Title: Normal updater?
Post by: Pyros on August 09, 2005, 06:33:02 pm
Is there going to be a normal updater for mac rather than having to do all those instructions that Chaos gave?

No idea... I don\'t think anybody will know until dfryer finishes the client. But if you ask really nicely, maybe ChaOs will write a program that does it for you like he has done in the past.

It\'s not like those instructions are how to build a 25 storey building. :)

Just download the updater he provides a link to, use it to update. Download the set bits program, run it once. Download the starter program and use it to run the client.

well, last time i tried the java updater it screwed over planeshift so badly it wouldn\'t open at all. it wouldn\'t even be in the dock. thing is, i kinda skimmed the instructions... heh...
still, it\'d be nice to have a one-step updater.
oh, and just wondering, does the updater save time downloading? or does it just download the package again?

The one I use (Java app) updates only the files it needs to, so it\'s not a huge file every time. It also can stop and start up from the file you were at so if you have a slow connection you don\'t have to do it all in one session.

The reason why Chaos\'s updater has been used instead of the normal updater is that the normal updater has had problems when not started from the command line.  I think it was sorta-working in the last version and hopefully fully-working in this one.  Some things (like vfs.cfg) are prone to getting messed up, so I\'m hoping to get a clear resolution to that.

exactly what is a .cfg file?

on my comp it is displayed as a \"battlefield 1942\" file, and I can\'t imagine that means anything good for me.

I don\'t think the BF2 thing is an issue. You can just ignore it. Battlefield 2 probably just uses cfg files.

And, just because everyone\'s been asking, I made an all-in-one updater! I have not uploaded yet, as I have not had it tested. Once I get it tested I\'ll upload it and update the guide. It\'ll be double-clickable and handle everything for you. :)

I\'m thinking of packaging Cha0s\'s updater, since it\'s 32k instead of several megs, and seems to work all the time, instead of .. well, you get the picture.

If testing the PS upadter on Mac is not useful, I\'d gladly use an updater that is about 100 times smaller, faster, and more reliable :)

wondering about the java updater: how do i pause the download? does it simply stop when i close the program? also wondering: Cha0s\'s instructions said to select \"all files\"; is this smaller than downloading the package? or should I have selected \"indivudual zip entries\"?

thx

Thanks to dfryer\'s help, Individual zip entries is good now (as soon as I update the download, which will be when the update is released). So that will produce a smaller package to download (should take less time :) ). Update all files is needed between all major releases.

Ah. I was about to ask why when i ran the updater, it was version 0.3.010 still. Well, keep up the great work, I can\'t wait until 0.3.011 is released.

Glad to help out. Dfryer says the update will be released soon? (but he really means it, this time! :P ). Just be patient and it will be here, maybe with some special little goodies if you\'re lucky.

He might be referring to my shot at packaging pssetup, which should launch now.  Be aware that not all the options are tested - fullscreen might work, but then again, it might be dodgy.

Feel free to run the updater (either the standard PS one or the Cha0s\'s java updater) and grab new mac binaries!

We now also have the correct vfs.cfg file in the repository, which is a huge bonus :)

Yes, which is why you had an additional step in the guide... Oh, that reminds me... *goes to update the guide*
