The client crashes when initially loading the game.
The left hand panel reads
Loading game
Requesting world
Loading world
Getting chars
Getting GUI
Setting up controls
Shortly after it crashes. No .dmp file is generated.
I\'ve tried to disable sounds, and to set the screen resoultion and color depth to the lowest possible - to no avail. It keeps crashing.
At some early point it\'s noted that no hardware acelleration is available. Don\'t know if that\'s important.
Someone got an idea about what could possible be causing this crash?
I\'m running WinXP SP2.
Thanks,
Jacob Dall

Normally that \"no hardware acceleration\" report comes because you\'re not running the most recent drivers for your graphics card.
Most commonly it will be capable of handling OpenGL correctly, so I guess updating drivers should work fine.
Keep in mind that sometimes the client crashes without any logical reason at first sight, just relaunch it till you can play.
Also, if you\'ve an ATI card, try Omega drivers as some problems have been reported with the official Catalysts.

What bit color are you using... and is there an error message? because by the words no dmp. file created im not sure if you mean no message or just it didnt ask you if you wanted to save it...
because when i started it up the first two d=times it did dump thingy and then run time error then it did it less and less and now it only sometimes does it when i alt tab...
-
If you\'re running it in full-screen mode try windowed, or vice versa.
-
I\'ve been trying 15 bit and 32 bit color depths - no error message is shown (beyond the \'no hardware accel\')?. And that one is shown in the very beginning - way before the crash.
By \'no dmp file created\' I mean \'no file is written to disk\'. And no, it doesn\'t ask me if I want to save something.
I get no error message immediately before the crash - it just very suddenly closes the window.
-
I was running fullscreen, so I tried windowed mode. I still get a crash, but at least now I get a dialog asking me if I want to save a dump. I\'ll upload the file as noted somewhere in this forum.
-
Yep, there\'s something odd about the dumper and fullscreen.
-
Whoopeeyyy - I finally managed to get it up and running.
Apparantly this had something to do with the graphics driver (hmmm, isn\'t that mentioned somewhere in the forum) - I updated to the very latest, and now it\'s just running and running with loads of colors and high res. That\'s just splendid.
Now, how do I report that to the debuggers?
-
Why would you need to report it..? It\'s a known issue, and not something that can be fixed by anyone but the individual users... :) It\'s just a matter of updating graphics drivers.

One could argue the bug is in the driver - another could argue it\'s in PlaneShift.
The \'address\' indicated by the dmp file is mentioned nowhere - I just want to let \'them\' know this is/couldbe related to the well-known graphics driver issue. That\'s all.
But if this info is not important, then let it be. I just wanted to help out.
-
Understandable, certainly. You can upload your dumps here (http://command.no-ip.com/dmp/) :)

When updating the drivers fix the problem, it\'s a very strong hint that the bug is in the drivers, and the driver developers already acknowledged it. If it was a bug in PS, updating the drivers wouldn\'t fix it.

Normally those people experiencing the graphic issues can play other games correctly with their non-updated drivers.
So, perhaps they\'re not that far from truth when saying that perhaps it\'s some CS or PS issue.
Edit: Unless they stick with the windows graphic cards drivers that, at least for not brand new nvidia graphics cards have some issues with OpenGL.

Other games don\'t necessarily use the same combination of features that CS/PS does, and thus may not hit the bug.
Similar to the bug I have with the OpenGL drivers on my system, Doom3 gets flashing blackness all over the textures, but Planeshift works perfectly. Why? Because Doom3 uses dynamic lightning, and that\'s what triggers the bug. Luckily my drivers allow turning off features on a per game basis. So, I can turn hardware TCL off for Doom3, without slowing down other games.

I think im having a slightly similar problem, I did update my graphics card, im running the game in 16 bit, while my computer is set on 24bit \"True Color\" I get to the loading world screen and the bar fills up about less then half way, then PS stops responding and just kinda crashes, I am not running it in full screen anymore either and the sounds is off...any ideas? should I just keep trying?
I even turned my Firewall and Virus Protection off, and still I cant get anywhere...But before I even updated my driver i got to GUI loading...
-
im hav a problem
when i try to log in the server
the loading always said\"
loading game
Requesting world
loading world
then nothing just like that my char wont upload!!!
even the bar on bottom alredi finish but my char wont upload!!!

Augustine, have you followed previous suggestions such as updating both the game and your graphics card drivers, disabling sound, and making sure you do not have \"Load All Maps\" enabled?
Also, do you meet or exceed the minimum requirements?
Minimum Requirements:
* Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP, Mac OS X 10.2.6, Linux, FreeBSD or Solaris
* GeForce 2 or higher 3D graphics card
* 1 Ghz CPU
* 512 MB RAM
* 1 GB free disk space
* 56k modem Internet connection
Recommended Requirements:
* Windows XP, Mac OS X 10.2.6, Linux or FreeBSD
* GeForce 4 or higher 3D graphics card
* 2 Ghz CPU
* 1 GB RAM
* 1 GB free disk space
* Broadband Internet connection

Since the last server crash Iv had the same problem

my 2p worth:
I had the same problem (along with a few others), but mine was solved by turning off sound, setting the graphics to the minimum, setting screen to full screen and most importantly, upgrading to the latest drivers from the ATI website (have a Radeon 9600).
I also had issues with the zonealarm firewall, the game would load to 100% and then wait... apparently a zonealarm pop-up was waiting for me to allow the game access to the net.
Hope it helps
