Title: Language restrictions?
Post by: valoun on October 04, 2002, 02:01:30 pm
Are you going to restrict the language used in PlaneShift, or not? I don\'t mean rude words, but: Will be french people allowed to speak french between themselves - Will I be allowed to speak czech If I found anyone speaking czech?

\" Are you going to restrict the language used in PlaneShift, or not? \"

Well, to make it short I\'ll just say : \'Doubt it\' :D

Of course!  It would be a very difficult thing to try and restrict the chat to one language.  :)  The only thing is that NPC\'s will only understand English.

It may be possible in the future to make them understand different languages.

although i hope players will \'respect\'their language usage. Restricting some words would still be needed, cause there will always be players who will use \'wrong\' words.
I hope players will think twice before they use some words...lets stay in the role playing :)

I just hope that they dev team is going to use a good system  (not like one as in runescape, wich blockes almost all weird languages)..

We are not planning on byte filtering in PS, so foreign languages should display *something*, although it may be garbage if our game font does not have your letters or accents.

Having played with very good players at times who were Koreans, and who spoke almost zero English, I definitely think we need a rudimentary chat translation system in the game.  I am not talking about supporting deep conversations, but just enough to group effectively, etc.  One of these days I will sit down and write such a thing, but we have many tasks still on MolecularBlue to work on first.  :-)

What about modelling a real world? Everyone speaks the language he knows. Less important NPC\'s would speak the language of their creator (mostly English) - like in the real world.

Good chance for a guild of translators, isn\'t it :-)
It might be fun. Especially the misunderstandings in a pub, for example.

Not a problem really. Czech can do well without any accents. Many apps (if from M$ Windoze) have problems with czech accents (mostly web & email, because we use about 3 or 4 different encodings - ISO8859-2, CP1250, Kamenicti, PC-Latin etc.)

Japanese or chinese people have far more difficulties i think.
