Is there really any way other then updating through the updater to get the updates? Because it like super slow.

Several times already, there was written how to change the updater configuration to have it use another faster update mirror. For example, in this thread (http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=19644&boardid=17).
