Title: Dragons and Grendols
Post by: Avarus on October 13, 2005, 06:37:29 pm
*Ahum*If there\'s one thing discussed the most, it would be the discussion about Dragons and so on.

Quote
For one there\'s no goblins, trolls, kobolds and other mainstream \"monsters\" (there\'s no dragons in Yliakum is a common saying). Also you won\'t see such things as horses.

But what about the Grendol. The name Grendol was used the first time in a story around 1100 AD named \"Beowulf\", in wich is described the adventures of a Scandinavian warrior of the 6th sentury. The Grendol was the terrible monster that had to be defeated. In the Netherlands it isn\'t a well know story, but I think it is in Britain, since it is a Britain story (like \'Karel ende Elegast\' in the Netherlands). So the Grendol is one of the mainstream monster. Then why is the Grendol allowed in PS, while dragons and goblins aren\'t?

Talad said there are no Dragons in planeshift.

there are no Dragons in planeshift.

Talad accepted the plan of the creature named \'Grendol\'

there are Grendols in planeshift.

ultimately it\'s his and the other Developers decision,

besides dragons suck (no offense to the DC)

Afaik, the Beowulf monster\'s name is \"Grendel\", not \"Grendol\".
So it\'s just a similarity.

And dragons kick arse.

watch out for Grendel\'s mom ...she was baaaaad! If Beowulf hadn\'t found that giant\'s sword, he would have be SO much toast!

Dragons don\'t suck :P Alot of weaponry and things are named from dragons. Besides dragons come in many forms, including vampires. Klyros can be considered a dragon, just like any large scaled creature can be.

Komodo Dragon and Dragon Fruit are two things not completly related to dragons.

But if your not going to have dragons, you still need a large creature which its body can be fashioned into many things, mostly weapons.

You can have the Wyrm, which is a giant snake with the head of what looks like a common dragon. Wyrms live in different environments just like dragons.

Water & Sea Dragon- Lives in Lakes and Oceans, eats mostly fish, Water Element, Can fly but mostly swims, Can breathe under water, eats mostly fish.

Red Fire Dragon- Lives in caves of volcanoes, Dorment or Active. Fire Element, some of these types cannot fly, most do. Eats any fresh meat it can find, often known to attack villages for cows and people.

Green Dragon- Lives in deep forest and jungle areas where mostly are not disturbed unless they wonder into common human areas. Earth Element, some of these types cannot fly, most do. Omnivore

Sky Dragon- Lives mostly on high cliffs, rarly seen, Often flying high above the clouds, Air Element, All of these types fly. No one is truely sure what these Dragons eat, but see eating mountain goats more then often.

Those are just a few types of dragons, I don\'t mind a world without dragons, but as long as they don\'t totally remove colossal from their height list. Many people love to fight giant monsters and bosses. Thats what PS needs more of.. Colossal Creatures that are Very deadly and give awesome tresures of gems, weapons, armors, and organic things straight from the body to create rare weapons, armors, elixers, and other powerful tools.

But nothing \"draconic\" is required for that. Imaginations are not so limited here that large beasts whose parts may be used in various crafts have to resemble anything remotely dragon-like.

there is also a Grendol monster in the final fantasy games, but it\'s not the same as ours, now is it?

also, a character in the epic of Gilgamesh is called Enkidu. related? No.

names don\'t matter, they\'re just names. as long as the creature is original, name doesn\'t matter... in my opinion. unless it\'s a blatant rip-off like... Chocobo... *chocobo dance!*

now, having a fire-breathing lizard with wings and calling it a Fluffernutter is an example of what NOT to do.

Don\'t call it a Fluffernutter, call it a Carakas Ancient. :-D

but fluffernutter is just so much better! why, if it were up to me, everything would be called fluffernutter. XD

And what about the beast in the loading screen?
When i start PS, i see a loading screen.

I see 4 pillars and on one of the pillars is a beast, which looks a lot like a Dragon.

Pterosaur. Which is a bad name/choice as well, but who are we to argue with Talad\'s choices.

*shrug*  I think we can argue, and we should.  That doesn\'t mean he has to pay attention.

Doesn\'t matter though, as NPCs cannot cast spells yet.... but they should!

I think the main idea behind PlaneShift is that it\'s innovative on so many levels - from the idea and story itself to the bestiary and beyond.

That was, I suppose, also the idea why \"there are no gobilns, orcs, dragons, etc.\" ...and I agree - there should be no Pterosaurs as well!!

It\'s not that I don\'t like the idea of a flying ridable creature - quite the oposite, I\'m extremely looking forward to them, but nevertheless they shouldn\'t be so obvious as Pterosaurs or Dragons or other stuff you see everywhere ...I for one like Venegance\'s idea on this: \"I\'d really like to see flying manta-rays in PS\" ...or at least something vaguely bizare as that ...maybe a flying squirel-like creature, or enormous fellyfish as baloons ...

Well, that\'s it from me for now. And about who are we to question Talad\'s choices? We\'re the players behind this game - we can question. If he will listen - that\'s his choice.

Ywah what about gobbles? They are quite a common fantasy creature..

Not to mention giant rats. They are the ultimate cliche for RPGs.. :/

I don\'t like the rats
Dragons rock! :P

...Never heard of them.

Personally though, I think this whole \"let\'s make completely new cratures\" idea didn\'t turn out well.

If goblins are too cliche, it still isn\'t a reason to not just take some other creatures out of the vast folklore.

I mean how many people heard of Woodwose? Or Kelpie? It\'s much more fun to look things up and learn some background behind the creatures, than to just have ones that seem interesting for a while, but quickly become dull and boring.

Megara is actually fromsome Greek myth, but I don\'t think she\'s related to giant bats.
And yes, large rats are so cliche they are a part of Spoonscape.

What not just spoonscape, its on practically every single RPG out there lol :P

We should add giant rats, but not make them the weakest monster. Lets make a rat this big

rat -> O . <- you

And make it the uberboss or something :P

\"Giant Rat hits you on the head for 46281.12 damage!\"
\"You were killed by giant rat!\"

I personally want to see a what about Uber tiny creatures...

Also as for mounts... How about a Elephant with bird wings and it has yellow pokadots and black stripes, and instead of tusks, it has a horn that it can impale creatures on, and you can bomb people with giant globs of poison goo..
