ok i know you have gotten far into making this game and that this idea would be really hard to use now but this would be awesome.
how about having a server for each time zone? the time in the game would be the time in the time zone this would be much easier for quests that you can only get/do at a certain time and much much easier for quests that require more than one person
-
why?
and what the hell is the point of it being an MMORPG where people from all over the world come to meet :|
-
Dem is right, not to mention PS is always going to be free and they have to pay for the servers, i dont think they would be too keen to add more cost only on themselves.
-
yeah... plus it would be difficult for players as well
Sekhemet tells: Hey! Want to meet for an ale?
Other Player tells: Hiya! Sure! Be there in a few!
....time passes....
Sekhemet tells: I\'m at the Tavern. Got hung up somewhere?
Other Player tells: No, I\'m at the Tavern, too. Where are you?
Sekhemet mutters something about having to switch servers and the long loading and the *trails off*....

Bad idea. So players who can only log on at night will only get to see night? So you are also recommending a 24-hour time period within the game. This isn\'t going to work, at all. Also it has already been officially decided that PlaneShift is not going to be split up into separate servers that will divide the world.
Next time, too, I would suggest a more descriptive thread title ;)

a day night cicle is already there, i dont know where you are complaining about..

I completely fail to see the supposed \"awesomeness\" in this idea. The only things that would be different are:
1) Day / night time would correlate to the timezone. This would be stupid IMNSHO, because this way a lot of people will never get to play during certain PS daytimes. Sure, they could change servers, but that would be not good.
2) Community split up into timezone dependant chunks for no reason and with no benefit at all. This would be pretty much the same as nationality based servers. Even if this would be avoided, the consistency would be severely broken. Example:
Char 1 (on timezone 1: GMT: 0 AM): I hate having to wander the streets at this time, the darkness scares me.
Char 2 (on timezone 2: GMT+12: noon) What are you talking about, the scourching light of the crystal makes my eyes hurt!
All in all, this is the worst justification for multiple servers that I have seen brought up yet, as it only adds deficiencies but no perks.

I thinkit is a so-so idea...I have played a game called RuneScape, that had several servers...and they worked out fine...I think Planeshift should do a beta testing to see how ot would work....If it doesn\'t then don\'t do it...But, I also though about this just now...Some people in the world have really, really rrrreeeeaaaaallllllyyyyy slow processors...And when they switch form server to server...It may take awhile...A lllllllllllllooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnggggggg wwwwwwwhhhhhhhhiiiiiiiillllleeeeeeeeee...
I think it is a good idea though...

Hmmm.... let me think .... Nooooooo. I don\'t think so.
First it would result in higher costs for the multiple servers. On the other hand I don\'t like the idea of switching servers just in order to be able to meet somebody from my guild, because he/she lives in another time zone. That would cause a lot of confusion, if everyone is on a different sever. Nobody needs that.

I don\'t think the in game 24 hour cycle should be rl 24 hours. Just because as said before you\'d end up with people from different time zones always playing during the night or always during the day, etc..
So basically multiple in game 24 hour cycles per real life day is the best bet I think. In fact, I like to see maybe 24 cycles every real life hour.

Servers are sponsored, and there will eventually be multiple servers. However, these will be linked to seamlessly transition. The PS team wants one single, consistent game world, and I second that.

This has been discussed in great length. The conclusion was that a 1:1 correlation is not desirable, but the length of the actual intervals hasn\'t been agreed on. I still think the intervals must be longer than they are ATM, like having one 24 hour cycle ingame every 5 RL hours only. That way, the ingame times will drift and everyone can experience all times, while times remain reasonably long to seem realistic. ATM ingame daytime is more an ambient property like RL weather than a felt time to me.
