While browsing around, i\'ve found this Thread in the Fragnetics Forums :
http://www.fragnetics.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6101&sid=a395b4a86224af46a42e15637286c4a3
about Fragnetics ( the PS Server Sponsor), launching a TemSpeak Server.
Could this be interesting also for PS?
BTW: There is a Beta Version of an unoffical TeamSpeex Client for MAC,
see : http://www.savvy.nl/blog/download/
Unoffical, but accepted by the offical TeamSpeak

now that is a cool idea ..
i always thought about voice-comm in ps, but i never got to the idea of using an external tool like in other games XD
*looks at the fragnetics-ts-server and starts setting up an own one for testing*

No, how would you like to hear a little 8 year olds voice comming from a Krans body? I like teamspeak for shooting games but I would shoot the person who thinks its a good idea in a role playing game.
-
for this role playing game it would be inappropriate... and almost spooky hearing females speaking as males and vice-versa
I found this thing interesting, as keyboardchat sometimes get\'s people to use some fancy abbreviations which can be quite annoying after a while.
Yes it is annoying, and thus is avoided by us ingame..
But never-the-less such sound ideas are also memory chompers... and some would miss out on the gaming.
-
if this is you concerne, there is enough SW which could turn you(\'re voice) from a man into a woman ( and vice versa ) or change it to whatever you want, in (almost) realtime.
But i have to admint, there is a point.

GREAT IDEA! This can even be used for a singing skill!
Noob talking into mic: sup g-unit *plays eminem into his mic*
...This idea sucks.
-
With the lack of filters I could see \"hey nice boobs hot stuff\" or \"f**k you b****h\" being blurted out into the game. not funny.
-
I think if it was set up so you can only hear those you choose to hear, and the rest go by regular chatting, I don\'t see why it wouldn\'t work. Sometimes (when multitasking) it would be much easier to talk to someone, and also when you try to explain something to them.
Of course, you wouldn\'t want to be able to hear everything everyone says, only those you choose to. Don\'t have a headset, people can still just text you. I see no reason why they couldn\'t incorporate it, but I also don\'t see a really good reason for them to do it either. It really has no advantage or disadvantage IMO.
-
another problem which came into my mind is the amount of players.
when all players would be in one channel, you wouldn\'t be able to do anything usefull. in-game voice-comm could use the distance to change the loudness.
perhaps someone with too much time left could make a hooking-thingy to combine ps and ts :P
-
What about a channel for every guild?
-
I\'ll just say my mind in two simple sentances:
1) NO!!
and
2) use search
-
Hey watcher , Please load the gun and toss it this way.
:D
Aranis

*Tosses gun, grabs nuke button*
Seriously if you heard a child?s voice that hasn\'t even broken yet would you really take him seriously? Let me put it this way, its Planeshift, not ?Hey why don\'t we totally throw you out of the setting by introducing little kid voices and we are also going to add shotguns because its \'cool\'.?
-
No chatspeak, that would be creepy. However, Voice to Text would be nice for those of us with less then par typing skills.
Like Hook said, though, don\'t hold your breath. :)
-
Voice to text is a good idea.
(wories about his low frame rate dropping even lower.)

mmm teamspeak is cool, i use it in eve. What people do in eve is corporations set up their own dedicated TS servers and then give out the ip and password to the server to everyone in the corp and then anyone that wants to can log onto the TS server.
One thing i find with TS is when 2 people are speaking at once, it becomes very hard to understand them.
but anyway if guilds/groups/friends just set up their own TS servers with different channels for different things like different hunting groups then you could make channels private and on public channels server/channel moderators could ban people they didnt like. Ingame you just use a spare key on the keyboard such as \'t\' for TS key to press when you want to talk.
I like TS because it lets you know the people ingame better, because you can actually hear their voice, and its also alot of fun using it for the first time.
with the OOC sounding voices, i guess you just dont talk to people with high, squeky voices. OOC sounding voice would be just like OOC text, except alot worse.alot.

I don\'t like this idea at all. It would, as has been stated, severely break the immersion. Yes, textual chat is extremely restricted in it\'s usability, especially when moving (though that issue can be at least partially remedied). However, unless decent voice converters are available under GPL or comparative terms it would just not work. Also unless TS is GPL, I don\'t want it in PS. Addint any non GPL stuff, especially making it required (by having it replace the chat) would be bigotism for a FOSS product like PS.
As for text to speech or speech to text... do these things work so well that they can actually translate strong accents? Several people in PS aren\'t native speakers and are having trouble formulating. This doesn\'t solely refer to spelling, but to articulation. So I imagine the speech to text part being as usable as translating text through an online translator three times back and forth. :)

If any guild does want TS hosting, PM me.. We have very cheap hosting for TS for up to 50 slots. I wouldn\'t shamelessly advertise but it happened to be relevent and it is a good service for less than most. We are just gamers, too.

Agreed. Teamspeak and other chatting tools are mainly for FPS or games like warcraft 3 (lots of DotA clans use it) when you need to communicate quickly, and without using your hands. It doesnt really add anything to the immersion of the game.
-
so would people actually say \"/me does stuff\" ...? or talk about thenselves in whatever person it is.
for an out of game thing mebe... i would prolly come play if i could find a mic, would find some interesing accents. but in game its just silly

Thanks to all of you for sharing your thoughts. I\'ve come ( for myself ) to the conclusion, that i agree with the people which are thinking that TS doesn\'t really fit with PS.
I guess, if a group of players likes to use something like TS, they can arrange a TS or even Skype Conference on their own without any problems, but i don\'t think, that this is something wich should be build into PS.
I hope, that if people are going to use TS or something alike on their own, that they will still give priority to the generally used text chat in PS. I wouldn\'t like to see PS spilt into voice and text chatters.
