Is this game worth giving a try. i need a WoW substitute since my computer is a complete crap frest and waiting to get a new one. Will this game do for now?

Greetings,
This is a pre-alpha tech demo still in the very early stages of development. There are graphical errors, bugs, a few server downtimes, but a very dedicated and RP-oriented community. If you think you can handle that, then welcome! :) If not, another free MMORPG may be your best bet. PlaneShift can also be very demanding on your computer setup.
-
In all honesty, I\'m not sure I can recommend PlaneShift as a game that will \"do for now\". PS works best as a Role-Playing game, and to RP well tends to take a fair amount of time and effort. On top of that, the game is in pre-alpha, as Karyuu mentioned, so there are a number of areas in which it might seem inferior to a completed commercial game like WoW.
That being said, please feel welcome to give it a try. As long as you are willing to put a little bit of effort into roleplaying your character, it will be well worth it. Even at this relatively early stage of development, it is a richly developed world, with a very devoted community.
Download the client and check it out. You may find that you never want to leave.
And the price certainly can\'t be beat!

Right now the updater is running and is taking forever which i don\'t mind. this looks like fun and i\'m ready to play to my fullest MMORPG ability.
-
The updater does take rather a long time these days, just about an hour. I think it\'s in need of an update ;)
Welcome to the community! Let us know what your character name is once you have created it (there are some guidelines concerning character naming; see
this thread (http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=17682&boardid=1&styleid=3&sid=422c0746be6afe7ee54abc30cdac0c26)), and perhaps we can meet up in-game.
You can also find quite a wealth of information at the official Player Guide here. (http://www.planeshift.it/guide/en/index.html)
Again, welcome!

Unless someone starts paying people to play their game :D
Welcome! This is a very fun game, although quite incomplete. It has a great community and it frankly more addicting than anything free.
I can guarantee that it will be the best free game you can ever find.. Unless you like Runescape.

Well, if your computer isn\'t reasonably recent, PS will most likely be a problem. It\'s code is not optimised and thus it\'s demanding compared to what it does. Also, it\'s almost a requirement that you have the most recent drivers for your graphics card and also DirectX.
-
DirectX? Uhhh... not a requirement at all. *points to the Mac and Linux distros*

Seriously, this thread is so obviously talking about windoze it hurts. And for that, DirectX is a requirement. There is no use in mentioning something that refers to a completely different OS. I am running Linux myself and thus I know that DirectX isn\'t required there. Furthermore, the \"requirement\" part was aimed at the \"most recent version\" of both GFX drivers and DX, though it indeed is worded ambigously.
-
I\'m just curious as to how it uses both DirectX and OpenGL... that seems counter-productive, coding it both ways. As to the requirements issue, I have to say that PS is actually not as demanding as many games out there. It is actually comparable to WoW (though WoW does admittedly have more content).
-
Alright, I\'m stupid and clueless. I was of the misguided belief that DirectX would somehow provide OpenGL which, in hindsight, is not exactly reasonable, to say the least. So obviously DirectX isn\'t required for PS. Sorry for being a moron. :(
-
Hehe. Thanks for dispelling my confusion. It is all clearer now. *bows*
DirectX is a M$ monopoly tool. M$ is in fact shafting OpenGL support in Vista by requiring their old, outdated version for the graphic effects in Vista. Above short rant explains why I was confused about a relation between DirectX and OpenGL. ;)
-
Yup. M$ (Why does everyone use that $ sign?) is trying o kill OpenGL, just like several other progrms.. You can always count on micro$oft..
