What if everyone started out with thier own house? You could begin in a small little apartment, and then whenever you feel like it change to another residence. And, once you move out another new player gets into your spot. These houses would be permanent in the game just like a normal building. It would add alot of realism. And if you choose your character to be homeless you can be that way. Better houses could be bought, and the houses in better spots would be given to the first people who come.
A strange idea, isn\'t it...
-
cool idea. but planeshifts popularity will grow much more rapidly when there is more to do. and thus attracting more players. eventually there will be a huge need for houses and will probably be to much to keep up with.
-
In other words, Aelya, just like in real life :D
-
Yeah, thats what slums are for. :D
-
Alot of people already come through but leave because they cant read the documents to see this is a tech demo, But especially when we get into beta im sure thousands of people will come through because of the word FREE.
-
That\'s a cool idea, its like Animal Crossing (don\'t laugh). It would give players somewhere to call home, but wouldn\'t some players hog up the land with castles, palaces, and stuff? On the other hand you wouldn\'t have to pay millions for a hovel like in UO since there would be soo many houses.
-
Atm, the devs are already putting it in the game, with the exception that you\'ll start without a house.
Later when you got enough money you can buy one.
I think this is the best way; it keeps newbies and player who wont play that long out of the houses (saving up housing spaces), but will encourage long-term players to buy one.
And guys...buying yourself the first time a house is a lot greater then getting it from the game, even if it is a pile of junk. It gives you that extra feeling that you done it all by yourself ;)

Yeah, Xolon is right about that.
And the problem of losing space could be reduced by making housing extremely high priced.
Also, what would be the benifits of owning a house? Other than having a place to call your own.
I suppose it could be your respawn place. And you could store items there.
But will there be any other in game benifit of owning a house?
-
erm .... you can give parties and charge people truck loads of money to get in?
-
A place to rest and heal really fast?
-
Maybe to train and you can buy additions to help such as a target for archery, punching bag for strength... you know stuff like that.
-
A place where you can hide from cyo :P
We all know thats the biggest bonus
-
erhm...
Where else can i brew my own stouts?
-Xolon-

I hope as the first people here, we get the good spots.
-

I want to live in a cabin across from a broken bridge like in Evil Dead, that would be sweet. But if I can\'t maybe a nice tower overlooking the town. Or better yet, a castle by the sea, that sort of cliche story book stuff. Here\'s an idea that probably won\'t make it. what about platforms in the trees? Like in Lord of the Rings, the elves of Lothlorien let the Fellowship sleep on thee things since they didn\'t live in the ground. Just a thought. As for housing perks, having a place to call your own is enough for me, but it would be nice if you could do things like make an evil lair and summon monsters to guard it for you (sorta like Dungeon Keeper).

Instead of starting with a house one should start with a tent where they can set up anywhere (Unless its a no build zone) in witch guards or someone will stop you.
Ofcourse these tents really dont serve much for item protection as they are easy to break into but just something simple for players to have when they start up, Dont need to be Pre-Built in mass\' and would also be a nice tool for people who go on long adventures away from there homes.
Sleeping in tents instead of on the ground should give some benifits over just keeling over and getting rest anywhere.
-
Just my opinions:
I don\'t think you should start out with anything (or maybe a tent at most as the dude above me said). That way you have a feeling of achievment when you get a house. Of course houses shouldn\'t be too expensive so that getting a small hut will not make you the king and queen of cheese.
House uses:
1) A place to call your own and be proud of.
2) A place to rest and heal. Maybe you should heal faster and have faster stamina growth when you\'re in a house and even bigger when you\'re at home.
3) A place to store your booty.
4) A place to start a shop meaning money will come in.
5) A place to have lots of various nifty things like blacksmithing stuff (anvils, forges), training stuff (target, dummies, punchbags etc) scholarly stuff (bookcase, writing desk, globe/stalagmite), cooking stuff (stove, small flour mill) and the similar stuff.
House building:
The one thing that bugs me in a lot of games is the deed system where you buy a house deed and then place it anywhere you want. A much better aproach would be to realy build the house at the designated spot. To build a hovel you would need a good builder and a few laborours to do the menial stuff. To build a palace you would need architects, good builders, laborours and an extensive supply system. This makes the game more realistic and adds atmosphere. Castles after all should take ages to build.
-
Maybe when you start the game, you can be a homeless traveler, or you could simply own, like people said before, a tent. And also, the starting locations. If you start out with a tent, where will all the tents be? In your inventory space? Apartments, where will they be located? I think that everybody should be homeless, and once they get some money, they can buy a tent to carry around. And on and on until they get themselves a castle, or better.
Another thing, too. I think that we should have some other low quality home as our newest permanent home to buy/build, unless you want to save money to buy a larger home. I believe that one of them is in Tropico, but I forget what they\'re called. You know, the ones the citizens build themselves when you don\'t supply them with houses.
A word about tents:
Like Killz4Thrillz said, tents should be able to be carried around, except for the fact that they would be heavy to carry. Perhaps if you log out, your character would pitch camp and the tent would be locked, and when you log back in, some health and/or mana would be regained, and you can do that, too, whenever you want to when you\'re online. Also, maybe you can enchant or buy enchanted tents. Enchanted tents would serve different uses better(Duh). Also, there could be a thing like a tent, except higher quality and more features. Kind of like those portable homes, except with some changes.
Somehow, I get a mental picture of a wagon with oxen...

Get them before they multiply!
Although I must admit, the sig is nice, to say the least. And the site, well...i laughed my ass of. \"The Knights That Say \"ni\"\" are my new role models. Now, where can I get some action figures of my newly found friends?
