Title: Birdie birdie birdie
Post by: kriller on September 20, 2005, 08:45:58 pm
I wonder if I\'ll be in need of a new pair of socks. That\'s what I was thinking when I suddenly realized that i had no birdpoo on my shoulder. And what\'s more suprising, I was standing in the middle of the townsquare of Yliakum. So I looked up at the sky understood that there where no birds up there. Who has ever been to a real life townsquare withoud pidgets? So I say that Yliakum need some birds to make the town more alive. Perhapz this feature has already been thought of, and if so, please tell me.

and they would fly away if you ran at them, that wouuld be fun!

but it would create a lot of lag with 100 pidgeys scampering around

You\'d only need three or four.  There also aren\'t any livestock, harmless wild animals, etc.

And you can make them targets for newbierangers. Hey let\'s go hunt some pidgets at the twonsquare!

I thought they were pidgeons? :)

There will be wildlife and indeed livestock similar to that which we get on Earth, but of course unique to Yliakum. Flocking birds would be a nice touch. It seems to me that there are a few ways these could be implemented:

The Easiest Solution: Every bird exists only for the player looking at it. It moves and flees without sending messages to the rest of the server, causing no network lag and no synchronisation issues. Downside is that nobody else sees the same birds in the same places as you, which is unrealistic.

The Main Idea: Allowing a flock of birds to be classified as one \'object\' and move/flock the same for everyone within viewing distance. The clever part here is that each bird within the flock could still animate and move independantly, however, its overall destination and movement is controlled by the server. This keeps relatively the same thing viewed by all players, aswell as reducing the amount of lag produced.

The Most Expensive: Every bird moves independantly, reacting to every player, and is controlled by the server. All players see exactly the same thing. This would be much more resource-intensive, and thus not really a viable option for poor ol\' Laanx (or most of our players either).

You have to forgive me for my poor spelling... Anyway, Moogie, you seem to know what you\'re talking about.

Not at all, I have no first hand experience or knowledge of what it would take to code things like this. :) However, those seem to be the three solutions that come to mind with a little practical thinking.

Birdies could do the Fed-Ex thingy in the other topic, on to topic though Birds should not be in their hundreds in town square, there could 1 or 2 in trees, birds in the sky depending on the day/weather, and so on

i have absolutly no clue of what yadda yadda mean... is it something from texas which mean you would like to ride a bufalo ? or a jedish expression to speak about Yaveh ? or maybe simply a way to say etc ...

personally i think the alchimist skill is a better way to hunt : animals are already cooked when you hunt them with tnt ...

Make them not NPC\'s but Cyclers or something... like a moving texture... it would be same as moving water just have the invis color in between birds or squirrels or something... thereore you cant even TARGET them... thus noobs wouldnt waste energy or peacefulness on it... of course with ground creates or something you could run into make them no collide so that you do not NOT go through the track... as that IS how it would be... well that is how it is on a program i have that makes levels/maps for another game called hammer... so im using most terminology from it... im not sure if that is how this works... then again in Hammer you can make the \"blocks\" with textures on them that move... but whatever... i think you get the point...
