Title: Planeshift Girls
Post by: Kim on August 31, 2005, 03:13:47 am
Inspired by Valbrandr\'s \'Personal Ads\' post, I figured I\'d try my hand at drawing up the females of the various races in game. I\'ll keep adding as they\'re finished and hopefully help the other girls steal some attention from the fenkis!

The Xacha should probably be more green/azure, but then I felt she looked too Lemurish. A lot of the race differences depend on coloring, but that could just be my mistake. I\'ll take it into consideration next time.

I also apologize for lamely drawing everyone from the waist up. :D

Good work.

Wow I just noticed how insanly long the xachas neck is...

Thanks all.

Steuben - Cat girls are insanely hard to beat, but I figured the others needed a fighting chance. I do draw my enkis more catlike than human, so maybe that\'ll effect the outcome.

Karyuu - Here\'s my DeviantArt gallery (http://sinyx.deviantart.com/) and website (http://www.tripshotpress.com/).

Efflixi - I\'m realizing I tend to draw long necks. The population must be interbreeding with giraffes or something. The feedback\'s welcome though. It points out the mistakes I tend to overlook.

Whoa! Absolutely awesome!

Your visual style, I agree, looks very Disney like. I love the kind of mix between real life and cartoon.

Keep \'em coming :D

Post by: Kim on August 31, 2005, 09:38:53 pm
Thanks again everyone. I\'m an animation gal myself, so I suppose it\'s a big influence on my style. I\'ll keep them coming, and hopefully be able to get to the males afterward, or think up some new PS creatures. I\'d like to help with the game eventually, but I don\'t think I have much of a portfoilio for concept art yet. I\'ll have to do some work first to get stuff together.

Kainen, don\'t you dare stop drawing! Progress just takes years of practice and there\'s always new stuff to learn. It\'s a lifelong learning experience. I know people whose art makes me weep.

Drey, can you see everything now? If not, I\'d send you the link. Lordbug, pass it by me. If I can find some extra time between work I might be able to sketch something up. Here\'s the next batch...

This is the first time I\'ve drawn dwarves and I tried not to make them the trolls all you dwarf men keep complaining about. Poor little dwarvettes. I bet they\'re tons of fun at the tarvern. This Diaboli is obviously not a warrior. I imagine her as an entertainer myself, possibly a dancer for less family orientated establishments? :D

It\'s not necessarily a Disney style ;) It\'s a general animation style. The clean, soft lines and shapes are easy to adapt for movement.

Ha ha, no. Most of the guys who work at Disney (and Pixar, or feature film studios in general!) are beyond amazing. I would have to draw my butt off to even begin to get near the skill those guys have.

I do work in television animation though.

Very good art, indeed. Amazing.

I\'d like to see the models at full although, specially the dermorian one.
(Yes, I\'ve a problem with my own char, what kind of thing should he wear on feet, if any... Looking for ideas :D)

Try to contact George Lucas, now he\'s on animation, perhaps he wants to make another trilogy with cartoons ;)

And, just a question:

Has anyone considered going back to the 2d game idea? :P

But curse me, shouldn\'t the Hammerweilder be holding the hammer? :P

Ahh.. the diaboli is awesome :D I think she looks more like a mage :D
Title:
Post by: Kim on September 01, 2005, 03:06:23 pm
Thanks for pointing that out GeorgeD, I fixed it now.

Cool! All I wanted was a level playing field for these ladies, so now the attraction is about personal preferences and not \'All so and so\'s are ugly!\'.

The only design I didn\'t draw was the Kran, since I thought there wasn\'t a real male/female difference in the race and since they seem more masculine I was going to graw him if I got around to guys. I think I got this silly idea from the character creation in the game. Correct me if I\'m wrong.

Nilrem - No feet is a real cop out, I know. It\'s just there\'s so many races and so little time. Gah. Planeshift used to be 2d?

Drey - Is there a problem if you start a thread? Because you\'re a GM?

Neryam - You\'re a trouble maker aren\'t you? ;)
The last time I used a 3D program was college. I don\'t know how I passed because my teacher hardly spoke english and I had no idea what he was teaching. I tried making a skin, but no matter how I try to zip up my new art files (I\'m following directions!), it won\'t work. Maybe it\'s because I\'m on a mac. There\'s no creation guide for that.

Siamese type fenki, cause I\'ve never heard of one. The immense possibilities of all the cat color patterns I could paint is overwhelming! Also, I\'ve seen a few descriptions of Enkidukai with tattoos. Considering they have fur, I don\'t think it\'s possible. Fur dying would be, but wouldn\'t last. If they want something permanant, I think Enkis would have to be super badass and be branded.

Are the Krylos gender different or are they like the Kran (Who I bet I\'m wrong about in the first place)? And a Ynnwn, whose size cannot be expressed without a lineup. I just imagine these gals as beefy butt kickers. She\'s a smith of sorts. Now that I look at her again, I think she could be more muscled.

utterly fantastic kim, overwhelmed with it,

You\'re right by the Kran being genderless, they all look the same, they look male, which sucks if they\'re \'genderless\' i would liek to see you attempt a feminine one ^^

Klyros have males and females, no ones ever drawn a female ever, and this looks pretty good, they build of her is pretty much awesome, as they glide they need to be light ^^

don\'t let the art hungry people push you into doiugn the males xD

there\'s no reason why Drey can\'t put up an art thread, I\'d actually find it very amusing seeing how he draws planeshift things, \'in the eyes of Drey\'

i think the first set rule was that of you have to be better then acraig, i think Drey just about passes that :D
Title:
Post by: GeorgeD on September 01, 2005, 04:39:18 pm
Wow, they are all pretty good. The Klyros (! yes, another typo..) one looks interesting, nice touch with those earrings.. headrings..finrings..whatever.
Fenki looks great, but they always do. Without the human-like hair on her head, she fits the PS design nicely.

They all seem to be in a cheerful mood, so what\'s with that Dermorian any_last_words? look? Not that I\'m complaining, she\'s cute anyway.
On the other hand, Fenki is smiling and holding a blade, which does not necessarily mean a good thing either. :P

Seeing them all side by side in one picture, complete figures as if posing for a group photo, that would be interesting too. People could see the proportions more easily.
Maybe you could try various clothes and armor designs?

Keep up the good work!

@%! Why can\'t I spell?! Actually, I should just stop doing these at 3AM. that might help.

Group posing would definately be better for size comparison. An actual scene would be even better than that, as it could establish a story. While coloring, I really felt like I should have thought more about their costumes. It would be great if every race had their own sort of traditional dress, jewelry, or way they groom their hair. That moves into culture building, which I find particulary interesting.

That Dermorian and Fenki can\'t be trusted. I pictured the Dermorian on the hunt, peeking through some underbrush, but I think the Fenki may just be trying to intimidate you.

Hey, Kim

Amazing work! Beautiful! It\'s about time someone did this, as I was getting tired of endless Enki drawings. My favorites so far are both elven girls, and also Lemur. The rest are nice too. I\'m actually hoping that Xacha women will turn out to be beautiful in the game. But shouldn\'t Xacha have a pale greyish skin color, as in concept art on the main site?

Also, sorry to be the first one to criticize anything at all but the only drawing I\'m not too fond of is Diaboli. The neck-to-shoulder transition is a bit too thick for my taste. I\'ve always pictured Diaboli women looking something like Elizabeth Hurley in Bedazzled, perhaps. ;)

Oh, one other thing is that Nolthrir female seems to have her gills on her cheeks in your drawing but on the conceprt art they\'re on her neck.

But that\'s just IMO. It\'s your style, your expression.

Other than that, simply amazing! :)

First I, too, think that the Klyros fits pretty well. However, where did you get the \"Noone ever drew a female Klyros\" from? I know of at least four female Klyros drawings:

Here (http://img97.exs.cx/img97/4613/klyros_f.jpg), here (http://img113.exs.cx/img113/748/seytra2cx.jpg), here (http://img222.exs.cx/img222/3262/netrhystanhren5ii.jpg) and here (http://upl.silentwhisper.net/uplfolders/upload1/snakey_012.jpg).

As a general comment: I think the faces of the comparatively human races look deformed somehow, but otherwise it\'s really nice!

Utterly beautiful work, Lady Kim. I like them very much, though my tastes run more to the side of realism. Brilliant choice on the Siamese coloring for your Fenki. :D

But? and this goes to all the artists out there, not just you? why does everyone insist on drawing Diaboli with red skin? They are clearly described as having oil-black skin. Which, with proper lighting would give a deep purple or blue hue to their skin, never red. Could you try doing a Diaboli with these colors? This is not a rant, sorry if it seems that way.  :)

I just care very much for the Diaboli race, do to their importance in my story.

Yes my friend. :) To quote:

From the Races page on the main site:
The typical Diabolo has shiny oil-black skin, a thin pointed tail and little horns. Apart from that, they have almost the same body proportions as humans, and almost identical internal organs. Both male and female have gorgeous, perfectly shaped bodies.

That pic is either atypical, misleading, or wrong. Also note that the Dermorians are described as having \'rarely blond\' hair, yet guess what color the example has.  ;)

Actually, I\'m a bit confused about that myself and wondered what to do with her skin. There\'s some conflicting info in the race descriptions, images on the pages, and the models in game and this is not just with the Diaboli.

One of the reasons I kept her reddish was technical. The way I had used my levels in photoshop made any darker tone I put on her look strange and overpowered the pencil. I had a few set on overlay and multiply, so I could use that kraft paper as a background (these sketches are actually done in a regular sketchbook). I\'m still getting the hand of digital coloring since I\'m more of a real media person. This will possibly make no sense too you. Sorry.

Essentiallly, I\'ll keep this all in mind for the future. I really think this game is awesome and love playing around with ideas for it. Everything I drew is not set in stone for me and comments/critiques are welcome. It\'s more conceptual on my part and the first time I\'ve drawn these guys, so expect ideas to evolve.

Realism rants? Don\'t worry, it\'s expected. People all have their own picture in their heads of how the characters look. It\'s natural. Plus, these are cartoony and I\'m used to how most people react to that. Animation and comic styles are usually not given the same reaction as something more realistic.

Kainen - That might be difficult, considering I\'m a girl. Unless your up for some scientific interference. :D

I have no new Planeshift art done for now, as I have other projects also. People have asked for armour and such, which I don\'t usually draw (being more interested in characters and creatures) but I\'ll try eventually. This project is a good chance for me to start drawing things I don\'t normally do! I\'ll post as soon as I have more.

I think they actually do... The problem is not all race-cities are implemented so we can\'t really tell their architecture, traditions and stuff...
It\'s very boring when the devs just put everything written.. I hate that :P
It would be better if players could write stuff about whatever they wanted *sigh* *hopes the devs ever read this*

Hello Kim!

Very beautiful fan art and nice initiative. You\'ve certainly done the background research well, especially if this is the first time you\'re drawing PS races. Not only have you pictured the physical appearance, but also the mental side, personality.

I especially like the colouring on Nolthrir, Enkidukai and Klyros. The little details also caught my eye; Nolthrir gills, Ynnwn not using gold jewelry...

The Klyros head crest orientation is the only thing that you may want to note. In PS it runs from the (top)end of the spine to forehead. Now it makes the miss Klyros look a bit \"draconic\" and less \"fishy\".

All in all, admirable work and adorable girls. :)

*Cherppow thinks Xacha lady looks very sweet, and gives her a smile before going on with his work.*

Thanks,

Speaking of these: I have always wondered where the Klyros\' gills are. Personally, I\'d have put them beneath the big scales on their belly, which would enable them to be protected from dust when not in water. Another option is to have them at the throat. Having them where they are located at the Nolthrir doesn\'t look feasible to me, because there are the bones of the jaws, and also it would mean that the water has to be pumped through the throat to reach the actual gills, because the head doesn\'t provide room for them.

I think gills will take up a similar space as do lungs, so I imagine a shared system, in which gills can function in air by
1) keeping the gills themselves wet
2) filtering the air through the nose, possibly even piping the air through a little reservoir of water that circulates in the gills. A small quantity of water may suffice, which would not add to weight significantly.

This would apply to all races with gilled and pulmonary respiration, but not the Kran, for their different though as of yet unrevealed breathing apparatus.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. Sorry I haven\'t had time for anything new lately.

More like a fish\'s dorsal fins then? In a straight line down to the spine?

Both great ideas that I\'m going to have to keep in mind for future artwork, along with all the other notes. The anatomy of the gilled creatures is a bit tricky to work out, but I like how you\'re thinking it out Seytra. The neck area is more plausible, but the side positioning may work best for both Nolthrir and Klyros (I wasn\'t even aware they had gills until now!). It\'s little stuff like this that can easily slip my mind and I\'m glad you guys can catch it. Thank you!

Indeed. While the race picture from the settings page doesn\'t clearly show it, whereas the model (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v490/Seytra/Planeshift/klyroshead.png) does.

You\'re welcome. :) Strictly, the race description only says \"Breath underwater\" for the Klyros, but it does so also for the Nolthrir, which is why I figure that they\'ll use a similar system as the Nolthrir, which are described to have \"both gilled and pulmonary respiration\" in the Physical Traits section. Kran, OTOH and as I said, are an entirely different matter. :)

Edit: changed image to link.

Ive just brought Poser 6 and have started the huge task of recreating my charater.

These are of course early stages... and only the head is avalibe for example.  She needs longer hair at the back and im not sure about the exact colour of her skin, lips and eyes.
