Title: Dragons Head
Post by: Malloc on August 27, 2005, 03:34:39 am
Was hoping to maybe contiribute a few things to PS, but I\'m not sure I can get the poly count low enough. And I thought 1000k was  low.  This is recent work I\'ve been doing on a dragons head. Just finished up the detail work last night. Will likely texture it when I\'ve time.

in case you didnt read, and disregarded the site and players guide.... THERE WILL BE NO DRAGONS

Very nice work though. the poly count is insanely high anyways.

That is an insane amount of polys. Absolutely gorgeous, though! You haven\'t posted what program you have used, however.

Lovely job :)

This wasn\'t for submission, and certainly wouldn\'t have brought it to that level of detail without knowing the poly restrictions. I just thought I\'d share, as it was fantasy related.  Models of that level would mainly be used as normal maps for lower res  models to increase the visual details without the geometry. That was all done in Zbrush, but I use Autocad for most things, as that\'s what I use for work. (Technical illustrations for aviation tech pubs). I\'m also quite fond of Photoshop, and use that for 2d work.

I like the idea behind PS, and the dedication the teams got. I\'ll explore it a bit more, as I\'m new to the community. I am interested in helping out, but I\'ll test the waters for a bit and see if I even have something to offer that\'s usable.

I thought it looked like Zbrush :) What inspiration this is - I really want to give it another try now. If you have more of your work uploaded somewhere, I would really love to view it.

Wow thats a really reallly really high # of polys. You might wanna work on lowering em a bit without losing so much quality. :)

Great work either way though.

Absolutely gorgeous! Even thogh the pixel count\'s way high and there are no dragons in game, it\'s still a testament to your skill. Please post more, or give us a link if you have more work online.

About joining the team... take the time and think it over. You\'d be a welcome addition, if this is any indication.

we keep poly\'s pretty low and let the 2d textures do the detail ;) if oyu got as much skill in 2d as this, you\'ll be like... teh awesomest evar \\o/

Well, I don\'t have a huge ammount of stuff to show, but here\'s some misc stuff. Mostly 2d.

I didn\'t do the line art in this one, only the colors. Jay Anacleto did the pencils.
Elric (http://img383.imageshack.us/my.php?image=elrictanned29pe.jpg)

Skra Mur from Dragonrealms, character sketch.
Aus (http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/4800/skramur3xb.jpg)

A goblin concept I worked on for another game (before it whent under), and I ended up using it as my avatar when I was a GM for Eaxia.com.
Varkaz (http://img374.imageshack.us/img374/4928/varkazavatar7ml.jpg)

Tower I had done for practice. Landscapes, etc quickly done in Vue. Turned out to have far too much detail, though the poly count wastn\'t all that high for it\'s size.
Tower (http://img394.imageshack.us/my.php?image=toweronshore26jd.jpg)

Last one, messing around with an alien design.

I\'d love to see the pencil work on the 2d elric pic, I have a feeling you \'cleaned\' it alot when coloring.

I apriciate all the compliments. The artwork I\'ve seen in both the game and the site are pretty top notch. Shows a lot of time and effort have gone into the game so far. (If I could only find my way out of a city to explore a little, I might get to actually see more of it.)

I need a map and mouselook(toggleable)....

sorry I didnt get to this thread earlier.  Your dragon head is awesome.  Have you finished the whole dragon?  or are you working on it  ?(

The head is just practice, getting used to the software and tools. I hadn\'t planned on creating a body to go with it. More than likely, I\'ll move on to another model when done adding the color.

Started working on the color today, and still have a ways to go. Head is still looking somewhat monochromatic at this stage.

Zbrush isn\'t exactly a 3D program ;) More like a 3D painter. I believe there exist a few converters into actual 3D models, but I am not sure if they are 3dsmax compatible. I remember another artist posted his Zbrush work here before. This (http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=11591&boardid=22) was it, I believe. Radiolarian (http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=9345&boardid=22) also had the most amazing Zbrushed images of a Kran I had ever seen, though the pictures are down now. I believe the only coverters that exist may be for Blender.

But I\'m not sure :)

Zbrush is used for modling in conjunction with quite a few other applications. Mostly used for refinement of base models, but it\'s capable of creating any number of models, compatable with Lightwave, 3ds Max, maya, XSI, Lightwave, you name it. Can output in a number of formats, create meshes as tri or quads, can create bump maps, normal maps, displacement maps, color maps.... Was used in quite a few films including Lord of the Rings, and several others. Does wonders with details, however it\'s best used with out programs for composition. Still getting used to it, as you\'ve said it\'s not like most apps.

My head just exploded from the awesomeness. Really, I don\'t know what to say. It\'s inspiring to say the least.

Decided I\'m done with the head, and it\'s time to move on to something else. Didn\'t model anything else, just took the first pose from the previous post (which I liked best) and painted in the rest with photoshop.

Nice work.  I\'ve only touched zbrush a tiny bit, but I\'ve got a gnomon dvd on it, as well as a couple normal mapping tutorials for max that use it.  It is very widely used for exactly that purpose (on top of it\'s use in movies, etc.).  From what I can tell it isn\'t quite as hard as it looks, but, regardless, that dragon head is still awesome.  Kudos.

That is absolutely stunning, and I don\'t know what to say other than...well...you don\'t happen to be working for Bethesda Softworks do you? The 3d-graphics are Oblivion-division, and your 2d-work is...umm...quite good, nice, fantastic, amazing, OUTSTANDING.

I\'m really impressed, and I\'m sure the developers share that thought.  :)

I\'ve got quite a few gnomon dvds, love that stuff. Prefer the analog dvds, and there\'s still quite a few on my wishlist. In fact, I finished up the dragon after watching one of Neville Pages dvds and it inspired me to just paint in the rest and mess around with it.

I only wish I could do this sort of thing for a living. What I do is far more sterile and uncreative. It pays the bills though.

Great stuff, Malloc. But how about modeling something out of PlaneShift? For example, how about a gorgeous Xacha or Lemur female? Go as high poly as you want. It would be great to use for a wallpaper of sorts or to replace the low-res artwork we have for each race on the main site. :)
