Title: Ingame PS GUI
Post by: Moogie on November 07, 2005, 10:17:11 pm
Poll Question:

For the resolution you most commonly play PlaneShift with, would you say the size/shape of the ingame menus and GUI windows is:

a) Just right
b) Too small or hard to read
c) Too large or cluttered

If you vote, please take the time to post your vote below, including the resolution you play in.

Thank you :)

Edit: Grrr to the reordering the forum did without telling me -.-

for me it\'s too big and cluttered, solely due to font sizes changing

running windowed at 1024 x 768

EDIT I remembered this inter-changeable font size wish list thread (http://planeshift.oodlz.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=20003&boardid=11&styleid=4)

we also use 1024x768 and we find the ingame menus are too big and cluttered...  they should be made so they can be shrunk and as you shrink them the fonts shrink too..

ATM, I have edited ~ 1/3 of the XML files (changed or added font tags) and set them Read-Only afterwards.

c. using different sizes.
some things could be smaller such as the info window... i dont know why its the size it is, what is ther eactually in there to make it that big. and the chat box, also the other thing, shortcuts but thats not too much of a problem.

mostly using 1024 by 768

Too big and cluttered in my opinion too. And 1024 x 768 as well.

I end up resizing whatever doesn\'t require much effort for that.

I\'m running 1280x960
The GUI is by far too large, especially the main info window. Also, the buddylist window wastes serious space at the left, top and bottom, and also some space at the right.
Since the change of the font size to something ridiculously large the shortcut window is also too big.
The top toolbar is alright, I minimise it always, anyway, and when I use it the size is fine.
Also, the chat window wastes space at it\'s lower end. I manually move it down each time so that the wasted part is outside the window.

In the linked to screenshot I have marked the space that is wasted using white lines. The main info window I have left at my default replacement to exemplify how it should look, as the original one is huge beyond marking. :)

Running at 1600x1200 (:O) and it\'s still a little cluttery. Very pretty though :]

I think the gui designer forgot about transparency. The gui could be alot more organic, so to speak, and hug the edges of the screen more. This keeps it all nice and out of the way..

I agree, there is too much wasted space.

I run at 1280x1024 Fullscreen or 1280x960 windowed and the fonts were huge I have changed most of the xml files to make it usable for me...

It\'s too big. It needs to be condensed and reshaped to fit to the sides of the screen more. The chat window also needs to shrink a bit.

I haven\'t voted.

I am in charge of fixing the complete GUI and, apart a basic lack of time atm, doing it is a really slow and long process.

The complete GUI needs to be fixed not just in order to be \"small and pretty\" but also to be functional and usable.
This concept should start to be applied in the starting screens, which are not easy to navigate, for instance.

There is already the knowledge that the GUI has several issues (as a matter of fact among the devs we have discussed this around August and for this reason I got the task), therefore the poll is not that useful.
When I test PS I even use the smallest possible resolution and it is not just how big is the window the base on which modify the layout or even the shape of a window.

At the moment, the GUI will not go through big changes because I have other things to do, but this doesn\'t mean that it will not get improved, on the other hand, it means that when it will be completely redesigned it will not be just the \"clutterness\" that will be fixed.

If you have suggestions they are all welcome (for example, Nikodemus has suggested a change in a window and it is currently being analyzed), but let this work be in the hands of \"professionals\" :-) Thanks!

Running at 1024 x 768 and I agree with most that it is to big and cluttered. I think the font size is way to big :) and there is alot of wasted space...

Personally I have no problem with it. I usually use 1024 X 768, but on ocassion I use 1200 X 900 and still have no issue with it.

I use 1024 x 768 and I feel that it is too big and cluttered. Making it smaller could definately help.

I\'m using 1024x768.  I\'m also running linux, so apparently everything\'s bloody huge...

I prefered it before the fix.  The larger names didn\'t bother me, but now my shortcut menus takes up about a 1/5 of my screen space...crazy.

The wacky font sizes are a bug, I think the poll was mainly about the use of space and UI design, not the text size

1024X768--> ingame menus and GUI windows too big...

I am not a GUI pro, but it seems to me that the main, 3D view should be shrunk so that a smaller portion of it is covered by GUI elements.  I\'m a fan of a main view with a sidebar and maybe an area under or over the main view, and overlap of the main view when necessary.

Font are ridiculously big, the shortcut window needs fixing...in terms of looking good and the font.
Most of the time, names are to small but other times there huge

On a side note: The updater and the setup is to small
And my screen is 1024X768
Title:
Post by: Shadeslayer on November 10, 2005, 02:29:41 pm
My screen is 800 X 600
The letters seem way to huge and sometimes I have to scroll down a lot when I\'m chatting...
The shortcut bar\'s words are slightly big but the icons and the rest are at a normal state
And I can\'t read all of the MOTD in PS and my guild

EDIT: Whoops, forgot to change the format of PS client...sorry :D

hah! the gui is somethink what i\'m working on.
/me plays professional :P

Too big font size is somethink what most of you never experienced because you wasn\'t on 800x600. You see, if you would, then you see the font to be proportionally big to the rest of the window in the same way as it is not to all resolutions.
1. It is because text is now scaled as it should in most cases
2. the xmls which contain most informations about style customization were designed with low amount of time, thus need editing (always needed).

I can and i\'m already fixing most of the problems which you experience. I\'m more than willing to do the xml job, but doing that, i would like to do it well. Some things are out of my reach.. like editing the art which is protected by license and editing the source code, to fix some wasted space and lack of customization through xml files.
I have edited most of the char creation and login screens inside this file:

http://crimsonorder.website.pl/gui.zip

I would like to continue my job being n touch with devs responbsible for gui. So, you Arianna and Borrallis, as i know you both work on some parts of gui. Borrallis already helped me a bit although it is harder to catch you ;).

Info about how i edit:
Because of the fact i can\'t do thing as I want, (mainly because of background images description and current style of GUI) some things i left unedited and other small elements are richer by some additions. These would be done better, if 2D dev would be willing to do some very small edits and creative work.

Here i write down few customizaion bugs which i now remember (there are more, but i can never remmeber all, thats is why i need help of some dev who make the code changes and with who i could talk about it ;) )
- Not all scrollbars are customizable. These which appear only when needed, aren\'t. Also these, if not most, take twice as mych space as they should (width)
- background-buttons are needed for text which float in places where it looks weird.
- delete char widget moved by me, for those who don\'t like to click it by accident
- very recent bug with release 0.3.012a (or near it) the too long text like MOTD or tips (loading window) are cuted at some lenght just like that. Text separated with enter isn\'t.
- No way to customize shortcuts window through xmls. Almost every edit end by widged unable to load/crash. It would be good if the window would be same as customizable as most of the xmls.
Same goes for the part of help window with tree.

This aren\'t any serious problems, but should be fixed. I gues these because a lit more important, as this topic has appeared.

Running at 1280x1024 full screen and the default GUI font size is too large. Modifying XML files helps.

Way too big, except for the Labels which are too small at the moment. (Except of course that isnt really GUI.)
I usually hide every window except for the chat window, otherwise I simply cant see anything. (Usually run windowed at 800x640).

800x600, The GUI is a bit big and ugly at places. Most of the main toolbar buttons should go to a new \"Escape\" menu like most of the games.

I think it\'s fine, but I\'ve only been playing a short while.  It may grow on my nerves in time...

1024x768 - debian linux, xordan-binary (if that changes anything)
the default gui looks a bit weird - the text is often too big for the panels. i installed the bauraksered-skin and everything looks fine. thanks to the creator of that skin - it is great!

I agree, the text is too big - for almost every resolution.

Instead of auto-scaling, how about letting the user select the font size via pssetup?
You don\'t have to make it too complicated, just make a DropDown-List with \"Small\", \"Normal\" and \"Large\" where the font sizes are e.g. 10px, 12px and 14px, or use a slider and let them freely select a value between X and Y (e.g. 10 and 18). That\'s probably easier than auto-scaling.
Also, the point of using a big resolution is to have more space. An auto-scaling text will never allow that.
Furthermore, this should be easier to implement than a balanced auto-scaling system. :)

Hi

I play in 1024x768. Fonts are readable, but in certain windows (help, options, shortcut) verdana is somewhat big. When testing stuff I go in 800x600, where fonts look fine to me. In 640x480 cupandtalon is small and hard to read, but verdana is ok.

I like the user-selectable scaling Pogopuschel explained. It could be extended to cover gui windows too, not everyone wants their windows stretched.

I play in 800x600.
The GUI is fine, once I have re-arranged the different elements a bit.

I think it\'s unanimous. Everyone who has posted ( from 1024X768 to 1600X1200 ) wants to see more of the game, and less of the menus / GUI. I personally have gone to shortcuts / binded keys as much as possible with my menus minimized as often as possible. Not only does this let me see more of the word the Dev\'s have designed, but my FPS seems to be higher when I do this.

I play 1024x768 fullscreen. If the windows are opaques it\'s horrible, but once I click in the main game screen the windows are extremely unobtrusive. I usually have the Shortcuts, Info, Chat, and the menu at the top open.

I like you siggy Vardamereth - I\'ve read those books far too many times ;)

With the windows going transparant things aren\'t too bad until I need to clikc on something thats under a windows then I get teh window instead... Toobar is huge.  I\'m working on a nice small set made of rectangular buttons, but its a work in progress.  It would also be nice to have a hide function on some of the stuff - something fun like for instance, my shortcuts window usually sits on the left edge of the screen. Instead of going transparant what if it rolled left to the edge of the screen so only the edge showed - moving the mouse to the extreme edge would cause it to roll back right out so I could click something.  Alot of cool rolly windows could be like that - things like shortcuts, buddy list etc..

GUI is fine. [except the shortcut thingy, but that is what hotkeys are for].
I only keep the character info and chat menu open. I like minimizing the others which I needed until I memorised my hotkeys.
I have no intention of having my character sheet, inventory and buddy list open when I am in the middle of a rat purge :P
