Ok, since I\'ve been looking into new types of music lately, I thought I could start this thread. Basically I already heard good recommendations for rock bands in this community, so maybe taking it a bit further might be a good idea.
Post any rock bands you like or think are good or whatever. I\'d be grateful for pointing out some good songs from them either.
Now bands (and songs) that are really of my liking are
Regicide - Behind His Eyes
And
Armchair Cynics - Bang
Thanks to Pogo and Kary for those, by the way :)
But anything will do as long as it\'s good. First, because I might like it no matter what genre it is. Second, because some other people might be searching for new music here.
So just post whatever you think deserves recommendation.
- thanks :)
-
Well alot of bands I like are somewhat mainstream but one of my favorites that not too many people know about or have hear is Days of the New and Tantric. The bands themselves are linked basically.. after Days of teh News first album the band split the lead singer still has Days of the New while the old members formed tantric... Some good songs to download:
Days of the New:
Shelf in the Room
Touch, peel and stand
Face of the Earth
Solitude
Tantric:
Astounded
Breakdown
and maybe Hey Now
If you think they totally suck, no need to beat me down :P.. hope you enjoy Drak
-
if you\'re more in the heavy/dark/melancholic rock, three bands are popping in my mind:
- System of a Down
- Kidney Thieves
- Deftones
/me loves them all
-
They are yet to be on a hit list but have great music
http://www.sonofagun-band.com/soag.htm
Dylia headbangs happily
\"keeheehee\" ;)
-
Valbrandr: I will decide whether there\'s a need to beat you down :P
Just joking, I\'ll check those once I get back from uni, thanks :)
miLosh: I don\'t know what I\'m into just yet. I mostly listen to all kinds of melodic (viking, folk, heavy, power, doom, gothic...) metal, just look for new stuff ;)
-
off the top of my head.....
slint
husker du
jawbreaker
sonic youth
dinosaur junior
alice in chains
sound garden
pearl jam
kitchens and bathrooms
don caballero
moneen
wheels on the bus
the smashing pumpkins
helmet
melvins
hella
pavement
radiohead
the smiths
-
i wounldnt really call it rock (rock as in rock rock but it is rock)... but you already know what i listen to.
-
\'Muse\' the band has some rocking songs...try \"Butterfly\'s and hurricanes\" :))
-
if you are listening to Muse then you need to listen to songs like bliss and new born and plug in baby
-
I\'m going to have to put in a second vote for Tantric and Kidney Thieves, although it\'s more industrial than rock. Will rummage around my collection for some songs - I\'ve seriously forgotten what I do and do not have.
-
If you really want a laugh, check out \"Me First and the Gimme Gimmes\". They\'re a punk cover band. They don\'t cover standard punk songs; they take non-punk songs and punkify them. For example, their album \"...Are a Drag\" is all Broadway show tunes. (And it contains the only version I\'ve ever been able to stand of the song \"Tomorrow\" from Annie.)
-
what godfrey said, and reel big fish
-
Rock?
Try \"Thunderstruck\" by AC/DC or other stuff by then, the rolling stones aren\'t a bad choice either, ...
-
Valbrandr: I got Days of the New \"Touch, peel and stand\" and Tantric \"Breakdown\". Both sound cool, but especially Tantric :)
Oh and if someone can point me to a band which plays similar music to the chorus in this song (http://www.elektryczne-gitary.art.pl/media/dzieci.zip), then he gets a cookie, or no, two cookies from me :P

It reminds me of \"Pictures of You\" by the Cure. For no good reason of course.
-
Uhm... so is it similar or just reminded you of it for unknown reason? :P
-
[band] Linkin Park

Some might split hairs and catagorize this as other than Rock, nonetheless:
Band Name:
Tool

Lateralus (2001)
Aenima (1996)
Undertow (1993)
Opiate (1992)

i dont think you will ever get him to listen to linkin park... and the killers arent really a rock band. like track 8 says... its more indie rock music. so if you are going down those lines you have to include people like The Libertines (pete doherty <3), The Futureheads,Arctic Monkeys, Maximo Park, Razorlight...
more bands... AFI.
and franz ferdinand ...though thats more music that i wouldnt really call rock, more alternative/quirky/punky/new wavey/rock
-
Drey\'s right :P
The stuff I heard from Linkin Park was, umm... not really of my liking. To put it lightly ;)
I might check the other one though.
Edit:
And yes, I need to check Tool :O
-
Valbrandr: I got Days of the New \"Touch, peel and stand\" and Tantric \"Breakdown\". Both sound cool, but especially Tantric :)
:D... then I would also check out astounded by Tantric.. its my favorite song by them :).

When you said Chorus do you mean the badass Guitar part? If you did, ever listen to any Jimi Hendrix ? if you already know him then nevermind.. but if not:
All along the watchtower
Hey Joe
Star spangled banner
Now the Star spangled banner is not awesome (not to me) it was done live at woodstock I do believe :). Oh and Voodoo Child :P
-
drak... i can be the sender of the killers if you want... though i will have to include some franz ferdinand

You listen to obscur viking metal, but you aren\'t familiar with tool? Surprising.

black sabbath
neil young
steely dan
pink floyd
led zeppelin
the beatles
crosby steels and nash
jefferson airplane
velvet underground
fleetwood mack
styx
bob dylan
albert king
jimmy hendrix
mountain
queen
This stuff is all pretty typical and easy to access....

I mean the repeated singing part, you know, with the \"hej hej la la la la hej hej hej hej\" bit :)
But the guitar solo is pretty good too, I\'ll check it out.
Zanzibar: Well I can\'t possibly know all existing bands :p
And yeah, I\'ll probably have to check quite a few of those bands from the list...
-

Hehe I know... I was just hoping you meant the guitar playing instead :P.. as for the chorus nope I dont know much like that...
-
I am not sure of what taste in music Draklar has. That is why I posted Linkin park, it is a shame you don\'t like em Draklar! ;) Though I understand if it is not your forte...
:O Drey I was not aware that the killers were not a rock band....but then again who knows these days. There are so many catagories.......
-
/me pokes zorbeals with the work \'alternative\' ... use it well
seeing as the topic here is music,
/me is listening to The Libertines - Don\'t Be Shy - but has a duran duran cd in the cd player which is about to be listened too.
-
I think by \'not a rock band\' Drey means not belonging to the main rock sub-genre. Although the two songs I mentioned in starting post are, respectively, Hard Rock and Alternative Rock.
Generally about my tastes, I mostly like music that is loud and powerful, but mind you, that doesn\'t have vocalist, which seems to have some anger management problems :P
Said that, The Killers isn\'t half bad. Maybe doesn\'t give me that kick, but still listenable ;)
-
Here\'s my current favorite rock bands with songs:
Vaux - Set it to Blow
Audio Karate - Gypsyqueen
Cave In - The World is In Your Way
Hot Water Music - Poison
Voice In The Wire - Ash Black
The Blackout Pact - We Drink So You Don\'t Have To
A good way I found to find good music is to search for a review of an album you like, and generally they\'ll compare it to other bands.
-
Racer X!
http://www.racerxband.com/music.htm
you MUST check out \"Scarified\" from the albym \"Second Heat\" ...if you are into guitar at all ...ouch (that song had me stuck in my bedroom for WEEKS when I was younger ...playing until my hands cramped and my fingers were so bad I had to superglue my callouses back on (not kidding ...ow and eww)

Dylia downloads and keeps
One of my other favorite bands is Three Days Grace
Dylia dances around the plaza :D

It\'s only because me and Karyuu have amazingly similar music tastes... with few exceptions :P
While I\'m at it,
Turmion K?til?t - Teurastaja
too :P

For some more Finnish rock/metal (which you seem to like), you can try these bands/songs:
CMX - Minne paha haudattiin
Peer G?nt - Backseat
Maj Karma - Sodankyl?
Kotiteollisuus - Helvetist? It?

Of course, Moonsorrow, Turisas, Ensiferum, Cadacross, Korpiklaani, Wintersun, Nightwish, Children of Bodom, Turmion K?til?t, Trio Niskalaukaus, Vigrid, Gjallarhorn... The best music country in the world ;)
Got CMX covered too. I\'ll check the others. Or hopefully Karyuu will have those as well :P

I listen to a variety of stuff, I kinda think that most of it would not be to your liking, Draklar, but maybe you should check some out...
From Autum to Ashes, Thursday, NIN, AFI (\\o/ God Called in Sick Today, Drey) Jimmy Eat World, Deftones, Tool, Rage Against the Machine, Veruca Salt, Social Distortion, The Gin Blossoms.
And er, probably a bunch of other stuff that I just can\'t think of right now.
-
Oh yes, for the friends of Finnish metal I forgot to recommend:
Tacere (http://tacere.net/)
Underground stuff, but extremely good.
-
I\'ve moved off of just rock a of late and listen to anything with a good beat, but If I were to giving suggestions, they\'ve most likely been said... buuuut I\'m say them anyway
I\'d start up with a bit of Disturbed can\'t go wrong with that, maybe a bit of Drowning pool, getting a bit featherweight there so to drop it down with some cannibal corpse and berzerker, bring in the oldies with some Fleetwood mac, soft but hey, its good, and for a lil twist some of the Prodigy\'s work can be good on this.
to each their own though

nu metal (http://boards.muchmusic.com/images/graemlins/hungover.gif)

Hum... some good rock you ask? ...
I am surprised that \'Eels\' has not been named. It is my duty to show all of you this old rock band.
It is basically soft nice rock, here are some of the song I prefer :
-Eels-
Novocaine for the soul
Flyswatter
P.S. you rock my world
The name of that last one is quite funny isnt it! ;D
Now I can give you the name of a belgium band, it is not rock, but it is really cool dub. I usually dont like dub, but these guys are great. Their name is :
-EZ3kiel- and try :
Kika
3 rue Montplaisir
Requiem (their own version of the theme from Requiem for a dream ... a really good movie if you ask me)
Okay, now that I am posting, you should all listen to some french music ! But rock bands in france usually suc**... So let me give you original french music :
-La Rue K?tanou-
Les cigales
-Les Ogres de Barback-
Au caf? du canal
-M-
Je dis aime
Le complexe du corn flakes
This last one, M , is probably the only good rock singer here in France...
Have fun with these musics , and be prepared, french music is a bit...frenchie... *Evil laugh*
*Edit :*
I just learned that Ezekiel is actually french ... Wooohooo ! ^^
-
oh i think: you will like that draklar :
sigur ros
ever heard of that icelanding band? its classed as rock but its not very rocky - though it has some e-guitar. its not the same as falkenbach but goes somehow in the same direction, just more trippy.
/me loves sigur ros, the most beautiful sound /me ever heard
(soad is still the most amazing and rocking band, but it can not be said that its beautiful as in beauty ;))
-
Lindrae... nice formatting :P
i dont know if its really rock, but i will send him some No Doubt because its cool. they have a good list of albums... Tragic kingdom, return of saturn, rock steady...
-

Sigur ros isn\'t rock... I see them classified as post-rock, but reviewers are freaking idiots so who cares.
Good band, but they don\'t have much energy going for them. If you like Bjork then definately check them out. Heck, check them out anyway...
-
70\'s influenced ProgRock, Rock/pop song. (don\'t make this face... you will move it ;) )
\"Electric Light Orchestra - on fire high\"
\"A certain Radio - Do the du\"
\"Babe Ruth - The Mexican\"
\"Rush - Overture\" (listen after the 3/4 of the song)
\"Sapo - Been had\"
Extra for fun: \"Dire stairs - sultan of swing\"
-
If you want to hear something that\'s a bit more gothic industrial / electronica / nine inch nails, you might like this guy:
http://www.purevolume.com/ictus
I\'ve talked to him and he\'s pretty cool. My favourite song by him isn\'t on his purevolume page though, but Within is pretty good as long as you aren\'t into instant gratification.
edit: my favourite song is \"Slit\", it\'s hosted somewhere on his website but I don\'t have a link on hand

what is sigur r?s?
a rock band from iceland. the members of the band are:
but i agree with you, they do not fall into my definition of rock as well ;)

um no, i dont agree. the only common thing between sigur ros and bj?rk is that both are from iceland. period. i do not like bj?rk very much, there are 2-3 tracks i can listen to, max. if you want to compare them to other bands, take a look on some early albums from pink floyd. i would be astonished to learn that sigur ros is not influenced by pink floyd ;)
anyway, its definitly not the usual-alternativ-rock-band you\'d expect, hehe
-
I\'m already rather familiar with pink floyd, thankyou.
-
I\'m a Kiss fan. YOU WANT THE BEST, YOU GOT THE BEST, THE HOTTEST BAND IN THE WORLD, KISS!!!!
-
Considering the fact that I am entirely new the the forum, my miserable self can\'t even figure out how to run the game, I will be ignored anyway, and I really am quite bored, I shall put forward an extensive list of the rock bands I listen to.
System of a down. ( My personal favorite )
Rammstein. ( A close second )
Godsmack. ( meh )
And there you have it, ( or you don\'t, depending on your level of attention ) my favorite bands. Mainstream and stereotypical true, but quite unlike the majority of listeners, I listen to them for the music rather than the public statement.
-King of the cooler
-
S y s t e m o f a D o w n
Did anyone get their new cd yet?
I bought it the first day it came out (teusday) and it still hasn\'t left me cd rom drive. :-D
-
*Faldrok takes the thread back in time to 70s/80s*
My bands will be listed in alphabetical order for your convenience. Heh, not really - just because my media library is in that order. :P Anyways, some of these bands have been mentioned, but the more times it has been mentioned, the better it is. ;)
1. AC/DC
2. Aerosmith
3. Alice Cooper
4. Black Sabbath
5. Bon Jovi
6. Def Leppard
7. Dire Straits
8. Eric Clapton
9. Guns N\' Roses (ok...early 90s too)
10. Journey
11. Lynyrd Skynyrd
12. Ozzy (After Black Sabbath...some songs are more metalish, I suppose...)
13. Rolling Stones
14. Scorpions
15. Van Halen
16. Whitesnake
Now, a song or two by each, eh? Hmm. Follow the numbers to see who does them.
1. Thunderstruck, Moneytalks, Highway to Hell, etc.
2. Take Me To The Otherside, Janie\'s Got a Gun, etc.
3. Elected, School\'s Out, etc.
4. Iron Man, Paranoid, The Wizard, etc.
5. Living on a Prayer, Wanted Dead or Alive, etc.
6. Pour Some Sugar On Me, Animal, etc.
7. Money For Nothing, Walk of Life, etc.
8. Layla, Tears in Heaven, etc.
9. November Rain, Sweet Child O\' Mine, Welcome to the Jungle
10. Don\'t Stop Believin\', Anyway You Want It, Lights, etc.
11. Sweet Home Alabama, What\'s Your Name, etc.
12. I Don\'t Know, Crazy Train, Goodbye to Romance, etc.
13. Shattered, Brown Sugar, Sympathy for the Devil, etc.
14. Winds of Change, No One Like You, Rock You Like a Hurricane, etc.
15. Jump, Panama, Jamie\'s Cryin\', etc.
16. Here I Go Again...meh, it\'s a great song, though. :P
And, finally, here are my top picks by number. The number refers to the bands in general. Meaning, you should look for more songs by them than what I posted. If you want, I could give more, but I don\'t want to take all the glory. :P
1, 4, 9, 10, 12. There is my top 5 in no particular order. Now, good day.
EDIT: Some small typos.
-
4 words for you:
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Period. End of discussion ;)
Okay, so I\'m a rabid peppers fan, and thusly, extremely biased. I also love their guitarist John Frusciante\'s solo work, although that\'s a bit more of an acquired taste, esp. his older stuff.
As for which album-- well, that sort of depends on your tastes. They\'ve grown alot as musicians over their 20 yr career. I\'m not familiar with the bands you mentioned, and I live in that big penalty box known as the dial-up zone, so I\'m not about to go on a downloading spree, sadly. :P
There are others I like, but most have been mentioned already. And yes, Hendrix\'s rendition of the Star Spangled Banner was from the original Woodstock.
And for the constant debates over whether or not a certain suggestion is \'Rock\' and should be included in the recommendations, I point to Draklar\'s original post:

www.progarchives.com (http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=105)
YES formed in 1968 with Jon ANDERSON (vocals), Chris SQUIRE (bass, vocals), Peter BANKS (guitar, vocals), Tony KAYE (keyboards), and Bill BRUDFORD (drums). Well-known and influential mainstream progressive from the 1970\'s, and still around in some form ever since, they were highly influential in their heyday, especially notable for the really creative \"Relayer\".
During the 1970s, YES pioneered the use of synthesizers and sound effects in modern music. Driven by Jon\'s artistic vision, they produced such timeless, symphonic-rock masterworks as \"Roundabout\", \"Close To the Edge\", and \"Awaken\". In the 1980s, YES pushed new digital sampling technologies to their limits, selling millions of records and influencing a generation of digital musicians with classics like \"Owner Of A Lonely Heart\" and \"Rhythm Of Love\". Moving through the 1990s and into the new millennium, the band keeps expanding its ...
