I realize most newbies whine about fighting rats.
I have only one humble question.
...where are the rats?
-
1. In the sewers of Hydlaa - there is an entrance behind the tavern, and one by the plaza. Ask around in-game for someone to lead you :)
2. Warehouse in eastern Akkaio, part of the Enkidukai city of Ojaveda. In the top left-hand corner, sneakily hidden away. Might want to ask around again.
-
^^;; Thank you. I am sure I\'ll be so grateful to -find- the rats that I\'ll be glad to fight them from now until the next millenia.
-
Right, so since you won\'t feel fine to ask;
Clackers are commonly the next target after rats :P
-
Another helpful guide...
Don\'t go killing other stuff like Tefs and gobbles..even Fanatics until you are very sure you\'ve trained and know how to use a wepon...Most newbs die when they fight something to strong...
Once upon a time I did that...><\'

Speaking of new levels of ineptitude, I\'ve died facing rats! ::blush:: Granted it was right at the beginning, but it still happened more than once. I\'m such a crummy fighter :D
On the upside: I can now exit the Death Realm practically with my eyes closed :]

Thank everyone kindly for their help. ^^; I have the feeling I\'m going to need it. As an update, I did manage to find the sewers after wandering around goodness knows where for hours and finally asking a group of players I stumbled upon. Someone was kind enough to lead me there. Alas, monsters were invulnerable to attack at that point.

:D I have the feeling we\'ll be brothers/sisters in that aspect, Eowyn. I\'m an awful, awful fighter too. We\'ll see how I do when I actually face my first rat.

It\'s really hard to die from a rat now.... it wasn\'t that long ago when you could find 7 rats in one room in the sewers. Now THAT was dangerous when you\'re new.

Yeeesh! I\'ve had to stand in line and wait or share rat spawns with other people, or altogether come back later, there doesn\'t seem to be enough rats to go around... The happy meduim is missing there. Oh well, at least they breed/spwan as quick as, errr.... well, rats!
-
aww... new newbs are so cute...
except for the ones that go \"LOLZZ GVE ME MONIES PLZ CN I HAV UR SWRD LOLO!1!1!1!1one!11!1exclamation!!!11\"
-
They don\'t really talk like that, Minority.
-
LoL, hah I had a newb asking for my 44 longsword the other day because they thought it was a crappy longsword.
-

i know. i\'m just over-exaggerating the story as i usually do to most stories. just messin\' around! *pokes Shami with a laughing-stick*
although i did meet one who was somewhat like that... XD

First question most newbies ask: How do I play this game.
Possible solution: 1. Tutorial before starting actual game, 2. In-game newbie orientation by experienced players, 3. At least tell a newbie through the system chat, or pop a message on the screen that *you can ask for help in the HELP tab in communication window*. Needless to say, the communication window must be opened by default in all newly installed games.
Second question newbies ask: How do I attack?
Possible solution: When everyone starts their game (newbie or older or anyone), there should be a message if the NPC is down, and *possibly* information on when should it start.
Third question: Where are the monsters?
Possible solution: First combat site should be searchable by newbies fairly easily. If someone cant\' find his/her way, he/she will simply leave the game (and possibly fall back to whatever other game they were earlier playing). I guess there should be a prominent landmark near where the rats are, so that newbies find it easier to go there. And I never advocate hiding the easiest monster (rat) to where a newbie would never find them unless he/she spends an entire day running here and there in Hydlaa.
My question: Why aren\'t we making planeshift more user friendly?
Possible answer: We are, but the developers aren\'t paid to work *that hard* ;)

Suggested multiple times - run a search through the Wishlist section, and you will see loads upon loads of threads concerning in-game newbie tutorials.
2. In-game newbie orientation by experienced players,
It\'s being done :)

This is one of the messages that already appear in the chat window as soon as the PlaneShift world loads. Granted, it\'s one of the many. But a decent player should always read the player guide before jumping in anyway - thus he or she has the first responsibility.

What, like a count-down? ;) If the very second question newbies ask is \"How do I attack?\" they need to be told very thoroughly that PlaneShift isn\'t meant to be combat-oriented, and there are things to do that do not involve attacking - particularly when NPC client is unavailable. There is exploration, and most of all, roleplay.
Third question: Where are the monsters?
Answer: explore.
Possible solution: First combat site should be searchable by newbies fairly easily.
Ey? Why is that? Again, PlaneShift isn\'t combat-oriented, and since players start in cities which are not built near monster-infested sites (though there are the sewers and the Hydlaa Arena) immediate combat areas do not make much sense.
If someone cant\' find his/her way, he/she will simply leave the game (and possibly fall back to whatever other game they were earlier playing).
If someone has such little patience and desire to explore, they aren\'t likely to bring anything to the community - definitely not any roleplay, which is what matters most. I wouldn\'t regret such people\'s departures.
My question: Why aren\'t we making planeshift more user friendly?
Possible answer: We are, but the developers aren\'t paid to work *that hard* ;)
True answer: This is a tech demo, where a working code at the moment means a whole lot more than making entry easier for lazy players ;)
-
I understand that PlaneShift is to be taken as a \"tech-demo\" for the time being, and not a complete *game*. That solves all the problems! :)

ok cool, the clackers are killable for me, but they get me down to about 20% and i gotta wait forever to regen so i can attack another, its time to go find those rats :D
