Title: Is this how magic is supposed to work?

I have been playing for a while and decided to try out the magic system for a change from the standard sword fighting.  All was good it seemed, until I realized that I still can\'t kill anything without using my sword as backup.

I have 137 Charisma, my skill in the Crystal Way is 17, and I still can\'t kill a rat in less than 3 hits.  Is magic this useless for anyone else?  

I could kill rats in one hit with a non-magical dagger and a skill of much less than 10.

Oh, I am only using 80% spell power because even with my high charisma and high skill level I can\'t successfully cast any higher than 80%.  I only succeed at 80% about once every four tries.

What can I do?  Or am I doomed to forever kill things the old fashioned way with weapons?

P.S. If this is in the wrong section, feel free to move it.  I didn\'t think it belonged in bug reports because it does do damage and my magic arrows are flying correctly (or at least appear to be doing so).

That\'s not how magic is supposed to work. It\'s just that magic and fighting aren\'t balanced yet.

Thanks for the answer.  

That is what I was afraid of... although not being balanced is quite the understatement when you consider how many PP\'s it takes to get to a 17 skill in the Crystal Way.

hmm indeed. Although getting level 17 in sword isn\'t PP free either, but magic is way to weak atm. Only good thing is ofcourse it\'s ranged, but you can\'t take advantage of that to often becuase it takes so long to cast.

Only usefull if you stand on a cliff of some sort so the creature can\'t reach you ;)

As if that would be a fast killing *roll*

So probably don\'t bother training magic now...it\'s weak and it\'ll probably be balanced in the next wipe...where your awesome stats will be gone like air...

*shrugs*

Who knows. Perhaps magic will be tweaked before the next wipe, but indeed if it wasn\'t for the cool effects I wouldn\'t have trained magic at all myself ;)

Well out of my experience spells like \"freeze\" or \"weakness\" work great in combination with melee. First lowering the enemies stats and then bashing on the weakened enemy.

IMHO its seems to me that you guys don\'t understand. These so called spells are the weakest form of them, there will be VERY good spells coming out soon that should take out a player in a couple of hits. And even those spells are not combined...imagine when you combine Fire with Water and Air ect.

Magic is very underestimated atm  :P

AFAIK it does work somehow to some extend: it increases or decreases the chance to successfully cast a spell. However, it does not really have an effect on the power of the spells yet. :(

Fighting and magic are, compared to each other, quite imbalanced, although it\'s already a bit better than before the last wipe, because fighting skills now require more progression points to train them than before the wipe.

Now hold on a second!

Shouldn\'t magic and fight be imbalanced?

My own opinion, but it seems to me that there should have to be some amount of long term studying and learning before someone becomes a great wizard!

Until then, they are at the Mercy of some big lug with a sword...

Who will one day fear them when that person is a great wizzard...

Yes, similar with magic. But now the relation between training magic and weapons is a bit better (although still far from balanced).

Edit:
I think it was ca. 4-5 progression points (+practical exercise) for sword level one and ca. 15 progression points (+practical exercise) for crystal way level one before the wipe. Now the relation is better.
