Maybe I\'m a flaming retard (hopefully not), and I don\'t want to sound like a linux newb (running linux for...7 and a half years), but I totally screwed up my planeshift install trying to update. OOPS!
I installed the gentoo package on amd64 system through emerge, 3.011 version. I tried getting on today, couldn\'t, went to update, saw I needed to update the package...I figured there wasn\'t a gentoo update yet, which there isn\'t yet (not trying to sound condesending there, I just don\'t know how else to put that). I tried installing the update listed in the sticky. I figured it wouldn\'t work, and it didn\'t. I guess it installs things differently. I wasn\'t really paying attention to what I was doing.
So I tried running things gentoo style, and it wasn\'t working. So I uninstalled the general linux system, unmerged the gentoo one and remerged. Now the \"planeshift-*\" files aren\'t in /usr/bin but everything runs fine out of /opt/planeshift. I tried symlinking but it wasn\'t really working right. Right now I have the updater re-downloading everything.
I\'m mostly just curious as to when the gentoo package will be updated, and if when I update the package if the /usr/bin links will be working again...Has anyone else pulled a stupid move like this or am I alone in the \"...whatever, I just want it to be updated\" and screwing up the whole thing...thing? Can I simply unmerge the gentoo ebuild and use the generic linux one without a problem?

It won\'t be updated I guess. There\'s little need for it as the updater will download the binaries through the updater soon, and would overwrite any self compiled binaries. And yes, these binaries work totally different to the gentoo packages and aren\'t compatible.
Best thing to do is to unmerge the gentoo stuff, then download my patch, (to get symlinks makes sure you install as root and select to install system wide and also set the permissions, although default should work), and then run \'updater -auto\' to download all the art from the updater.
Hope this helps.

I\'ve installed the .bin from the Installer Releases thread, used the updater to update everything, and the game\'s loading and connecting. When I connect...the screen\'s totally FUBAR, though. All the overlays load fine (chat window, information window, etc) but characters and world do not show up. It\'s not even just black, the overlays are fragmenting over it...it\'s weird. I thought maybe the world loaded wrong, so i /unstuck to no avail, then /die\'d, so now I\'m in the death realm but it\'s doing the same thing.

also, whenever I load setup or the client I get this error:
crystalspace.canvas.openglcommon:
Could not open driver database file \'/config/gldrivers.xml\'
crystalspace.engine.warning:
Shader std_lighting.xml not available
Shader std_lighting_portal.xml not available
it loads in the console and a little yellowish field on the top of the client. The in-client one drops away after a few seconds. I\'ve never seen this error before.

I\'m getting this too. Up until recently I\'ve been running PS without CrystalSpace or CEL installed separately and it\'s been running fine. Then, thinking that I might get a speed boost from a separately installed and possibly newer CS/CEL, I decided to install them based on a emerge command line I\'d seen before:
emerge jam cal3d ode lib3ds crystalspace cel
No problems at first, but after a reboot I was getting the same problems. The sound also seemed to be running at half-speed.
After a quick bit of investigation, I\'ve found you can disable PS using an \"external\" version of CrystalSpace by running:
unset CRYSTAL
(the location of CrystalSpace is stored in $CRYSTAL)
Note that, unless you unmerge CrystalSpace completely, you\'ll need to unset the variable every time you reboot the computer, as it\'s set in a file located in /etc/env.d.
I\'m installing the CVS versions of CrystalSpace and CEL at the moment to see if they make any difference. I\'ll keep you all posted.
Hope this helps!
UPDATE
It didn\'t make any difference. Best thing, for the moment, is to unmerge CrystalSpace and CEL and let PlaneShift use its own built-in version of the libraries.
BTW the ebuild for the CVS version of CEL doesn\'t work -- it points to a non-existant CVS server. I\'ve uploaded one that does work here (http://www.alexbrown.info/dump/cel-cvs-0.97-r1.ebuild) just in case it\'s needed in the future.

I just wanna show an example of what I see when I load up the game, so everyone understands what\'s up...

I\'m not sure what would cause this. In the first screenshot you can see how it\'s causing overlay trails. Nothing from the world is displayed at all....

that\'s weird....copy and paste it, it works that way...something must be up with my .htaccess files or something. I\'ll have to mess with those later.
