Title: Why is Planeshift totaly free?

Sorry, if this thread existes already, but couldnt find anything by searching.
Planeshift is totaly free right? That means, if I play Planeshift i havent to pay anything , right?
So the dont developpers get any money.
I like it, that there is a really good free MMORPG,
but my question is: why?
It just interests me, if the developpers just do that for fun.

Well i havent seen a nice topic like this (only those lamers saying it CANT stay free).

But this is how it \'works\';

1) Planeshift is, and will be forever free. This can be achieved by a great donation of servers and webspace.

2) All developers are working freelance based. They dont get payed for it, but can expect the credits and some ingame \'extras\'.

3) why? , well that and even the things listed above are explained on the PS website ;).

yes. planeshift will always be free. as for why...i think its simply because the devs want to make a great mmorpg that everyone can enjoy. they are doing it on their own free time. they arnt employed. so yea i guess you could say they do it for fun. and the servers are donated. isnt that peachy? :D

Yes indeed, that is the plan. Xolon explained it very well and all that he said will stand for the full release as well. :D

Grrr, I want to join the team, too bad my C++ class moves at 2 mph.  Jeez, we waste so much time doing review problems, we never move forward.

Yeah the c++ classes i took moved slowly as well.
Very frustrating... especially if you already know how to do what your learning to do.

Planeshift is our baby and we want it a) to exist, and b) for as many people as possible to enjoy our work.

We do it for love not money.  Everyone is in school or has a job.  We are rewarded by compliments, are compensated in respect and are paid in admiration.

Also we just think it would be cool. :-)

On a more serious note, part of the reason is that as soon as you have ANY money involved, the whole house of cards comes tumbling down.  Everyone is fine to work for free because everyone else is also working for free--it\'s \"fair\".

If someone gave us $1000, I don\'t know how we\'d spend it because everyone would feel like they should get part of it.  Because we have $0, the people who aren\'t happy with $0 never join and the people that join with that understanding are happy.
