Title: A question of etiquette..
Post by: Nightflyer0ne on November 28, 2005, 10:48:13 pm
When you ask for advice in the Help channel and get an answer, is it politer to say \"Thank you\", or to leave the channel uncluttered with messages that aren\'t advice requests?

I\'ve been wondering if it is even possible to thank the advisors. I\'ve tried on a couple of occasions, but wasn\'t allowed to because my message didn\'t have the right content. I would like the advisord to know that I appreciate their help.

i think each question submitted is handled by a diferent advisor so sending \"thank you\" through the help will probably just be recieved by the first available advisor and not the one you got the original answer from.

if im wrong about this please let me know and i will say thankyou in future.

addition: ok i spent some time recently as an advisor and although i would say i like being thanked for helping it is rather annoying sometimes since the system assumes the person is asking another question when they say thanks and bugs you for a reply until the session times out.

still i always appreciate it :)

No, all advisors see all the messages.
A thank you is always appreciated though.

Okay, thanks. I just didn\'t know if it would be considered clutter instead of politeness, if you know what i mean :)

A thankyou is always appreciated as long as it doesn\'t turn into a conversation. :) For that, Advisors can choose whether to disclose their names or not and messages can be moved to /tells.

Like everyone said ... \"thank you\" is appreciated by most people but sometimes you might not get a reply. If the thank you message is given after a while it can end up in the help channel as a new conversation and the advisors won\'t be able to reply anymore.

I always say thank you, it\'s nice and I certainly would appreciate if someone says thanks. Today I helped a guy with mining, he was typing /auction dig gold all the time, so I had to say a lot of times that auction isn\'t the same as action. After a few times he got it and went digging, but no thank you!

I even see a little ... maybe annoyance, but very little - or an enforcement:

If the advisee has the last word, then his messenger \"taps his foot impatiently\" although the topic has already closed. So the advisor either has to ignore the tapping, or has to answer a last \"You\'re welcome.\" -- and so both parts have to be polite at the end, or not. ;)

it kind of annoys me a bit when someone doesnt say thank you or thanks or some variation mainly because i had a habbit of ending advide sessions with \"/advice \'bleh\' no problem\"
