Title: Lending a helping hand
Post by: Kuiper7986 on November 11, 2005, 06:55:27 am
Hey people, can\'t afford to buy Microsoft Office?

Try heading over to this site for a free open source Office Suite...

http://www.openoffice.org

It\'s perfectly legit, and very professional.

The suite comes with:

Presentation Program (Powerpoint equivalent)
Mathematical Function Creator
Vector Drawing Tool (Photo Editing Equivalent)
Spreadsheet (Excel Equivalent)
Database (Access Equivalent)
Word Processor (Word Equivalent)

I personally love OpenOffice.  I have a mac and use the mac version: NeoOffice/J (for Java).

Though it\'s slow some times, it works very very well.

Be carfeful using those brand because so many places use Microsoft Word that you may not be able to transfer your Word Processor document to a Microsoft Word type computer...But if you have no need to transfer files to other computers its not a big deal...

What? You make very little seance in that remark...

Openoffice has Very good MS Office support, infact it is able to recover document the MS Office will choke on, so it could be said that it has better support for the MS formats than the MS products.

I used OpenOffice for quite a while before I could get my hands on MSOffice again, and besides it being (ungodly) slow on a rather fast system, I was rather satisfied. And indeed, the support for MS products was nearly flawless.

Thumbs up for open source projects ;)

I have only two issues with OOo,
1. speed, we all noticed this one
2. bullets.  OOo can\'t seem to handle MS bullets in lists correctly.  Don\'t know why.

buddha: you don\'t use Pages? Pages has turned out very nicely. I used to use open office, but the speed issue really got me. So now I use Pages which gets a big  from me. :)

I\'m using OO for almost everything. I have had some minor issues with very special formatted M$ documents (a year ago, so that may already be fixed), but for everything \"normal\" it certainly works. Also, I don\'t really have a speed issue with it. Sure, it\'s a bit slower starting up than M$O, but not a big deal.
