Title: When NPC server is down
Post by: IIIzeusIII on November 17, 2005, 11:16:22 am
It would be nice, if mining brings some more money. So that it is possible to get some more trias than 6 per ore, when npc server is down.

Or some other job skills implemented to survive the npc-less period.

The development team would prefer to fix existing problems, such as NPCServer crashing, than actually code enhancements to the game based on these errors. What you\'re suggesting is, quite frankly, ridiculous. :)

But it for the future it makes sense. When present bugs have been fixed, there should be worked on some more alternatives to gain money. Not only to make it possible to the players to buy stuff even if the npc server/client/whatever  would be down again.
But also for people like me, who don\'t like fighting monsters or other people and who just want to earn their money the non-bloody way.

This is why crafting is going to be implemented soon :)

Well frankly I don\'t think it is, after 5 years of perfecting fighting and now trying to crush it.
Because more than 75% of players only log on to find out if you can fight yet, and 80% of in game conversations start with is NPC working or can we fight, rapidly followed by when, then quit. In case you haven\'t noticed in game numbers when you can fight during UK daytime is around 50 USA daytime 100, and no fighting, UK 17-25, USA 40-50.

This is because it is at moment a fighting game, as is clearly shown by lack of other things to do.

Sorry but heard it before; soon, to me and most players that have stuck around, this could mean soon, but normally means sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooon, so I won\'t hold my breath. :))

This is not a beef or complaint just think it was about time someone said it, I personally love the game and am willing to stick around and watch it grow, and as best I can participate in game.
  :))

Good thing, too, because that is precisely what I meant ;)

Planeshift has had fighting for a year. It has had roleplay for over 5 years, all the way back to the orginal mud.

Yes, crafting has taken a while. That is because it is a complex system and we want to make sure it works well before players can use it. At this rate many forms of crafting will be released at once, but the code has to be finished first.

The game is what you make it to be for yourself.  If you spend all your time in the arena, and you only stand by Harniquist to give fire broadswords to new people, then of course you\'re only seeing one dimension of what the game has to offer.

I think fighting is great and should stay in the game.

Only so you can continue your mass dueling

Is fighting being crushed? Has anything official been announced to that effect or is this just pure speculation?

Combat has a part to play in a game such as Planeshift, and if there is any truth in what you say, it would be a sad day indeed.

However I believe that it, (combat), really only need play an minor part in comparison to other aspects of the game, and hence become more \'realistic\' within the overall scope of the game.

It fairly plain to see when browsing through the skills list that bigger things are in store for Planeshift than a \'hack and slash game\'.

While it is undisputable that some players, (test players if you like), focus their game sessions around combat, there are many also who look to other activities in the game, mining, exploration and, (dare I say it), roleplay.

I for one am such a character.

Admitedly I take advantage of combat, in order to develop my character in particular ways,  (it is the most effective way of accumulating PP at present).

For example I have recently tried to gain access to the Laanx dungeon via the well. To do so I have spent many playing hours mining gold, training, learning magic, and eventually made it down there. And of course mined some diamonds in the process.

But what next I ask. I for one do not look forward to spending hours of playing time in the arena or mining and will welcome any developments that provide greater opportunities to explore / roleplay and quest.

Quite frankly if there is a concerted effort to shift the focus away from fighting then I whole heartedly welcome it, but to \"crush\" it, would not be wise.

To answer Glendyl Aers Question \"Is fighting being crushed\"?
No not crushed completely, there is always a need for fighting.

In my opinion only, my reason for coming to this conclusion is as followed.

 1. New much needed rules, to kerb random duels.
 2. The new very over priced charge for training in any weapon skill, both in tria and PP, It goes up so fast and at the end of sword max level, you are looking at nearly 300 clicks of the mouse button just to go up 1 level, before 12 was re-lest it was the same as normal Stats like Strength in progression.
 3. Monsters are a little smarter and can attack you from a ridicules range, were as you have to get in close, whether you have a long-sword or dagger.
 4. Last but not lest the supper weapon, designed to kill swift and fast, one or two hits and its over, all the fun of fighting gone, I now on the odd accession I need to fight use my fists, as I no it will at lest last longer, and if i am fighting another play they have a chance to yield.
Title: Not so much question as a point of view.

It would seem that you missed my point.

I am in fact not questioning whether fighting is being crushed, but merely putting forward a series of rhetorical points in response to your earlier post, in which you stated.

I do not in anway believe that fighting \'is being crushed\', not for one bit.

Simply put, If you are going to make such statements, then the onus is on you to make it clear whether it is speculation or not.

Such statements are unhelpful and generate misinformation.

Further to that, if your character has developed to such a powerful state, (as have many others), due to past balancing issues, then all I can say is bring on the wipe, level the playing field and introduce some sanity back into the game.

Yes.  The only reason I think fighting is good is because I enjoy something called \"mass dueling\".  Really, there\'s no other reason for it.  No one has provided any explanation for why fighting and danger might actually help role-playing in the game, and there certainly hasn\'t been any interest in it shown by the devs.  Yup, you sure got me there Suno!

Zanzibar, you think that killing off people in the plaza will -support- roleplay? No, you have that wrong, you get newbies caught in the death realm, and when they find you again they will cuss you out in an OOC manner, and maybe quit because of the disrespect they got. I don\'t care if you call it honorable, its not, its just mass dueling. Honorable is to verbally challenge someone [not everyone you see] in an RP manner, not a \"duel me fool\" or something, kind of way, and fight without running up and killing them in less then a second.
