logon screens have simply been overwritten, e.g. the screen title becomes a crazy jumble of \"Login\", \"Character Select\" and \"Character Creation\".

Err... Help...

Dave

Just delete pssound.so and pssound.csplugin from the main directory again. The updater thinks those files are needed.

The missing background problem is solved, it\'s not Linux-specific. You\'ll find the solution in \"Crystal Blue Problems/Bugs\", thread named \"black screens!!!!!!\"

Look for the post from Jorrit, it\'s two lines that need to be added to a config file.

First of all thanks to all who have posted solutions in this thread for various problems.  I now have my linux client up and running again, and can ditch the windows one again.  Big shout out to Platyna for getting the client out so quickly!

One problem, however:  Mouse look no longer works in the 3.11 release for me.  When I push tab ( or another key if I change the default mouselook key ) the arrow disappears like it should, but moving my mouse does not cause character movement.  The mouse works fine for selecting npcs, interacting with the windows and menus, etc., just not in mouse look mode.

This is something I can deal with if I have to, but it is rather annoying and if someone has a fix, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks again..
Bod

Well, most important in problems fixing is not panic. ;) Leeloo, as usual, is a big help. ;)
Soon I will relase a new packages for Linux that should contain all these fixes.
And about mouse look - it is generally broken in client code.

Well, current installer hierarchy looks as following:
art
data
cel - where the all CEL stuff is kept.
CS - where is all CS stuff, including all these csplugins
lib - where is cal3d and additional libraries kept.
and root where are config files and binaries...

was getting:
Error message: Uncompressing Planeshift Crystal Blue version 3.011....Extraction failed.

did the recommended:
1. Remove from your destination directory EVERYTHING other than art
2. Run the UPDATE installer.
3. Run the updater.
4. Remove pssound.* from Planeshift dir.

then started getting the black screen bug.  I did what was mentioned,  adding the following two lines to data/config/r3dopengl.cfg:
    Video.OpenGL.UseExtension.GL_ARB_texture_rectangle = false
    Video.OpenGL.UseExtension.GL_NV_texture_rectangle = false

that still hasn\'t fixed the black screens.  Two files were mentioned but I can\'t seem to figure out what other file you were talking about.  Little help please?

thank you guys so much.  I was getting nowhere installing this thing.

Editted:  i found two more things to do, am not sure which fixed it.  I went into planeshift.cfg and deleted the commented out line at the top with imagelist.xml on it, and moved the releaselist.xml one to the top.  I was also told to add same line to psclient.cfg
the second thing i did was add the above lines about Video.OpenGL to psclient.cfg.  There did happen to have a few options mentioning Video.OpenGL in there, so I put it above these.  Seems to work now

I\'m running Gentoo, I used the portage version of PS, copied the art to ~/planeshift, downloaded the updater.run thing, ran it, ran the updater, deleted pssound.*, ran psclient and got:

No iSoundManager plugin!
Failed to init app!
*crashes*

Help ?

Hmm, ISoundManager is pssound.so / pssound.csplugin. Check if it\'s really gone.

Just for verification--Esryn\'s tonic of workarounds worked for me!  :)  I did the initial steps, but was still getting \"black screens,\" missing window backgrounds, missing buttons, etc...This fixed them all!

/me takes off hat to EsRyn :)

Crashing right after radioon/radioff? Remove everything except the \"art\" folder. Run the installer again. Run the updater. Finally delete all .csplugin files (3 of them) from the main planeshift directory (they shouldn\'t be there, the ones that are used are in the CS subdirectory).

i tryed that, i ended up editing a few files here and there, and it started to work... it runs beautifully now, and i get 20-50fp/s in game now as opposed to windows which was 5-6fp/s for the most part

thanks!
