Right, I open up PlaneShift, get to the login screen, and BAM - \"Fail 100%\" Okay, no biggy, happens all the time, right?
Wrong...
BIG biggy, because, according to my computer, the server has been failed for several hours.
Nothing on the main page, nothing on the forums.
I\'m staring at laanx.fragnetics and there are 41 people online. 41 people playing on a \'failed\' server. Fancy that!
*Smacks her POS computer*
Yes, I\'ve updated. Yes, I updated again. No, none of the files failed the first time. No, there weren\'t any files to be updated the second time.
I\'m in need of the assorted smarts of you assorted people... Help before I CRACK!!! I was without PS for like, two or three weeks, and now I finally get it back, only to have it die in (i think) three days!
HELP!
-
Can you check your data/servers.xml file and tell me what the entries are in there for the server?
-
*Blinks* I sure as smurf can try...
....
I FOUND IT! \\O/
-
I am totally figuring out this blasted technology... *Happy dance*
-
Ok, that seems correct, and as you point out the server is up because there are players on it. Have you actually tried to login despite the \'Fail\' indication?
-
Yes, indeed I have, but it remains vigilant in its response... \"Cannot Connect to server\"
-
Hmm, strange. It sounds like it could be some sort of network issue. Sounds like something is getting blocked somewhere but I am unsure of where. You mentioned that you were able to play before? Maybe try again in a day and if still no luck I can try to help further. Stuff like this is hard to figure out because from my point of view everything is ok.
-
*Blink of awe* You reply FAST...
Okay, I\'ll try again tomorrow. Thanks for helping me, acraig. ^^ \'Tis appreciated.
-
The other option is to check if you are behind a firewall and make sure that the port 7777 is open for connections. This *might* be a problem from discussions on irc so we may change that port back to what it was before.
-
ok so im on a mac and im not sure how to open up my port 7777 or whatever anyone know what to do?
-
Look up the model of your router or your brand of firewall, depending on which you have. They should all come with manuals and guides, and a simple google search should reveal them a-plenty :) The thing is that there are just way too many variations to give you step-by-step instructions for, so your best bet is to go to the manufacturer and read up on how to forward a port.
-
I checked my system preferences (I\'m using Mac 10.4 as well) and turned off the firewall. I still get the \"Failed\" message, and I\'m confused out of my mind. I\'m new to the game, and I\'ve been trying to find a hint through the threads on what I\'m doing wrong. Can someone help me out, please? Thank you.
-
I too am a Mac user with a G4 powerbook and Tiger and having problems with connecting to server. I turned off my firewall and still get the failed message. Strange thing is I tried update and it too says uable to connect to server. I checked the server and there are 60 people on it. I am computer challanged somewhat. Is this problem a mac wide problem? I even downloaded the program several times with the same results each time.
Helllppp!
thanks
-
My suggestion would be to browse through the Mac OSX forum a bit below this one - your issues may have been already addressed. Check the stickies and recent threads, just in case.

Right, so...
Norton AntiVirus off. Still failed.
Tried to reinstall. Still failed.
I\'m running out of ideas here. My computer is crap, I\'ve no idea what\'s up with it.. (Windows XP if you\'re wondering)
I\'ve tried shutting off my computer (That\'s a miracle; For a while it wouldn\'t turn off), nothing doing. Evidently my internet isn\'t responding, but I\'m on the internet right now, so that\'s also crap.
*Headbash* Just kill me.
-
Ok,
afaik Norton AntiVirus is an antivirus only, since Norton has a firewall software called Norton Personal Firewall... I think both of them came bundled with Systemworks?
Despite the fact of considering an Antivirus program change, since I, and with this I\'m repeating myself, seem to recall some claims of Norton taking too much resources.
Although there can be multiple reasons causing that you can\'t connect, the most probable one has been already pointed out, which is a firewall, either software or hardware (router) one.
You could try this things, to provide a little more of information.
Go to start-> Run. Then type in the box \"cmd\" without the quotes.
At the prompt that will appear type tracert laanx.fragnetics.com and post the results here.
If you\'re unsure about having or not a firewall, press ctrl+alt+supr and on the process tab you\'ll find all programs running on the computer, you can try looking if some is a firewall software or again posting here and let another do that for you.
As for the computer not shutting down correctly, perhaps the message \"you can now turn off your computer\" appeared, when normally the computer auto-shuted down?
If that\'s the case right click on my computer->properties select hardware tab, device manager. Click on Show->Show hided devices.
Now I don\'t recall its name, but you\'d see one item with a red cross if the system wasn\'t turning off automatically, simply select that item, go to properties and then enable it.
-
I said that for a while the computer wouldn\'t shut off. Now for some amazing reason it is.
My parents would have something to say if I changed our antivirus. Norton has given us no trouble thus far.
My friend tried the tracert laanx.fragnetics.com thing. I can\'t remember what it said, I suppose I\'ll do it again.
*Does so*
*Blinks*
Oooh... Well, now it\'s coming up with \'names\', as Dancer called them... It wouldn\'t last time... Oooh... *Watches*.
Do I really have to type all this...?

Sure it does help:
The first thing that can be seen is that you\'re on a shared connection to internet, towards a router.
Theoretically that router shouldn\'t give you any problem as the outbound ports are already maped by default so, even letting it by default the game should work.
The results show that you\'re able to reach laanx server without troubles, and that none of the test packets was lost.
That\'s really weird since, when you\'re able to do this, you should be able to launch the game and, next to laanx there shouldn\'t be the \"fail\" word.
And two sidenotes:
a) You could have posted an screen capture instead of copying all text, and
b) Although Norton isn\'t showing you any problems, it can be perfectly eating more resources than the ones really needed for an antivirus to run, and thus resting potential to your computer.
And one final wonder:
I assume that friend of yours didn\'t test the tracert command from his/her house, having a completely different internet connection than the one you have...
I mean I assume that friend was making the test on the computer you usually use to play the game.
That said, if the tracert is correct, and it is now, you shouldn\'t have problems connecting with laanx.
-
*Shakes head bewilderedly* I\'m going to go try again then... Wish me luck... And if it doesn\'t work... :( Jjairr will need a huggle or ten.
EDIT:
*Scratches chin thoughtfully*
Okay... Progress... Now the server is \"... not running or not reachable\". :S I suppose that\'s an improvement? *Goes to check the server condition*
EDIT 2:
laanx.fragnetics.com is under the impression that there are 54 people online.
*headbash, goes to stab things with her spifftacular new letter opener from Noble Collections that looks like Sting from Lord of the Rings*

For all who arel like I who are computer chanllenged. I was playing around and found out how to connect to the server when previously it kept saying failed 100%.
For plane shift to run properly you need to download the most recent Java program from the Mac OS X download site.
After that, Go to home page of this current web site.
Go to Support subdivision
Go to Mac OSX Specific Issues
In blue highlighted area click on ?Important read before posting a guide to running plane shift on Mac OS X. Then click on OS 10.4.x: Updater.jar (29 K) and after the download make sure you place it in the folder you created for the plane shift program and then run
-
Heh, did all that.
The only problem now is that it won\'t let me make a character. Mann. It gets stuck on the race screen and won\'t let you hit next/path.
-
You should post your charictor problem in the correct post, so there is better record of the problem

Are you telling me that just after checking with the traceroute that the server responds, I mean just inmediately after you receive its response, you launch the game and try to connect, and the server shows Fail 100% thus not allowing you to connect?
I\'d say that\'s absolutely impossible unless there\'s something wrong in the coding, which I have to discard since lots of people are able to connect to it.
-
I tell you, this POS computer is messed up!
*Headbash*
Yeah, Nilrem. That\'s what I\'m telling you.
EDIT: Did the tracert thing again, looked fine, got to the screen, \"fail 100%\", tried to log on anyway, nothing.
Even the greatest technological minds can be foiled by the wrath of teh POS...
*Salutes* Thanks to everyone who\'s tried so far, thanks for everyone who will continue to try. I\'m going to bed, maybe I\'ll wake up and find someone has broken in and stolen my computer... *Hopes*
-
I honestly don\'t know what is the thing to do for your problems to get solved.
I\'d start looking at the routing table your computer has (the tracert I think sends IGMP type of packets, while the \"fail\" message on the server is made with UDP packets, and perhaps you\'ve got something blocking UDP packets but not IGMP) as well as the router that you have on 192.168.1.1 to see if it\'s properly configured (theoretically it won\'t need any configuration, since all outgoing ports are already mapped by default and they should be allowed to go on) I also don\'t know if enabling UPnP on your router could have any effect; but sounds to me like if you (theoretically should let the packets leave your network) but when being received back, perhaps the router is misconfigured and sends those packets to the other pc on your network, so you don\'t receive them. There are some monitoring programs avaiable for free that should help to track the possible cause of the incidence (such as ethereal) but I think that could be too much complicated.
I poked Acraig to see if he has any idea of what could be going on; but you were able to play before, so, if nothing has been changed since your last time playing this is really weird... because it seems that either someone touched the router configuration or installed a software firewall, but definitively you aren\'t receiving the UDP packets.
-
It *could* be the port that we are currently using on the server. We will change that port on the next update and hopefully that will fix some of these issues. I know for a fact that somebody on IRC was having issues with one port but not another ( ie they could connect to a server that was running on a different port but not the current one ).
-
Well I think Jjairr was able to connect to the game, even when the port was changed, but it can be worth a try.
Jjairr you can look if on the configuration of the router if you\'re redirecting traffic that comes from 7777 to another computer, or if you\'ve a software firewall on your pc, try even turning it off completely to see if you can connect.
-
it\'s 11:18 pm and that went right over my head, but i feel i should respond anyway...
1.) Err, all that shiznit about a router and configuration and shtuff... Smaller words, shorter sentences, and precise instructions would be nice. ^^
2.) Norton AntiVirus was disable for a while at a suggestion similar to the one you guys are making... CHAOS! Whenever we turned on the computer we would get a message saying that some such thing on Norton hadn\'t loaded and that our computer was not protected, and to try restarting. Even if we restarted, it would pop up still. Dad was freaking out, and mother was pissed off, if you\'ll pardon the term. She said that until we figured out the problem, I would get NO INTERNET WHATSOEVER. She said it loudly, strongly, and with these evil glaring you\'re-gonna-die eyes. Thanks to help from my buddy, though, I managed to get Norton working again.
DO NOT EVER SUGGEST DISABLING ANY FORM OF FIREWALL TO ME AGAIN, ON PAIN OF DEATH.
On pain of MY death!
That is to say, if I disable the firewall again, I will die. No questions asked.
3.) There was a three, I swear... Oh, yeah. Being so helpless to the crap called technology makes me feel insanely stupid. I dislike said feeling immensely... >.< But please, continue with teh help. I appreciate it, I really do.
- So basically... Errr, check the router port openness configuration thingy mcthing... Right... Don\'t know how to do that... Help? *Large pleading innocent eyes*

Tell us what kind of internet connection you have. Does your computer go through a router (ethernet cable from your computer to device and another cable from that to modem). If you have a router, look on the bottom of it and tell us what kind it is.
I tried to find some tools to detect if the port was open but I couldn\'t even see my port as open when running the game. It associated the psclient.exe with port 2530.
Do you have any problems with other online games?

Well, I think it was me the one who suggested to turn of the firewall, and yeah, I think it was me too the one that stated that Norton Antivirus _isn\'t_ a firewall, but an antivirus (yeah, that\'s why they called it Norton Antivirus instead of Norton Personal Firewall ;) ) so, in other words, I never suggested you to turn off your antivirus (although I admit I suggested a change of antivirus software) but a momentary shutdown of the firewall to see if you were able to play.
That said, I\'m happy you can now connect, and it seems that nothing was touched? which indeed would be a bit weird, but hey, you\'re ingame so see you there!
@Kirk:
Yeah, I think that the port the game uses changes at every execution of the game, but the important thing is that laanx (the game server) accepts connections on port 7777 (I think, someone correct me if I\'m wrong)
-
Nilrem,
I\'m certainly no expert in regards to network communications. I know the file is telling the game to use port 7777. I just scanned various ports on the server and found several open (21,22,25,53,110) but 7777 wasn\'t one of them. The only thing I can think of is that maybe my scanner doesn\'t do UDP.
edit: The local is UDP (does change) so that is probably why I can\'t detect 7777.
-
All ports below 1024 are specified to be used by certain services, they\'re called well known ports; that\'s why you see some of them in use.
Anyway, as I said, the one that listens on 7777 is the server, that is, laanx. I\'d say that\'s the connection port to the server; I think they call it connection socket, if I\'m not mistaken once connection is established, you\'re assigned an aleatory port number (UDP) and that\'s why you see it changing everytime you launch the game, from which the communication between client and server is done.
Of course I could be wrong with that interpretation.
-
See, well, it\'s weird, \'cause when Norton got back up, I was all tired and I just thought, y\'know, \"What the hell, I\'ll try PlaneShift. Ten bucks on it not working.\" So I opened it, and Norton popped up with a message... \"PS is trying to connect to a DNS server\" and I selected \"always allow connections from this program on all ports\" and hit okay, and then I got to the green log-in screen, and wham! I could play... \'Twas odd. But... I guess Norton WAS blocking PS. So, whatever.
*Gives everyone who helped her a cookie* Did I tell you all how much I love you?
*Squee, finishes typing christmas list, runs off to play PS*
