Well, I was bored so I downloaded Wings3D and Blender and started experimenting. This is the first thing I managed to build in Wings...

It\'s rather large (about 500 polygons), but it is the first thing I\'ve made... so, what does everyone think? Am I headed in the right direction for basic 3D images? Incidentaly I\'m not entirely certain exactly what it is but... :rolleyes:

Like I said before, I\'m not entirely sure what to call it. I think a scepter is the best word I\'ve come up with. It wasn\'t what I set out to create, but my plans where changed part way through by curiosity. It almost looks kinda evil...

hi, 500 polygons it\'s too much (my opinion).
training yourself to make some basics swords, shields, axes
I don\'t know Wings3D so i can\'t help you. But try to make a basic axe to start (I think axe it\'s more easy than a sword)

For a first attempt, it\'s good I guess. It\'s no masterpiece of course :) Keep in mind that most weapon/accessoriy models shold be around 100-200 TRIANGlES (three sided polygons). If you want to get good really fast, I advise you to read some good basic tutorials and have fun with your modelling app.

If I was trying to make a masterpiece I would have made something I could recognize... :P I\'m taking Konogan\'s advice and trying a hatchet now... And was the definition of \"triangle\" really neccessary? 8)

I\'m not really sure, but I think all 3D sofware works with triangles
for example, if I draw a cube with 6 faces, I got 12 faces in facts:

another tips (i have in mind actualy (http://planeshift.oodlz.com/wbboard/images/smilies/tongue.gif)) : one of your enemies is cylinder. For a weapon, never make a cylinder with more than 5 faces

Ok. I\'ll keep that in mind. I\'m hoping that I can get good at this for school, to make my projects for Communications look good, and if I actually make something good, so much the better... so if you don\'t mind, could you critique these as well?
I\'m trying to get used to the program as quickly as I can in order to practice on my own, but I don\'t want to practice stuff that isn\'t realistic as far as use goes.
PS. I appologize for the cylinder in the hatchet handle.

BTW, in the sword is 38 triangles, and the hatchet is 80

I\'d actually start by not making things on your own. Scrounge up all the tutorials you can find and do them. Do them all twice. You need to learn your app before you can start making cool stuff. That will also give you a broader background since there is so much out there, and making in-game models for PS only requires a relatively small amount of it. Wings3d is a good starting point, you can learn basic modeling techniques, but to get anything really substantial you will need something a bit more powerful methinks (at least for uv mapping and, if needed, animating).

I\'m agree with him, make a lot of tut, and before to try to make a weapon try a basic thing like a chest, for example :

chest isn\'t hard to modeler, not too hard to uv mapping

I\'m working my way through a Wikibook about Blender right now, and just playing with Wings when I can\'t learn anymore, or when I get horribly confusd and need to step away. Once I get good(If it takes me 20 years, I\'ll still do it), you\'ll be seeing more of me.

Actually, animation is basically a completely different task. You can spend as much time, or more, learning to animate properly as you can learning to make and texture models properly. It is also generally more tedious and generally conceived as less rewarding because an animation usually only gets noticed if it is bad. I\'ve got some links to rigging and animating tuts if anyone wants them, but rigging is confusing, and can be a nightmare on a model that isn\'t built properly.

I wouldnt say your chest is a good example for a young modeler ^^
The planks have difrent size on each side and and its not mapped correctly. It looks like you did the texture first and then the model. Id say its better to draw the texture upon the UV map, so that all things are proportional. Dont make black edges, white is better. Edges are actualy brighter and reflect more light.

about the box model: i think he was trying to say \"try some shapes\".
Not a good example though, that model is done in 2 seconds (cube - scale - extrude - scale - done).
I\'ve seen some really cool blender tutorials on their homepage, you should check it out.
Texturing a model is a whole new ball game.

your last image is made with blender, with NURBS
i dont know if wings3d can do that without subsurf...

my chest is an old version, It\'s the first model I did (for a Rubbies Of Eventyde mod (never realesed) ^^) several months ago...
