First, I just got done downloading the program about 4 hours ago.
I am using:
Planeshift CB 0.3.011
MD5SUM for PlaneShift_CBV0.3.011.exe:
fc36e88c174f44f7540f130782afcfbb *PlaneShift_CBV0.3.011.exe
PIII 1.6Ghz (AMD Athlon XP 2000)
224Mb RAM
S3 Graphics ProSavageDDR 32Mb
Windows XP Pro SP2
After installing the game, I let it run UPDATER.EXE and it downloads the registry and then a new version of the updater. Once that completes, it restarts and downloads the registry and then states \"CHECKING FOR UPDATES... THIS MAY TAKE A WHILE.\" And then nothing happens. Through the updater, I can ping the server, average response of 395ms, but I left the updater sitting for 40 minutes and no change.
I\'ve done this 3 or 4 times, once immediately after the initial install. I then uninstalled it, rebooted, reinstalled it and tried just running the game without running the updater with the following result:
\"SCF_WARNING: factory returned a null instance for crystalspace.kernel.vfs
if error messages are not self explanatory, recompile CS with CS_DEBUG
WARNING: could not load plugin \'crystalspace.kernel.vfs\'
Couldn\'t load VFS plugin \"crystalspace.kernel.vfs\"!
ERROR: csInitializer::SetupConfigManager failed!
Is your CRYSTAL environment variable set?
Exiting Planeshift. Press Enter...\"
Uninstalled everything, deleted all directories, rebooted, reinstalled, rebooted again, ran updater with the same results.
Last, I tried going through the command window, using \"UPDATER --AUTO\", to which I get the following results:
Couldn\'t unmount temporary VFS path (art/world/npcroom.zip)!
Couldn\'t unmount temporary VFS path (art/world/podium.zip)!
Couldn\'t unmount temporary VFS path (art/world/akkaio.zip)!
Couldn\'t unmount temporary VFS path (art/world/arena.zip)! <-- sits and scrolls this one for a long time
Couldn\'t unmount temporary VFS path (art/world/sewers.zip)!
Plus more that I didn\'t sit here and cut & paste.
I\'ve at my wits end trying to troubleshoot this, and nothing I read in your forums or FAQ explains how to possibly remedy this problem. Is it just me, my system, or what?

Well firstly, your computer is going to really suck at this game :\\
Secondly, what you might have to do is get a new updater. Your download was probably invalid. Did you get it from Bittorrent? If you did, try the main site downloads. If you used the main site downloads, use bittorrent. After you done downloading it, uninstall, delete, remove all traces of PS cb 3.0.11 and then reinstall. If this doesnt work your gonna need one of the programmers to help you :(
-
I\'ve got exactly the same problem since today!
I play this for 2-3weeks without problems and today, i launch updater, it downloaded someting, then restart and... doesn\'t move! And I can\'t play PS anymore!
Is there a solution? I don\'t want to re-download the whole game!
thx
EDIT : updater.exe takes 99% CPU... Boinc has no ressources anymore :s

I don\'t think so, but it\'s always possible :P

I forgot to mention that fact in my original post in my endeavor to be as detailed as possible... I\'ve downloaded the install from the main server, the mirror server, as well as the BitTorrent and it does not matter which I use to install from, I get the same errors everytime.

After some further digging and research, the reason it cannot unmount VFS paths is due to that there isn\'t a VFS file anywhere in the files that are installed... I read through PSCLIENT.CFG and my system does not have the VFS file listed there.
System.PlugIns.iVFS = crystalspace.kernel.vfs
Also, if I am reading the VFS.CFG file comments correctly it is attempting to assign unix style paths on a windows file system.
Eg.:
art/world/sewers.zip <--- unix style
art\\world\\sewers.zip <--- windows style
If I am in error here, I appologize, I am just trying to provide as in depth of a report of what my problem is as to hopefully find a resolution for myself and others.

The updater is screwed up at the moment..Im guessing that the devs already know this and are working quickly to repair..so if you havnt updated already dont.
-
Too late.
Anyone have a clue on ETA of a fix?

Been talking with Talad... nope... no clue
-
this is weird cause last night it was working perfectly for me except i couldnt enter hydlaa...I wonder if that has anything to do with this?
-
They were updating the windows client to a new version, and something went wrong. Just be patient...
-
Mhm I let the updater working alone during some hours and now... it says update complete!
I\'ll try the game ;)
EDIT : It\'s working ;)
-
And I had to test it myself to see if there was related to some strange config of the user\'s system... :D
Of course the error is general
-
I tried to update cause you said its fixed....My updator gets to 100% it says this may take a while and so far nothing is happening
-
AND NOW I GET THE SAME ERROR!!!!Nothing has fixed
-
ok im really pissed off now
i jus got this game yesterday and it already wont let me get into it

I have the same warning.....I wouldnt of gotten it if those 2 guys didnt say it was fixed....Now im probly gonna have to Re-install and the first time i did that it took well over an hour >:(

Word of advice, Eggnogster: Your first post should not be to whine...
The updater is still quite broke, just be patient.
EDIT:
Don\'t reinstall. Just wait for the thing to be fixed. Besides, the updater is smarter than you think. Delete any file/folder and it\'ll re-get it. (aka, partial reinstall) But, since is searches for all changes from the norm on update, you don\'t have to do anything but run the updater, when it\'s working right.
-
If you have the time to spend, you can safely update now. It will not look like it is doing anything for a long time, but eventually everything will be updated.

That is incorrect, the VFS system uses \"unix style\".
-
so now the updater is broken.
if they fix the updater problem how are we going to update it?
-
The updater is not broken, it just takes around an hour before it finds what is looking for. You can use the updater(recovery mode) version if you want to see some output while it does that. Either one should work properly, it will just take an hour or more of waiting.
This update fixes some crashes, as well as the constant bugs withe getting stuck.
-
great. without your help, i would probably never waited one hour to get it. thanks.
i updated succesfully.

It will. PS needs MINIMUM 385Megs ram to run nicely. 512 is recommended. With less then 256 it will crawl.

Disabled Zap and screeensaver, and it worked at last.
Many thanks.
My only disappointment, is that I still wait for mouse look to function from the mouse...

If you have still troubles try to download http://www.planeshift.it/download/temp/vfs.dll if I remember the link right.
-
The current updater takes longer to locate files in the default working folder, than it takes to search half a Terabyte for a hash match.
Most of the time that the updater is running, there is no hard drive activity at all.
Not to be rude, and I am grateful for all the hard work, but why is it that everything that has recently been compiled for Windows, including game, updater and setup, constantly uses 100% CPU?
No matter how bad the optimization, there is something very wrong with that.

Run the updater (without the new vfs.dll) in text mode (stick -auto on) and you\'ll see 50 minutes or so of VFS unmount errors... That whole time it\'s doing nothing but putting much effort into glitching. :P
-
My Updater has an error when it starts trying to update..
it says...
uodater has an error and needs to close...
-
How descriptive errors can be........
Run the updater in \"recovery mode\" or whatever it\'s called. (use the link in the start menu, or run the updater with \"-auto\" stuck on the end of the command) Tell me what errors it gets.
-
As of now, the current incarnation of the updater behaves properly, does not attempt to apply unix to windows, and no longer uses all available CPU under WinXP.
My heartfelt thanks to the Devs for the corrections.
I wonder however, is it necessary for all additions to a zip be synched individually?
Surely it would save a tremendous amount of time updating, If all files were downloaded to a temp folder first, and then synched all at once?
As it stands, a single Zip in art/world/cache/ was opened and synched over a hundred times, when once would have sufficed...

From updaterconfig.xml:
0
100
50
The updater can already do exactly what you want. :) You can tell it how much of the zip needs to be changed to just get the whole file, or change the whole_zips option to 1 to force it for all. Just edit the file, and write-protect the thing to prevent it from being undone. :P (leave the middle setting alone)
-
Well I accidentally ran the updater while the game was running, it updated the updater and completely screwed up. Then it game me those unmount errors.
I just extracted updater.zip into the planeshift folder, overwriting all files, and it fixed ans worked perfectly. I didn\'t have to wait either.
